(My thanks to Kausn_husky for agreeing to help me with this story, all of the characters in this story are mine, however, Sergeant Lucas Doyle has been given over to Kausn, as hopefully he will be able to add something to the story)

_ _

It is Saturday, the morning after Trish's funeral, I lie in bed next to Lucas who is still quietly snoozing, I look lovingly at him and my heart aches because my broken body is stopping me from fully making Lucas the happiest guy alive.

I decide that today is the day where I begin to do more stuff for myself, I will get back on my own two feet or I will die trying, as always Lucas has left my wheelchair by my side of the bed and so I lean out of bed and pull my wheels a little closer to ease the transfer of my body over to the chair, oh yes I know that I should keep to using my crutches now that I have learned how to use them, but if truth be known, it really took a lot of my strength and will power yesterday to stay upright on them and by the gods am I feeling it today.

I manage to lower myself into the chair without waking Lucas from his slumber and then I wheel myself out to the bathroom to carry out my morning routine, once my ablutions are complete I make my way down the stairs using the stair lift, once at the bottom I transfer myself to my downstairs chair, I spot a small and unused side table and I am suddenly hit with an idea, I will make Lucas breakfast in bed.

I slowly move the table and position it where my chair usually sits waiting for me and then I head into the kitchen, my first task is to take the myriad of pills that I now have to take after being shot, with that unpleasant task done I find a wooden tray and begin to fill it with what I would normally call a Saturday morning breakfast, so a glass of OJ for Lucas and a glass of milk for myself, a plate full of buttered toast to share, and a bowl each of our favourite cereal.

With the tray now full I gently lower it down and rest it across the arms of my chair and then I slowly make my way back to my stair lift, I park my chair in front of the side table as close as I dare and slowly transfer the tray to the side table, I then get myself comfortable on the stair lift and then I transfer the tray to my lap. The stair lift makes its way back up the stairs and it is then that I spot a flaw in my plan, I have nothing to stand the tray on when I get back upstairs....damn it!

I am nearing the top of the stairs when a sudden flash of inspiration hits me, I will use the arms of the wheel chair to rest the breakfast tray on and then I will then use the handles of the chair for support much like I use the crutches and then I will push the chair into the bedroom, I just hope to the gods that Lucas is not awake.

My plan worked right up until I was standing next to Lucas's side of the bed, it was then that I realised that I was in for an all out ass chewing.

"Todd, what the fuck are you doing? The chair is for you to use not a breakfast tray, what if you had fallen and injured yourself I mean come on man use some of the brains that god gave you."

My bottom lip begins to tremble and Lucas is quick to realise what is going on.

"Oh crap Todd I'm so sorry, you make us breakfast in bed the day after we bury your friend and partner and all I can do is bitch about you wanting to be a little more independent."

Lucas quickly takes the tray from the chair and gently lowers it to rest on the bed, he then gets out of bed and hugs me tight and whispers into my left ear.

"Thank you babe, no one has ever brought me breakfast in bed."

Lucas then helps me back into bed and then he climbs in his side and we begin to enjoy our slightly cold toast and soggy cereals. Once breakfast is finished I let out a slight chuckle.

"Sorry that it was cold and soggy sweetheart."

Lucas shakes his head and laughs.

"Todd, we are cops, we're used to cold and soggy, what made it great though is you."

I'm pretty sure that you could have fried eggs on the blush that was likely coming through my orange fur, we both then laughed at the double entendre that he had inadvertently used, in all honesty it felt good to laugh again.

Once the laughter had died down again Lucas picked up the breakfast tray and started heading for the door until I stopped him with a protest.

"Babe, aren't you forgetting something?"

Lucas looked at me with confusion written all over his face.

"What?"

I let out a small sigh.

"I'm not dressed yet hon."

That was all he needed, the confused look turned to a look of evil fun.

"Well I guessed that since you managed to make us breakfast in bed that you could maybe get yourself dressed too."

Damn him and his sexy ass, by doing a good deed I had unwittingly fallen into a trap that Lucas was only too willing to spring, deep down inside though I knew that he had a point, it is time for me to start being the Fox that I once was, no more feeling helpless and sorry for myself, if I am to return to the job that I love so much then I need to start now.

My clothing is what I had used once we had arrived home from the funeral, so a simple light green polo shirt which was easily pulled over my head and smoothed down as much as possible, a clean pair of boxers, which were a little difficult to put on but after a ten minute fight they conformed to me and all was well, a clean pair of socks, yes I know that getting fully dressed might seem like a waste of time but if we were called upon to go out at any point during the day I was not going out half naked, and finally a simple pair of blue knee length shorts, I also added my training shoes too as if we did have to go out it would have taken me ages to put them on.

Now that I am dressed I make my way to the stair lift and then down to the ground floor, as I arrive I can see that Lucas is talking quite heatedly on his cell phone.

"....but Captain, I was hoping to be here with Todd for the day, let's not forget that he had one hell of a day yesterday."

There was a slight pause as the Captain gave Lucas his reply, once the reply had been given Lucas's head dropped in resignation.

"Okay Captain, I will be there as soon as I can."

With that Lucas flipped his phone shut and ended the call, he then turned and realised that I was watching him and so he let out the sigh that he had been holding in.

"Sorry Todd, I have to go into work today, there is a shit load of paperwork that needs to be caught up on...."

I hold up my paw to silence him.

"Lucas, put my crutches into the car, I will go into work with you, hell if I am going to be a desk jockey for a while I may as well start today."

A slight gasp leaves Lucas's muzzle.

"Are you sure that you want to go back so soon babe?"

I shake my head.

"No Lucas I don't want to go back so soon, I need to go back this soon, there is a difference, we have already proved that I can do more for myself than we originally thought possible and getting back into a routine of work will be good for me, it will stop me from wallowing in self pity."

A small smile graces Lucas's handsome face as he heads towards where my crutches are stored so that he can put them into the car. I know that I am not exactly dressed to go into work but if they want me at a desk then they will have to take me as they find me.

Once the crutches are in the car Lucas helps to transfer me from my wheel chair to the passenger seat of the car, he then loads the chair into the trunk along with my crutches as a backup should it be needed.

We spent the journey into the station working out the logistics of what we were about to do, from actually getting me into my office to sorting out how I was going to answer the call of nature and just navigating my way around the various parts of the station, it was just as we pulled into Lucas's parking spot that everything was finally sorted and it was then that I realised just how much we all take for granted when making our way into work.

"So Todd is it crutches or chair? It is your choice."

I gave Lucas's question some thought and then settled on crutches.

"I will go in on my crutches please Lucas, though at some point I may need you to get my chair."

Lucas nods his head in affirmation and heads to the trunk of the car to collect my crutches. Once he has my crutches he stands at my side of the car and helps me up onto them, he waits until I am fully steady before he stands aside and lets me get clear of the car.

I wait for Lucas to finish locking the car and then we both make our slow journey inside the station. As we enter the station I can see that all of the usual faces are there all milling about doing their daily tasks and there is the usual low hum of general and work related chat in the air.

The door self closes behind us causing the noise to die down and all eyes to look at who had just entered the station. I really didn't need a scene at the moment and so I just stood there for a while and uttered just two words.

"Morning all."

It is then that I can feel another set of eyes boring into the back of my neck and so I slowly turn around making sure that I don't accidentally put my crutches on the persons footpaw, the person that I see standing behind me with a shit eating grin plastered all over his muzzle is none other than Captain Myers.

"Well Marshall, I don't usually gain any satisfaction from being right and it usually pains me to say it but I am going to say it anyway, I told you so, I knew for a fact that you would be back as soon as you were able, now get your Foxy butt into your office and let's see if we can't get a few good hours work out of you."

Before I make my way to my office I stop the Captain to speak to him.

"I apologize for not exactly being in Police Uniform sir but you kind of caught me napping when you called Lucas, I mean Sergeant Doyle into work."

Captain Myers just rolls his eyes.

"Oh please Marshall, like I am going to stand on ceremony like that, you could be here in a fucking boiler suit and I wouldn't care, all that matters is that you are here, now if you need Doyle to do anything for you that will be fine, or if he isn't around then buzz me and I will be happy to help, welcome back Sergeant Todd Marshall."

Lucas and I head to our now shared office and he helps me to get behind the desk, I slowly lower myself down into the seat and look at the desk in front of me, on top of the desk are the files that were there from before the incident, some of them are just reports that need to be filled in, while others are reports that are waiting for my signature.

"Well Lucas, no time like the present, so I guess I get started with my mountain of paperwork."

Lucas just nods and heads over to his desk, the desk that used to be Trish Colman's, I sit at my desk for a moment and watch as Lucas takes his seat, it will be difficult for me to see a new partners face sitting at that desk but it is something that I need to get through as quick as I possibly can.

I have been working hard on my paperwork for close on two hours when a new probationary officer walks into the office carrying another file; he lays it down on my desk and turns to leave.

I open the file and instantly begin to openly cry, it is the file that I really did not need to be brought across my desk, it is the file about the jewellery store robbery, the one that cost me the use of my legs and Trish her life.

Lucas is quick to my side and looks at the file concerned, he then let's out a menacing growl and quickly gathers the file up and dashes out of the office in hot pursuit of the officer who brought it into the office.

I hear him shout at the top of his voice.

"Yo Jansen what the fuck do you think you are doing?"

The officer in question makes his shaky way back to where Lucas is standing which is just outside the office door, so now I can hear every word that is being said.

"W-What is it Sergeant Doyle? What did I do wrong?"

Lucas thrusts the file into the officer's chest.

"Oh nothing Jansen, apart from kicking my fucking partner when he is down, you saw Sergeant Marshall walking into the office on crutches yes?"

The officer shakily nodded his head and Lucas continued his tirade.

"Sergeant Marshall was gunned down in the line of duty, Sergeant Trisha Colman lost her life in that same incident, and now you have just dumped the file regarding the incident on Sergeant Marshall's desk, I never thought that I would ever say this about a fellow officer but you are a piece of shit, now get the fuck out of my sight and take this fucking file with you."

Lucas now returns to my side and gently hugs me from behind while I am still sitting the chair sobbing my heart out, it doesn't take long before Captain Myers is standing before us in the office.

"Doyle what the hell is going on? It sounded like I had world war 3 going on in my own station."

Lucas filled the Captain in on what had happened, the Captain then looked at me and spoke.

"Look Todd, I'm sorry you had to go through that, Jansen is new here but he should have cleared things with me first before bringing you any files because officially at the moment you are on medical leave, but don't worry I will make sure that it doesn't happen again."

He then turns to Lucas.

"Doyle while I appreciate that you were upset that something like this could happen, I would have preferred that you bring it to my attention and not chew a probationary officer out on your own, especially with the language that you were using."

Lucas hangs his head a little.

"I'm sorry Captain, I guess things are still a little raw for us all, I'll go and find Jansen and apologize to him."

The Captain nodded his head and headed back to his own office while Lucas went out in search of Officer Jansen.

I sit there alone and try to collect myself together again; I consider whether I made the right choice to come back to the job or should I have retired on the grounds of ill health? Ultimately though it all comes down to the fact that there will be highs as well as lows but no matter what I still love being a cop.
