Chapter 7
A new face and a new plan
I was dreaming quite clearly tonight thoughts of Tye went through my head
The last thing he said to me was
"I'll see you when you wake up Dachii... in our world"
I remember feeling very strange, like all the energy in my body draining and I felt myself hit the virtual ground before everything going black
Tye... did you lie to me? ... or did you just not know?
A chill ran down my spine, that's when I woke up
I opened my eyes and took in a breath; the room had gotten a lot colder even for me
I then felt another chill, how could I be cold? I was still under the blanket
I put my claw and felt where the chill was on my spine and I was surprised at what I had found
It was cold and seemed a little wet, was this ice?
A blast of cold air blew upon my claw and back, I rolled over so I could see what was going on
"Zero?" I said to myself
He was sound asleep; Ace must have let him stay here to
He was different than me; his breathing caused the room to become cold, the chill even made me shiver with my flame
A took my claw and slowly closed Zero's muzzle so he would breathe through his nose instead, that seemed to have worked, he was still asleep and not blowing out breaths of chilling air
A shot a small flare just above the bed to warm the room back up again before I had gotten comfortable and curled up to sleep again
I was glad in a way that I had someone here with me, I had my brother by my side, even if I didn't really know him we seemed to be connected, it was like how I had felt for Tye long ago but a little deeper
What was he like? I wanted to know
He isn't like me... does he have old memories like me? ... does he have someone waiting for him
I had a restful night, my slumber was warm and I felt content, but I had noticed a pattern in my dreams
Every one of them had either Tye or just flashes of memory, why was that? Was I incapable of having an imagination? ... or could it be because of what I had been through lately?
What ever the cause I did want to know the answer... maybe I can ask Zero he hasn't been through much, his mind is fresh maybe it was different, but if he never had a dream before... did that mean there was something wrong with him?
I woke up some time later to find Zero still asleep and Ace sitting at the chair in the room
He was looking right at us, staring if that's what you would call it, but he had a look on his face he was smiling but it was more of a thoughtful smile then an excited one
I sat up on the bed a yawned, and then I looked at Ace, who seemed to have snapped out of his staring state
"Good morning Ace" I said
"Afternoon bud" he chuckled and rubbed my head "Dachii could you wake your brother... we're going to finish up his tests today"
I nodded and used my tail to poke at his chest and shake him, he then jumped up a little before getting up
"Finally awake sleepy head?" Ace said to him "we have to go soon so rub the sleep out of your eyes"
Zero got up and hopped out of the bed, he didn't say a word he just stood by the door and waited
I frowned a little, did he not want to talk to me, or was he just shy?
"Ace... what do you need to test him on?" I asked before Ace got up
"Well, I believe it's the same stuff as you except for ... memory and emotion" he replied
"... Will he ever leave this place?"
"I don't know..." and with that he got up and they both left the room
I had to figure something out... they created him... without any reason... but they still test him to see if his body is normal
What does that make us? Are we just... test subjects?...
No something tells me we are thought of more than that, at least to Ace
But why is that? What's so different about Ace compared to anyone else, why does he treat us this way?
I was just sitting there in the bed all alone, what was there to do? I remember when I was back home with Tye I never got bored there was always somewhere to go and things to try in the simulator... and now I'm even to scared to go near one
They said I may never see Tye, it's just one thing after the other isn't it?
My head then sprung an idea
The head of security is gone, a grin came upon my face, I might have the perfect chance to just walk right out of here and no one would be the wiser
I leaped out of the bed and ran out of the door, I went to the map to check one more time where the exit was, I then made my way to that floor and started walking to what was called the lobby
It was a decent sized room with a counter near the wall by the door
I slid around the edge of the counter so the man sitting there couldn't see me
I could see the door and the light from the outside, the real light it was beautiful almost blinding and then I slammed into something that made me fall on my butt
A tall man in what looked like a uniform had walked in the door and was blocking my path
"oh sorry" he said looking down at me, his voice sounded commanding but gentle like you had to do what he said but you felt like you could trust his words
"uhhh" I was a little intimidated by his size so I slowly started to slide backward
He made a face at me then he smirked
"are you scared of me?" he crouched down to my level as I tried to stand up "you don't have to be scared of me, I'm here to protect this place"
He was here to protect the lab? From what? Then I figured it out
"You're the new head of security, aren't you?" I said to him
He smiled "yes I am, my name is Thomas" he held out his hand "what's yours?"
"Dachii" I said taking his hand, his handshake was firm but light, what was with this guy I couldn't make heads or tails of him, he scared me but I felt safe around him
"Dachii? I don't think I've ever heard that name before, I like it it's unique it suits you" he then looked like he was looking at something over my shoulder "you have wings?" he said he sounded a little surprised
I opened my wings to show him "yes" I saw him take a step back
"Your, you're a dragon, that's amazing! I didn't even know they existed" was there no dragons other than me and Zero? There were so many other species out there I thought there was bound to be others
"What do you mean by you didn't even know dragons existed?" I asked
"there aren't supposed to be any they are part of mythology" he seemed to be pondering something "hey... your one of the experiments aren't you?" he stared at me
Dang I was caught... well as long as he knows there's no point in trying to lie
"Yes..." I sunk my head down
"What's wrong?" he asked
"I wanted to leave... but I guess I can't now" I said my voice starting to get scratchy
"Why would you want to leave? What's wrong with this place?" he asked me
I sat on the ground and a few tears ran down my face "I'm trapped here... they won't let me go...even though all of the tests on me are done"
Why was I crying, it was all fact to me now... but it still felt terrible that they were doing this
I felt strong arms lifting me into the air "please don't cry" he said softly to me
What did he care... he was going to be the one preventing me from ever leaving, all he's trying to do is make an illusion around him so that I trust him
He looked at me in the eyes, his were dark brown almost black but with the light you could see the color come out
I turned my head away so I wasn't looking at him, I refuse to let his trick work on me
"Let's go find who ever it is that takes care of you, they might be worried" he said
Ace might worry if I went missing but he knew just as well as I did that I could never make it far
He carried me; he clearly doesn't know where he's going
I sniffled and stopped my tears "do you... know where you're going?" I asked
"uhhh... not really" he seemed a little embarrassed
He stopped and looked around "I'm not sure where we are... do you know where to go?" he put me down, I knew where we were
"The stairs is that way" I pointed at the door down the hall
"Ok, come on let's go" he lifted me up again, but I struggled out of his grip and stayed on the ground "what you don't want me to lift you" he said in almost a hurt voice
"No I don't, you can go by yourself can't you?" I said
"and get in trouble on my first day what kind of impression would that be on my part" he said chuckling a little "now come on let's go... we don't have to go to who ever is supposed to be watching you... how about you help me figure this place out?" he said
I was getting a little frustrated he was still attempting to do something I just know it
Before I could reply to that I darted off towards the stairs and flew up to a higher floor
There was no way he could catch me now, I should just find Ace and Zero, this guy was bugging me
I opened the door to there stairs on another floor I couldn't hear any noise from below, was he not chasing after me?
I turned to see the hall way was clear, I felt I was safe so I didn't need to run; I walked to the test room where Zero was doing his tests
I walked into the test room to see Ace talking to some one, but I couldn't see who since Ace was in the way
I saw Zero sitting at a table and doing what seemed like writing, he must be on his final test
I walked up behind Ace "hello Ace" I said cheerfully, he then turned around
"hello there Dachii, your brother is finishing up his final test and then we were going to get something to eat, would you like to join us when he's done?" he asked
I nodded "that sounds good" I said
"Alright, and Dachii have you met this fellow yet? He's quite nice" Ace said pulling the person he was talking to so that I could see them
"Thomas!?" how did he get here
"so you have met" Ace said
I backed up a little "how'd you get here?" he just walked closer
"I found a faster way here simple as that, and you know its rude to just run away when someone asks you for help" he said, he didn't sound mad but he didn't sound happy either "but I guess you do have a reason not to like me to much" he looked a bit sad when he said that "Ace told me what happened before"
So now he knows a bit more, but still what does he care if I like him or not... but I was kind of feeling a little bad, he seemed to have a way of swaying your emotions
"I guess it's ok... you were only trying to be friendly" I said softly
He seemed to have perked up when I said that "maybe I came on a bit strong, I didn't know what had happened... but just know you can trust me, I'm going to be here to make sure everything is safe, ok?"
I sighed and then nodded, I guess I'm going to have to trust him; maybe he'll turn out to be a nice guy
"Finished!" Zero yelled from the desk waving the paper above his head, we all turned in his direction
"Very good Zero, now let's go eat" Ace said helping Zero get off of his seat
They headed for the hall way and I followed
"Are you going to come with us Thomas?" Ace asked
"Maybe later, right now I have to find my new office" he replied
Ok well there's a map at the end of the hall way so if you need help then look at it, we'll be in the cafeteria feel free to join us" Ace said waving to him
"I will, thanks" he waved back and the three of us walked to the cafeteria
Ace sat us both down at the usual table with Zero sitting next to me, Ace went off to get us some food
I saw Jay sitting not to far off I looked at him and then I had that little headache again
Was it him, who was causing it, I had never felt this before except when I was near him
"Hello Dachii" he slid over so he was sitting across from me "how have things been for you?"
"A little better since the last time... have you met my brother Zero?" I pulled Zero a little closer to show Jay
"Hello there Zero" he put out his paw, Zero stared at the paw curiously
"uhhh... Zero you're supposed to shake his paw" I whispered to him
He grabbed onto Jay's paw and shook him franticly, Jay pulled away
"He's a strong one isn't he" he said rubbing his arm
"I guess he doesn't even know his own strength"
"oww!" I looked at Zero holding his and shaking his head
"What's wrong?" I was concerned for him was it that little headache to?
He then looked up "I'm ok, it's all better now"
I looked at Jay "you're doing something aren't you?"
Jay didn't seem to flinch he just sighed and said "yes"
"What are you doing? And why does it hurt? Why us?" I asked in rapidly
"I just wanted to get to know you better, and I didn't know if you would freely talk to me so I just did what I normally do to people when I want to find out who they are... it normally doesn't hurt... sorry" his head was facing down
"You still haven't answered my first question, what are you doing?" I asked
"I'm... I'm reading your thoughts" he said quietly
Did he just say he was reading our thoughts?
"Yes" he said
"Stop doing that" I yelled at him
"Ok..." he seemed to back off
"Why didn't you just talk to us instead of doing what ever you just did?"
"I guess that's just how I've always done things" he said shrugging "could I ask you... not to tell anyone else about this"
Now he wanted us not to say anything
"Fine... but next time before you do that again warn us first please"
"Ok... I have to get back to work now, but remember what I said before... if you need someone to talk to I'm still here, I already know what has been going on lately, things will turn out better soon" he then got up and walked off to where ever his destination was
That was odd, it seemed as if he wasn't trying to hide anything from us, maybe he wanted us to know about his metal capabilities... what a strange collie
Ace came back with a few trays he brought me a lot of things like meat and a few fruits, but I had noticed that Zero's food was different, his was colder practically frozen, did he do that?
He grabbed his food and quickly started munching on it little fragments of frozen food falling back on his tray
I started to eat my food, it was good I didn't know why but meat really was my favorite thing out of all of the food that I got
Ace was sitting next me watching both of us eat with him taking little nibbles at whatever he had on his fork
Why was he staring at us like that, he's a really nice guy but he's starting to freak me out
He noticed me looking back at him and turned his head back to his food and continued eating
We ate silently, which seemed a little odd to me since there is normally some one talking
SMACK!
A loud noise caught my attention; I looked to the source of the sound
Carlos was standing at the end of the table with a book he slammed the table, but he was smiling, so he must not be angry
"sorry to interrupt but I wanted to get your attention, I have news" he looked right at me "Dachii I figured out how we can get you home" he said
"Really!" I was excited, I could see Tye again I was going to leave this place
"Yes, since the old head of security is gone, some one else has to take his place, right?" he explained
"Right..." I said waiting for more
"well he was controlling whether or not you could leave the building so now that there is a new one all we have to do is convince them that you are ready to be let out of the labs and go into the real world" when he said that I couldn't believe it, could it really be that easy all I had to do now was convince Thomas that I was able to handle things in the real world and I could go
But what if I had already ruined that chance, he had caught me once trying to leave and then I ran from him... I can't think that way; there is always another way to do things
"So how do we do this?" I asked
"First things first we find the new head of security" Carlos said
"We've already met him" I said "his name is Thomas"
"That's perfect, now we still have to find him, I can talk to him for you to see if I can get him to let you go"
I guess this was going to be easy ... but this just made things too easy
"Carlos I think I have a better idea, let me see if I can convince him myself first, if it comes from you he might only think it's because you were the one who made me, if I do this maybe he'll trust me enough to go by myself"
I was going to prove I could live in the real world... no matter what
