Come as You Are - Scene 6
#7 of Come as You Are
Hey there,
Well, the final scene is finally here! If you are confused by the characters changing, it is to distinguish whether they are there as themselves or their fursonas. Hope you enjoy, and let me know in the comments how you liked the whole play. I got an A on it, btw.
Scene 6
At RISE:
(The church dance. There is a large pavilion, and there are people dancing to loud music. The theme of the dance is "Come as you are". The dress of the people there varies from formal to casual. To the left is the parking lot. The music is slightly muted, as the scene starts out in the parking lot. Dave and Aaron are wearing their fur-suits, Aaron as a blue grey wolf and Dave as his black Shepard. Neither have their masks on. Dave looks gleeful, Aaron looks like he is rethinking their plan.)
Aaron
Don't you think this is pushing it a bit far?
Dave
No. The theme is about revealing your inner self, or it was supposed to be. Unfortunately, it seems that no one in this town has an inner self they want to show. I feel perfectly comfortable with who I am though, and I intend to show it.
Aaron
Jeff said it was up to you if you wanted to uphold the image of a perfect family, but I'm not sure if going to the church dance in our fur-suits is exactly what he meant. I would say coming here together would be pushing it as it is.
Dave
Don't argue with me wolfy, we're doing this. I have had it with acting like someone I'm not. Don't you want to show everyone who you really are, and how great we dance?
Aaron
It seems reckless, that's all. I am proud of who and what I am, but that doesn't mean I want to show everyone around me.
Dave
Come on, please? How about this, we won't take off our head masks unless you want to. Ok?
Aaron
I suppose so. Well then, let's go in.
(They put on their heads and walk in to the pavilion. The music becomes louder, and the lights focus on the dance floor. There is a pulse pounding beat, and everyone is dancing. Soon, however, everyone begins to stare at the newcomers. The tall grey wolf, and his partner, the black German Shepard walk in, hand in hand. They turn to face each other and begin dancing to the music. The music continues, but everyone soon stops dancing and turns to face the unusually dressed pair. Eventually, a security guard walks up to the Shepard and taps his shoulder.)
Guard
Excuse me, sir? May I ask what you are doing?
Dave Shepard
I'm dancing with my mate here. Is there a problem?
Guard
That depends. May I ask why you are wearing these costumes?
Dave Shepard
I believe the theme of this dance was self-expression. Is that not the case?
Guard
It is, but do you mean to say that you two ehh...
(He peers into the other mask to try and judge the wolf's gender.)
...gentleman identify as the animals you have dressed as?
Aaron Wolf
That is indeed how we identify. Do the church organizers have an issue with that?
Guard
(Uncertainly)
Yes, I suppose they do.
Dave Shepard
How about you, do you disapprove of us? Be honest.
Guard
No, I suppose not. I have always felt some curiosity about your type, and I have to say, I support what you are doing here. But don't tell anyone.
Aaron Wolf
Why? We are proud of who we are. Go tell whoever wants us to leave to talk to us themselves. And if you ever want to chat sometime, let us know. We're open about who we are.
Guard
Ok, thanks that would be nice sometime.
(He walks off. The wolf and the dog begin to dance again.)
Dave Shepard
Wow, since when are you that proud of who we are?
Aaron Wolf
Since I started dancing with my stud of a mate, and had a random person say he was curious about us. Oh look, here comes someone else to yell at us.
Dave Shepard
Oh god, her. She always acted like I was some kind of saint, not because of my personality, but so she could suck up to my family. Prepare for a wave of bs.
(She walks over, and pokes the wolf hard in the back.)
Aaron Wolf
Ow, that hurt. Was that necessary?
Mrs. Greenbaum
Yes, I believe it was. I don't know who you hooligans are, but you are ruining this social event. This event was partially organized by our new church leader, Dave, and if he sees you two freaks here, I will hold you both responsible for ruining this dance.
Aaron Wolf
Isn't the point of this dance to express and reveal your inner selves?
Mrs. Greenbaum
The point of this dance is to show Dave the fruits of his labors, and further his relationship with my daughter, Elaina.
(The German Shepard begins to slowly grind on the wolf's rear. He wraps is arms around the wolf, and puts his head on the wolf's shoulder. Mrs. Greenbaum looks appalled. The rest of the people have started dancing again, and the two furs' dancing is far from the most suggestive. The wolf moans slightly, just loud enough for Mrs. Greenbaum to hear.)
Aaron Wolf
(Aside to the Shepard)
Don't you think we are taking this a little far? We don't want to give people a reason to say that we are sex freaks.
Dave Shepard
I'll tone it down a bit. Sorry. How would you like to give her the shock of her life?
Aaron Wolf
Sure, what do you have in mind?
Dave Shepard
Something you said would make you uncomfortable.
Aaron Wolf
Not anymore, stud. I love you, and I'm truly proud of who I am.
Dave Shepard
Well then, let's get this going.
(They turn to face each other. Mrs. Greenbaum moves to confront the Shepard.)
Mrs. Greenbaum
Get out of here, now!
Dave Shepard
What, are you afraid we might cause a scene?
(She does a double-take, recognizing the voice, but not able to believe the identity of the person.)
You ok there Mrs. Greenbaum?
Mrs. Greenbaum
I don't understand, is this some sort of joke?
Dave Shepard
Nope, this is who I am.
(He points at Aaron)
And this is my mate, Aaron.
Mrs. Greenbaum
What is happening, I don't understand what you are saying.
Dave Shepard
Don't you? Aaron, are you ready?
Aaron Wolf
I suppose so.
(They move apart slightly, then remove their masks. They embrace, and kiss once on the lips. Mrs. Greenbaum shrieks, and everyone turns to look. There is a sudden silence in the room as everyone realizes the identities of the two furs. They both bow, to some scattered applause, mainly from the guard, and then put their arms around their shoulders.)
Dave Shepard
You may be wondering what the meaning of this is, and I think it should be clear. We came as we are, not as society expects us to be. We hope you can come to accept us, and I am proud to be here tonight and have been able to
share this with you. We will leave now, and let you get back to your party. Farewell.
(They put their head masks back on and walked towards the door, holding hands. As the wolf passed the guard, he gave him a brief hug, and Dave gave him a hi-five. Then the Wolf and the Shepard walked out together, with a newfound sense of peace.)
