#5 of Warmth

Put Down It's never easy to say goodbye... ============================================================================================= Ryan's Side Aurora, Colorado -One week after Nicky and Sean's Murder- 10:30 a.m. Name: Ryan Age: 15 Ryan sat on the couch staring at the ceiling. "I can't believe their funeral's today..." Ryan closed his eyes and focused his attention on the news. "It was a week ago today that two high school seniors from Cherokee Trail High School were murdered. Nicky Anderson and Sean Douglas, a Fur, were both enjoying the senior dance at their school. What was supposed to be a night of enjoyment turned into one that shook the entire Nation. Reports from friends and other seniors say that two hours into the dance the two of them announced in front of everyone that they were a couple and then kissed each other in front of everyone. What was considered taboo was met with cheers that night, and the dance continued normally. At midnight, when the dance ended, the two were last seen heading towards their car. When screaming was heard, those nearby rushed to find the two soaked in blood and four men fleeing the scene. None of the four men have been identified, but it is believed that none of them went to Cherokee Trail. (Then how did they know...) Ryan thought. (How could they have possibly knew what had happened at the dance? It can't be a coincidence!) "The news of the murder was initially only broadcasted in Colorado, but eventually it travelled across the nation as more and more Human-Fur couples revealed themselves. And now, only a week later, Human-Fur relationships in the U.S. have begun to be accepted because of a senior couple displaying their love for each other despite the views of society. In an interview with Nicky's brother and her parents we-" The television was turned off abruptly. "I thought I told you to turn that shit off. " Ryan opened his eyes and turned his head. "Why, dad?" Name: Steve Anderson Species: Human Age: 45 "Because I don't want to hear any of that about Nicky!" Ryan's dad walked away from the couch. Ryan stood up tightening his fist. "Which part, huh!? The part where she's become an icon or the reason!?" Ryan's father turned around and grabbed Ryan's left arm. "It's because of that Fur she was dating that she was killed! It's his and every other Fur's fault Nicky's dead!" Ryan yanked his arm out his dad's grip. "You're wrong! It's because of people like you who despise Furs that Nicky's dead! The world would be better off without people like you-" Ryan was met with a punch to the face knocking him to the ground." "Steve!" Ryan's mother shouted as she came down the stairs. Name: Holly Anderson Species: Human Age: 43 "Who the fuck do you think you are talking to me, your father, like that, huh!? I didn't raise you to-" "You didn't raise me at all!" Ryan shouted as he got up wiping the blood off his lips. "Neither of you have! While you two were travelling the world it was Nicky that raised me! I barely ever saw the two of you because you thought travelling was more important than your own children!" Ryan's dad looked like he was going to punch him again, but his mom held his hand. "Why did the two of you come back?" Ryan asked with irritation. "Are we only important when we're dead!? It's hard enough to deal with Nicky and Sean dying, but now the two of you come back all-of-a-sudden!" Ryan chuckled. "Let me guess, you'll be leaving after funeral?" His parents remained silent. Ryan chuckled again. "I knew it... Do me a favor; when you leave come back less often, or don't even come back at all. I'm sure you have a house in some foreign country by now." "Oh don't worry about that!" Ryan's father shouted as he stormed upstairs. "Spain is very beautiful this time of year!" Ryan and his mother stood in silence. Her lips kept opening, but no words came out. "Just go, mom..." Ryan said as he turned his back to her. Tears formed in her eyes as she walked upstairs. Ryan chuckled as a tear ran down his face. "I'm better off alone now." * * *

-One month later- 12:00 p.m. "Ugh! I don't know how Nicky could do it!" Ryan sighed. "I didn't realize running the HFA would be so stressful! Maybe one day I should get help..." Ryan sighed and looked out the window. "Huh?" Ryan saw a moving truck parked four houses down across the street. "So someone finally bought the house, huh?" Ryan looked at the work on the table. "I guess I better welcome them to the neighborhood then!" As Ryan crossed the street he asked tried to picture what the new neighbors were like. "Human or Fur? It'd be cool to finally have Furs in the neighborhood, but odds are they're human." Ryan sighed. "At the least they better be friendly." As Ryan approached the moving van a man in white overalls exited the house. The man went to the back of the truck, detached the unloading ramp, and closed the doors. "You're done unloading everything already!?" Ryan asked with disbelief. "How long have you been here?" The mover didn't look at Ryan as he opened the driver's door. "Been here since nine." (Wow...) Ryan sighed. (I guess I've really had my hands tied with the HFA.) As the van drove off Ryan walked to the front door. (Here goes...) Ryan rang the doorbell. A few seconds later the door opened. Ryan looked up at the man who was taller than his own father and had a pistol on the side of his waist. Ryan's eyes went wide feeling intimidated. "Can I help you?" the man asked. Ryan snapped out of his trance. "Hi, I'm Ryan. I live four houses down that way, and I just wanted to welcome you and your family to the neighborhood." Ryan held his right hand out. The man returned the gesture and shook Ryan's hand. Ryan smiled after the handshake as he rubbed his hand. (My hand! This guy has a grip!) The man chuckled; seeing Ryan's pain despite his smile. "Call me Johnson" Name: Eric Johnson Age: 34 "Nice to meet you err... Johnson" Ryan said as he tried to look past Eric. "So where the rest of your family? I'm interested in meeting everyone." "Sorry to disappoint you, kid, but it's only me living here." Ryan's eyes went wide. "This house is large enough for a family of eight, and you're telling me you live here alone!?" Eric just nodded. "How can you afford a place like this by yourself?" Eric sighed. "Being in Military has its perks, I guess." "Really!?" Ryan asked with excitement. "You're in the Military?" "Was... I was in the Military but now I'm retired." Eric walked inside the house. "Want to come in?" "Sure!" Ryan followed behind Eric. He saw all of the furniture had been placed and boxes piled everywhere. "Take a seat." Eric gestured towards a table. Ryan took a seat. Eric opened a cooler. "Pepsi or water; which would you like?" "Water please. I never really had a taste for soda." Eric grabbed two bottled waters. He handed one to Ryan before sitting down. "So what was it like in the Military?" Ryan asked as he opened his bottle. Eric sighed. "I don't want to talk about it." "That bad, huh?" "You could say that..." Eric closed his eyes for a few seconds. "What about you, kid? Where's your family." "My ‘family' died a month ago, and my parents are living in Europe." Eric had a confused look on his face. "It's complicated, OK. I live by myself." "But you're only a teenager!" Eric said in disbelief. How is that possible!?" Ryan sighed. "Well, my parents pay for the house and utilities; I'm just responsible for my own food." "I doubt you have a job. So how have you been paying for it all this time?" "Well originally it was my older sister who was earning the money for food, but when she died a month ago all of her funds were transferred into an account for me. It's enough to last me for a year or so. I'm sure by that time I'll have a job of my own. Eric was silent. He rubbed the back of his head. "Looks like you've got it rough. Anything I can do to help?" "Oh no!" Ryan was shaking his head. "You don't have to do anything." Eric was silent again for a while. "Well I'm afraid I can't just allow you live like that. Come over every other day and I'll have something for you to eat. That way you'll spend less money on food." "No seriously, I appreciate the offer but-" "It wasn't an offer" Eric said with a serious tone. Eric stared at Ryan with a serious face. Ryan's eyes went wide. (My god... I want to say no, but those eyes... they won't let me... who is this guy?) Ryan sighed as he finally blinked. "Alright, but only until I get a job. Deal?" "Deal." Eric held out his right hand. Ryan stared at his hand for a second and hesitantly brought his hand forward. As the two shook Ryan noticed that Eric's grip wasn't as painful as last time. (He's very interesting, but I don't know whether to consider him friendly) Ryan laughed in his head. * * *

Two weeks later -6:30 p.m.- "So everything's unpacked now?" Ryan asked as he looked around Eric's house. "Yep." Eric said as he got off the phone. "The pizza will be here in 30 minutes." "Pizza?" Ryan asked sarcastically raising an eyebrow. "You're kidding right?" "Hey, I said I would have something for you to eat; I never said I would always be making it." He saw Ryan roll his eyes. "Now quit complaining or else I won't give you the tour." "A Tour? A tour of a house that can hold eight people and yet is only inhabited by one man who doesn't like to mention anything about his past?" Eric didn't say anything as he walked upstairs. (I wonder if I went too far...) Ryan followed behind Eric. At the top of the stairs he saw three doors open. "About time" Eric said plainly. "This is the master bedroom and those two rooms are the guest rooms." Eric motioned Ryan into each room. "I really can't see myself having any guests over any time soon, but it never hurts to be prepared." Eric walked to a door that was closed. "I think you might like this." Eric opened door revealing a room filled with display cases filled with everything from knives to pistols to shotguns to automatic rifles. "Wow..." Ryan said silently as he walked into the room. "You've got quite a collection here. Are they real?" "They are, but they're only for display purposes. All of the guns have been set so they can't fire any bullets." "Where'd did you get them all?" "Souvenirs from my time in the military. I was proficient with every weapon they had to offer, so proficient that they were going to offer me to become an instructor." "So why did you refuse?" "I didn't refuse; when the war started I was called out to the front lines. When I returned they gave me an honorary discharge." Eric sighed. "What happened?" Eric stood still for a moment. "Follow me." Eric led Ryan to door across the hallway. He opened the door and had Ryan walk in. The room was filled with many pictures and medals. "Look around you, kid. All these pictures are the men from my squad who were killed." Eric pointed to a group picture on the wall. "That picture was taken when we all were deployed." Ryan stared at the picture as Eric came walked up behind him. "150 brave men are in that picture, but only three came back alive." Eric pointed at the men. "James Taggert, Jason Keith, and myself." Ryan just kept looking at the picture, stunned by how many of the men he was looking at had died. "The three of us didn't talk to each other when we came back. I was to resume my duties stateside, but then... Taggert and Keith committed suicide. They had both suffered for post traumatic stress disorder, and I was immediately given a discharge and put on suicide watch." "Did you ever think of killing yourself?" Eric shook his head. "After they committed suicide I realized that I was the only one left alive." Eric closed his eyes. "I watched each one of them fight on the battlefield... and I watched each one of them die. No one but me will ever know about what happened, and I don't intend to throw away the memories of all the men I served with by killing myself." The two of them were silent. Ryan didn't know what to say. Eric sighed. "I was considered one of the best soldiers of my time, and yet... I couldn't save any of them." Eric's hands tightened. The grip in Eric's hands softened as he let out another sigh. " Ryan was silent. (I know what it's like to feel helpless... I couldn't do anything for Nicky and Sean... I don't want to stand by and do nothing again. I hope Johnson agrees to my request.) "Johnson?" Eric opened his eyes and looked at Ryan. "Yes?" "You said you were going to become an instructor in the military... could you maybe teach me some things?" "Forget it kid. You know how Colorado is with High School kids and guns. I can't just give you a gun to train with." "I didn't ask for gun to own; I just want to learn how to use one just in case when I'm older. Eric stared at Ryan. "How old are you?" "I'm fifteen." "When's your birthday?" "May 31st." Eric sighed. "Tell you what; when you turn sixteen I'll teach you how to use a gun." Disappointment filled Ryan's face. "I know that's seven months away, but I can teach you something else until then." Ryan face turned curious. "What's that?" "Do you have any martial arts experience?" "I was a blue belt in Karate, but that was many years ago." Eric chuckled. "That's good experience, but what I'm going to teach you is a lot more effective than Karate; I'm going to teach you Close Quarters Combat. I need to warn you though, training will be tough. Are you up to it?" "I am." Ryan said calmly. Eric smiled. "Good. Training is every night from 7:00 to 8:30. You can have Saturday to relax, but on Sunday it's 6:00 to 8:30. Got it?" Ryan's eyes went wide. "I told you it wouldn't be easy didn't I? First lesson will be next week; I have to do some things before then. Ryan sighed. (Now what have gotten myself into?) *Ding Dong* (Well at least the pizza's here...) * * *

One week later- (Geez what's been going over at Johnson's house? He hasn't let me enter his house since last week and there've been all of these different trucks parked outside of his house.) Ryan rang the doorbell. The door opened. "Hey, perfect timing; I've got something to show you." Ryan entered the house. Eric opened a door with stairs leading to the basement. "What's been going on here for the past week?" Ryan asked as the two walked down the stairs. "I got some constructionists to remodel my basement. You know... take down a few walls for... space. You'd be surprised how big a basement can be." Eric turned the corner at the bottom of the stairs. He flipped a switch illuminating the whole basement. "You're kidding right?" Ryan said with his eyes wide open. "You actually have a shooting range in your basement!?" "Yep. I had all of the walls torn down in this area to make room for it. I don't like getting rusty at my shooting." Eric put his hand on the wall. "I had them coat the walls with a material that'll make this place soundproof; no one outside will hear a thing." (So cool...) "Unfortunately you won't be using this area for a while." Eric said. Ryan popped out of stupor and glared at Eric. "You'll be using these two rooms." Eric pointed at two doors behind him. He opened the door on the left and had Ryan look inside. "This is the fitness room. It has equipment that'll help you get faster and stronger." Eric opened the door on the right. "This is the sparring room. We'll be using it to train." Eric looked to Ryan. "Do you still want to go through with it?" "Yes" Ryan said smiling. "Let's do this Johnson." Ryan held out his hand. "Please," Eric shook Ryan's hand. "Call me Eric." * * *

Two years later -Night after meeting Ken- "Guess what." Ryan said running on the treadmill. "What?" Eric asked running on a treadmill next to Ryan. "I got into a fight today at school." Ryan said smiling. "And why are you happy about that?" "Well not only did I get to use some moves today, but I got to use them protecting this Fur, Ken. Speaking of which, I'm going to be hanging out with him for a while; so I might miss a few practice sessions." Eric didn't look at Ryan. "Do as you wish, kid. I've taught you how to fight, I've helped you become fit, and I even taught you how to shoot a .45 caliber. And now that you got that job at the sporting goods store, you really aren't being forced to come here anymore." "And I thank you for all of that, and I still want to come over it's just..." Ryan stopped his treadmill and sighed. "I just feel bad for Ken. I mean I would feel better if he had friends or was at least part of the HFA, but he has no one, and sooner or later his flirting is going to get him into serious trouble." Eric stopped his treadmill and patted Ryan on the back. "Take as much time off as you need. Being a friend to someone is more important than training." Eric started walking towards the stairs. "By the way," Eric said as he walked. "I marinated a few steaks, if you're interested." Ryan chuckled. "Sure. Why not?" * * *

-Two weeks before meeting Jade- "Eric I want to talk to you about something..." Ryan said sitting at the kitchen table. "Shoot." "I've been watching on the news how there's been an increase in Fur hate crimes in downtown Denver. And it's not just Furs that are being killed; humans who support equality for Furs are also being found dead." "It's unfortunate, but there's nothing we can do about that." "I know we can't do anything about what's going on downtown; I'm more worried about the HFA. I've been planning to turn the HFA into a community event, but I fear what's happening downtown will eventually reach the suburbs." "Hate crimes against Furs have been common since they revealed themselves. You know that just as much as I do." "But something just doesn't seem right about it." Ryan sighed. "These recent murders have mostly involved key members of groups similar to the HFA. It's almost as though they're purposely being targeted." "And what would be the point of targeting these individuals?" Eric asked looking a bit concerned. "I don't know. The only reason I can think of is to inflict fear into people who want equality for Furs. But that's just my conjecture." Ryan sighed. "But if that's true then the HFA will be in danger if it expands..." Eric was silent; unable to come up with any solutions. "I'm not worried about those in the HFA; it's only been the leaders who have been targeted. I'm not afraid of my well-being either; it's..." Ryan was silent. "You're the only one who leads the HFA, Ryan, who else would be targeted besides you?" "...Well the HFA can't become a community event by itself. In order for it to happen, I'll need to join with one of the other schools in the area. If I do that, however, I'm going to need to make the leader from that school a leader in the HFA..." "Which is what you're afraid of?" Ryan nodded his head slowly. "I don't know if they have any self defense experience; I don't know if they'll be safe. I mean, I take care of myself because you-" Ryan's eyes widened. "Because you... trained me..." Ryan looked at Eric. Eric, getting the hint, sighed. "I don't know kid..." "Please Eric. Just teach them what you taught me; I'll even help you out." Ryan face had a slightly pleading look. Eric sighed. "Fine, but tell me this; how many other schools are there in the area?" "Four." "Do you plan to have all of them join the HFA?" "Yes, eventually." Eric sighed. "Just make sure the first person you choose will agree to the training." Ryan nodded his head smiling. * * *

-Day after meeting Jade- "Are you serious, Ryan?" Jade asked as he and Ryan walked down the stairs into Eric's basement. Name: Jade Age: 18 "I'm serious, Jade. He's going to teach you a lot about self defense. How do you think I was able to take down that Fur yesterday?" "That was cool, but why do you insist that I learn all of this?" "I'll explain later." Ryan said as he saw Eric approaching the two of them. "Hey Eric." "Hey kid." Eric looked at Jade. "So he's the first person you chose?" "Yep, and he's agreed to the training." Eric looked at Jade again. "I wish you had warned me that it might have been a Fur." "You got something against Furs?" Jade glared at Eric. "I have nothing against Furs or anyone else for that matter" Eric said glaring back at Jade. "The problem is that Furs aren't great learners of fighting styles. Furs have speed, they have strength, but for some reason they can't control both at the same time." Jade's ears flattened in disappointment. Eric looked over Jade again. "You seem to have a very good physique. Tell me, how old are you?" "I'll be turning nineteen soon." "I see." Eric walked towards the weapons locker. To make up for you not being able to learn how to fight, I'll teach you how to use these instead." Eric motioned Jade and Ryan to come to the weapons locker. While Ryan was used to the sight, Jade stared with awe. "The first is the .45 caliber pistol that both Ryan and I use. The second is this." Eric took out a P90 and handed it to Jade." Both Ryan and Jade's eyes widened. "You don't really expect Jade to be carrying that around with him everyone, do you?" Ryan asked not knowing what Eric was thinking. "Of course not! It's just to give him something else to practice with. And with his physique he'll be able to handle it with no problem." "Well since you won't let me use any other weapon; can I at least practice using two pistols simultaneously?" "Fine if it'll stop making you act like a child." Eric tossed a pistol to Ryan then handed Jade a pistol and P90. "You probably don't live close to me like Ryan does, so try to come at least once a week. Jade just stared at the guns in his hand. "Alright. Thank you Er-" "Johnson" Eric interrupted. "You are to call me Johnson until I allow you to call me Eric, got it?" Eric glared at Jade. "Got it" Jade said with his eyes wide. "Good. Now let's see how good you are with those guns." Eric walked to the firing line. "What have I gotten myself into?" Jade sighed. Ryan patted Jade's back. "I asked myself the same thing when I started." "But you got used to it, right?" Jade asked. "Nope. I still ask myself that." Ryan laughed. Jade chuckled. "Oh joy." The two of them walked to the firing line. * * *

-Two weeks later- Outside Gateway High School "What's her name again?" Jade asked Ryan. "Olivia. Apparently she's also on the women's track team so she holds her club meetings two hours after school." "That seems inconvenient for the members." Jade said. "Not really; apparently the grades of the students who have joined her club improved after they joined. Those who truly want to be a part of her club stay after school for two hours and do all of their class work. Olivia's system is excellent." "Whatever..." Jade's ears flattened. "Don't tell me you're jealous now!" Ryan laughed. "Shut up! She should be on the track filed now. Let's go!" As Ryan and Jade walked to the back of the school they could see many runners running the track. "So which one is Olivia?" Jade asked. "I don't know..." Ryan looked around. "Let's ask that person." Ryan pointed at a girl holding a stopwatch next to the field. The two approached the girl. "Excuse me." The girl's attention turned to Ryan and Jade. "Can I help you two?" "We're looking for Olivia." Ryan looked out at the field. "Which one is she?" "Oh! She's coming up right now." The girl pointed at the approaching runner as she ran passed them. "She's the fastest person on the team. She's already on her last lap; it's amazing." "What's the big deal?" Jade asked pointing at the next runner coming up. "That cheetah Fur doesn't seem far behind." The girl giggled. "She still has three laps to go." "So much for the fastest animal in the world..." Ryan commented with a smirk. Jade rolled his eyes. "You two are free to wait for her here; I need to stand by the finish line to record the times. It was nice to meet you two." The girl walked off. A minute later Olivia ran up to Ryan and Jade. "What can I help you two with?" Name: Olivia Age: 16 "Hi Olivia. I'm Ryan, this is Jade. We're here to make an offer." "Oh really? And what would that be?" "Have you heard of the HFA?" "Of course I've heard of the HFA. There's been news going around that they joined with some unpopular club from Grandview." Jade glared at Olivia. "I mean I've heard good stories about the leader from Grandview, but I've also heard that many members transferred to Cherokee Trail. Guess he wasn't much of a leader..." Jade was staring daggers at Olivia. (Oh dear, Jade already wants to kill her. Good thing he doesn't have a gun on him now...) Olivia smirked. "Well enough about Jade, let's talk about you Ryan. I can only assume the reason you would be visiting me at my school is to offer a union, correct?" Jade's eyes widened and Ryan smirked. "You're very sharp Olivia. But since you already know why we're here, what's your answer?" Olivia bit her lip for a second then smiled. "Why not? Might be fun!" "Great!" Ryan said. "But could you go somewhere with us tomorrow?" "Sure. I'll just let everyone know that there won't be any meetings for the rest of the week." "Alright see you tomorrow." * * *

-The next day- Eric's basement Eric looked over Olivia. "Another Fur... which means no fighting styles, but I can tell that Olivia is extremely fast. That could be used as an advantage; giving her a heavy weapon would slow her down..." Eric walked to the weapons locker and opened a drawer. He took out a thick piece of cloth along with a pistol. He laid the cloth on the table and unrolled it. "Whoa..." The three watched as what was concealed in the cloth was revealed. "In here are twenty throwing knives. Extremely light, but extremely sharp. Olivia would be able to conceal them behind her clothing..." Eric looked at Olivia. "You need to start wearing clothes, the same for you Jade." Jade and Olivia's ears flattened. "Practice using these then you'll be able to take down anyone stealthily." Eric rolled up the knives and tossed Olivia the material." "You're kidding right?" Olivia asked. "You're training me to use a gun and to throw knives? Not only that, it sounds like you're training me to become an assassin!" Eric chuckled. "Guess my mind is still stuck in the military. Do you have a problem with any of this?" "Are you kidding!?" Olivia shouted with a smile. "Bring it on!" * * *

-One week later- Eric's Basement "So you're Regina from Eaglecrest?" Eric asked the newcomer. Name: Regina Age: 19 "Yes sir." "You don't seem very athletic... What are your best subjects in school?" "Um... biology, health, and first aid." "Perfect. I'll teach you to fight and use one of these." Eric tossed a .45 caliber pistol to Regina. Regina shrieked at the incoming gun. "Don't worry. I think you'd make a better medic than fighter. The gun is for just in case." "Just in case of what?" Regina asked holding her gun. "What exactly did I agree to?" "To protect those around you..." Eric said. "Something I wasn't able to do." Everyone was silent. "So..." Eric started. "Are you still in, Regina?" "Yes sir..." * * *

-Five days later- "So finally the last member arrives." Eric said examining the last addition. "Your name is Derek?" Name: Derek Age: 18 Derek nodded his head. "Not much of a talker, huh?" Eric examined Derek again. "It's unfortunate, but your size would make you an easy target if you were in a gun fight; being a bear and all..." Derek sighed. "So I'll give you something else." Eric went to weapons locker and pulled out the usual pistol and a large case. Eric placed the case on the table and opened it. "This is an M21. A fairly popular sniper rifle. Learn how to use this and you'll be able to support your friends from a distance." The others looked at each other confused. "What the hell is he talking about?" Regina asked the others. "Is he training us to defend ourselves or to be in the army?" "It is weird that he's teaching us to use guns that we can't carry around." Jade said. "I'm not complaining!" Olivia said. "I'm having fun using these!" Olivia took two knives from her pockets and smiled. "I guess he really feels guilty about not being able to protect his friends..." Jade said. (No... I know you Eric. You wouldn't be doing this if you didn't have a good reason to. What aren't you telling us? What aren't you telling me?) * * *

-Later that night- Ryan sat at the table with Eric after the others left. "Eric..." Ryan said. "What are doing?" "What do you mean?" "I mean why are training us in military combat?" "I already told you; to defend yourselves!" "The fighting and pistols would have been enough for that. What's this fascination with teaching Jade to use an automatic, teaching Olivia to use knives, focusing on Regina's first-aid skills, and training Derek to use a sniper rifle? At first I really thought you were trying to be fair, but it seems like it's your focus." Eric was silent. "What are you planning Eric?" Eric sighed. "After you had told me about the increasing violence I got a hold of some of my old buddies across the country. Apparently it's not just Denver that's being affected; every major city in the U.S. is experiencing the same thing. And they all started around the same time..." Ryan's eyes widened. "You can't possibly be saying that they're all connected?" "I do... This isn't random violence like you said; all of this is being coordinated by someone. I've been trying to figure out the source of the problem." "The source of the problem?" "Yes, I believe either a small organization, or even a single person is making all of the orders. What's worse is that I believe all of the orders are coming from somewhere in Denver." Ryan chuckled. "You're kidding right? I mean I would have expected the origin to be in one of the cliché locations like Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, or even Jersey! But you're telling me this all started from the Mile-High City, which is only known because of Columbine and that show South Park!?" "A unique way to put it, but yes." "And so training us to use these weapons is for what?" "I'm only preparing you for the worst scenario. I hope to god that the five of you will never need to use those weapons against somebody." Ryan was silent. "...Should we tell the others?" Eric sighed. "No... it's best if they don't know about the circumstances. Just let them go on with their lives. This is a secret between you and me." * * *

-One week before meeting Kathy- Ryan, Jade, Olivia, Regina, and Derek sat in Ryan's living room. "Narcotics?" Derek asked looking at Jade. "Yes. Recently I found out that my brother has been dealing with drugs. It explains all of the mysterious money he's been making..." "That's terrible!" Regina exclaimed. "Have you confronted Trace about it?" "Yes, but ever since I brought it up he hasn't come home." "How did you find out about this?" Olivia asked. "Five days ago a man came to my house looking for Trace. He claimed he was a friend of Trace and came to warn him of something. When I told him Trace wasn't around he told me everything that he and Trace did. He didn't go into much detail; all he told me to do was to get Trace to quit at all costs. Then before he left he gave me a number and told me to wait a week before calling." "And you're going to call him on Sunday?" Ryan asked. Jade nodded his head. "What exactly are you going to talk about?" "I don't know... I guess I'll ask him where my brother goes and take out anyone who gets in my way." "Don't be so reckless Jade!" said Olivia. "Take me with you!" Olivia smiled. "That's not necessary, Olivia. I can do it by myself." "Olivia has a point, Jade." Regina said. "It might be too dangerous doing it yourself. The rest of us would be happy to help you out." "I'm afraid that's not the problem." Ryan said. "It's up to Eric to decide whether or not to use the guns." "Then ask him!" Olivia said. Ryan shook his head. "Eric's going to want a reason for it. Jade, when you call your informant on Sunday, try to learn as much as you can, and, if possible, have him meet us next Saturday night. We'll talk about it more during the event." "Alright..." Jade said. The room went silent. Olivia looked around. "C'mon what's with the gloomy atmosphere all of a sudden? Quick! Reveal any gossip you know!" The other looked at Olivia with a confused look. "Just do it!" "Well..." Regina started. "Derek and I recently found out someone has a crush on Ken." Ryan, Jade, and Olivia's eyes went wide. "Oh! Tell me who it is, please!" Olivia jumped up and down." "Never thought that would happen..." Jade said. "Hush!" Olivia exclaimed. "Now tell us who it is!" Regina sighed. "I'm only going to tell Ryan, because he's the only one capable of keeping a secret." Regina looked at Jade and Olivia. Almost simultaneously Jade and Olivia said "What's that supposed to mean!?" "Oh nothing. Regina went the side of Ryan's head and whispered into his ear." (Lauren? I would never have guessed...) * * *

-Later that night- Eric's house "We have a problem, Eric..." "What kind of problem?" "We just found out that Jade's brother might be in serious danger... and we all want to help him out..." "With the guns I've been letting you use?" Ryan nodded his head. Eric sighed. "Look kid I can't just let you five use these weapons just to save one person. It's unfortunate but I can't help you with this." "No!" Ryan banged on the table. "You have to help us! Something bad is going to happen and I know it! Now either you help us out or we might just go alone!" Eric tightened his fists. "Kid... I'm going to need more information about what's exactly we're going to be dealing with." "Then make sure you come on Saturday. I'll have more information for you." Ryan walked towards the door." "Ryan!" Eric shouted. Ryan's eyes widened; it was the first time Eric had called him by his name. "If you really think something bad might happen. Then you might want to sever your relationships with those close to you." Ryan walked out the door without responding or turning back. He started walking home. (Sever my connections? Besides the five of you guys the only other person is Ken...) Ryan stopped walking. "Ken..." (I can't sever my relationship with him.) Ryan then remembered what he had learned earlier that day. (Lauren... She's my only chance.) * * *

-Present day. Ten minutes after baseball game- Dugout Ryan and Eric were alone in the dugout. "I take it you've learned something new?" Eric asked Ryan. Ryan remained silent. "I guessing it's as bad as you thought?" "It's worse, Eric. I think that we might be dealing with the source you told me about months ago." Eric's face went serious. "Are you sure?" Ryan nodded his head. "Jade told me that another Fur massacre will be taking place soon. I thought it was weird at first that some drug lord in downtown Denver could do something like that, but then I remembered what you told me. It seems to fit." Eric closed his eyes and sighed. After he didn't say anything for a while Ryan stood up. "Look Eric, I already told the others we're going to strike tomorrow night, and that's with or without your help." Ryan walked passed Eric to the stairs. "If you'll excuse me... Kathy is waiting for me." "Tell me..." Ryan turned to Eric. "Tell me why you decided to fall in love now. You knew the risks before you even met her and yet that didn't stop you. What do you think will happen to her if something were to happen to you?" Ryan remained silent then turned his head and smiled. "I guess I better hope nothing happens to me." Ryan walked out of dugout. Eric closed his eyes again and chuckled. "You really know how to get a response from me, Ryan." * * *

-Present time- Ryan and the others were sitting on the ground as an unknown man approached them. "You must be Jade's informant, right?" Ryan asked the man as his face came into view. "Yes. My name is Doug." Name: Doug Species: Human Age: 26 Eric approached Doug. "Before we discuss anything, I want to know why you're telling us all of this." "I had joined the narcotics business for the money. After a couple of years I rose in the ranks and became one of Steven's most trusted men. Soon I met Trace. He was newcomer and didn't talk much, but we eventually became close allies. When I heard what Steven was planning I tried to help Trace, but I couldn't get my message to him. Steven is forbidding us to talk to the Furs otherwise he would personally kill us. I just don't want anything to happen to Trace; he's the only real friend I have." "Very well, we'll continue this at my hou-" "YOU!" a voice shouted. Eric turned around and saw Kathy charging towards him and Doug. In an instant Kathy tackled Doug to the ground. Kathy had her paws on Doug's neck. The others quickly got up and pulled Kathy off of Doug. "Let me go!" Kathy shouted. "It's because of him my two brothers are dead!" Everyone looked at Doug. "I remember you..." Doug said. "It was Steven who killed your brothers; not me!" "You were there and just watched it happen! You didn't do anything to stop him! You're just to blame!" "I saved your life at least!" "Liar! You were just concerned about facing child murder charges!" Doug remained silent. "Now tell me where Steven is so I can pay him back for what he did to Chris and David!" "Kathy..." Kathy gasped and turned to see Ryan. "I'm sorry for what happened to your brothers, but just leave this to us." "What are you talking about?" Kathy asked worriedly. She looked at the seriousness in Ryan's face then saw the same look in the others' faces. "What are you guys planning to do?" "...We're going to kill Steven..." Ryan said. Kathy's eyes widened as she shook her head. "No... no that can't be! You're a kind, gentle person Ryan! There's no way you would..." Ryan looked away from Kathy. "We all have our dark sides I'm afraid." "Then take me with you!" "No!" Ryan shouted at Kathy. Kathy was taken aback by Ryan's tone at her. "I don't want to risk losing someone close to me again." "You think I want to either!? Take me with you, Ryan, please take me with you!" Ryan remained silent. "Why won't you answer me!?" (I'm sorry about this, Kathy...) "Shut up!" Ryan shouted. Kathy gasped as her eyes widened. "I shouldn't have met you! I shouldn't have saved you! "I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have fallen in love with you... It was all a mistake!" Kathy was silent before tears formed in her eyes. She closed her eyes as tears started forming. "David was right about humans..." Kathy muttered. She opened her eyes and looked at Ryan. "I hate you... I wish I had just died last night in that alley." Kathy's eyes started to close from exhaustion. "I don't care what happens to you now. It doesn't matter if you live or die... I'm already dead now..." Kathy fell into unconsciousness. Ryan looked away from Kathy and clenched his fists. (I don't expect you to forgive me Kathy. But I couldn't live with myself if something happened to you. I'm only sorry it had to end like this...) The others watched as Ryan picked Kathy up. "Let's go..." Ryan walked off the parking lot. The others followed saying nothing. Ryan, Jade, and Olivia got into Eric's car, while Derek and Doug got into Regina's car. The ride was only five minutes, but seemed like hours of torture to Ryan. "She can rest in the guest room" Eric said as they entered his house. Ryan carried Kathy up the stairs and laid her on the bed. Ryan looked down her. (I guess whether I live or die tomorrow... this is goodbye.) Ryan leaned down, his face coming closer to Kathy's. When they were an inch apart Ryan stopped. He sighed and stood up walking to the door. "Take care of yourself..." Ryan whispered as he closed the door. ============================================================================================= Kathy's Side Kathy was still asleep from exhaustion. The last thing she remembered was watching a movie with Ryan. "Steven is forbidding us to talk to the Furs otherwise he would personally kill us. I just don't want anything to happen to Trace; he's the only real friend I have." Kathy's eyes slowly opened. Her vision slowly came into focus as she looked towards the voices. (That guy... why does he look familiar?) As the man's face came into focus Kathy's eyes shot open. "YOU!" Kathy shouted as she jumped to her feet and charged at the man. With great force she tackled him to the ground. (I'm going to make you pay!) Kathy was then pulled back by the others. "Let me go!" Kathy shouted. "It's because of him my two brothers are dead!" All eyes focused on him. "I remember you..." the man said as he got off the ground. "It was Steven who killed your brothers; not me!" "You were there and just watched it happen! You didn't do anything to stop him! You're just to blame!" Kathy shouted back at him. "I saved your life at least!" "Liar! You were just concerned about facing child murder charges!" He remained silent. (I knew it!) "Now tell me where Steven is so I can pay him back for what he did to Chris and David!" "Kathy..." Kathy let out a gasp. (Ryan...) Kathy slowly turned around. "I'm sorry for what happened to your brothers, but just leave this to us." (Leave it you?) "What are you talking about?" Ryan didn't say anything; he just looked at Kathy with a serious face. (Why are you giving me that look?) Kathy looked at the faces of the others she had met that day. (They all have the same face... even Olivia.) Kathy looked back at Ryan. "What are you guys panning to do?" "...We're going to kill Steven... Ryan finally said. (Ryan... you're going to kill him?) Kathy shook her head. "No... no that can't be! You're a kind, gentle person Ryan! There's no way you would..." Kathy watched as Ryan turned away from her. "We all have our dark sides I'm afraid." (What's going on? He's acting completely different from earlier...) Images of her brothers lying on the ground flashed through her mind. "Then take me with you!" "No!" Ryan shouted. Kathy's eyes widened. (Why are you yelling at me?) "I don't want to risk losing someone close to me again." "You think I want that either!? Take me with you, Ryan, please take me with you!" (I can't lose you too...) She got no response from Ryan. (Ryan?...) "Why won't you answer me!?" "Shut up!" Ryan shouted. Kathy gasped. (Ryan...?) "I shouldn't have met you! I shouldn't have saved you! "I shouldn't have... I shouldn't have fallen in love with you... It was all a mistake!" Tears formed in Kathy's eyes. Memories started to play through her mind. "They might not be hunting us anymore, but they still despise us." "I'm sure there are humans who aren't like that, right" "Hmm, I doubt it" "Why are you being nice to me? I'm a Fur, aren't all humans supposed to hate us?" "What's there to hate about you?" "...I love you, Ryan" "I love you too, Kathy." "Welcome to the family, Kathy." (Did none of it mean anything to you, Ryan? Was it all just a game to you?) "Humans don't want to have anything to do with us unless they have selfish reasons to do so." (David was right...) Kathy's eyes closed as tears formed in them. "David was right about humans..." Kathy opened her eyes and looked at Ryan. "I hate you... I wish I had just died last night in that alley." Kathy's eyes started to close. "I don't care what happens to you now. It doesn't matter if you live or die... I'm already dead now..." (I have no one now...) Kathy fell asleep. * * * "I'm back again..." Kathy looked around at her old apartment. "Chris? David?" Kathy frowned when neither answered. "Have you two abandoned me too?" "We would never do that" a faint voice said. Kathy turned around and saw Chris. "What's happening to you, Chris!?" Kathy asked. "I can see through you now..." Kathy held up her paw and moved it closer and closer to Chris. "I can't even touch you now..." "Listen to me Kathy. The only reason you were ever able to see me and David was because of Ryan." "What are you talking about?" "Just as David and I are bound to your soul; there are individuals who are bound to his soul. When you first met Ryan a connection formed between us and those bound to his soul. It allowed us to communicate with the two of you. Our connection is fading because the bond you and Ryan share is disappearing." "What about David? Where is he?" "I don't know; we've became separated after the fight you and Ryan had..." ============================================================================================= Unknown Side "No... It can't be him!" David said. "What's wrong, David?" Chris asked. "Don't you remember him, Chris? He was there when we were killed." Chris' eyes widened at the realization. "Doug..." "What's the problem?" Sean asked. "They say he's an informant so he must be here to help." "You don't understand" David said. "Doug is Steven's right hand man." The four of them listened to the conversation Doug and Eric was having. "I had joined the narcotics business for the money. I just don't want anything to happen to Trace; he's the only real friend I have." "You see!" Nicky said. "He wants to help to protect his friend." Despite her statement David's eyes grew wider with fear as he listened to what Doug was saying. Chris became worried. "What's going on David?" "We got to warn Kathy, Chris! We have to tell her Doug is-" "YOU!" David was cut off. The four of them watched the conflict that unfolded between Kathy and Doug. And then the one between her and Ryan. As the four of them continued to watch Chris noticed something was wrong. "Nicky! Sean! You're fading!" "You are too!" was the last thing Nicky shouted before they completely disappeared. Chris and David looked at themselves. "We're not fading..." David said. "We are to them." Chris said. Our connection with them is disappearing." "We have to do something then!" David shouted. "We have to get Kathy to-" David cut himself off. "Chris you're fading now!" "So are you!" "I don't understand! Why are the two of us separating!?" "I don't know, David. We have to fix this at all costs!" David completely disappeared. ============================================================================================= Kathy's Side "And that's the last time I saw him... Kathy something is wrong. You and Ryan have to-" "Don't mention him... I don't want to have anything to do with him again." "Kathy... but if you don't David and I will never be able to visit you like this again." "I don't care..." Kathy said looking at the floor. "Just leave me alone now." Chris approached Kathy. "Kathy..." "I said leave me alone!" Everything around Kathy slowly faded away. "Very well, Kathy..." * * *

-10:30 a.m.- Kathy shot out of bed panting. She looked around. (Where am I?) Kathy got out of bed and walked downstairs. (How'd I get here?) "I see you're up." Kathy gasped as she turned around. "Oh you're that umpire from yesterday... where am I?" "You're at my house. We took you here after you passed out." Kathy remained silent. "Is Ryan here?" "No; he's at his house down the street." "Good. I'd rather not see him before I left." "You're leaving? Where exactly do plan to go?" "I don't know. I've spent four years on the street. I can take care of myself." Eric sighed. "Well I'm not going to stop you. Ryan told me to let you do whatever you wanted when you woke up." Kathy remained silent. "The least I can offer you is food and a shower before you go." "Shower..." Images of herself and Ryan passed through her mind. "No! I'm fine. I'm just going to leave." Kathy reached for the door handle. "You're welcome to stay for a while if you want." Eric said as Kathy opened the door. "Thank you, but I don't want to be around him anymore." Kathy closed the door behind her. Outside she just stared at the sky. (So where do I go now?) Without thinking, Kathy just started walking. (I guess I'll go wherever my feet take me...) After a half hour of walking Kathy realized where she was. (I'm at the park... I walked all the way to the park...) Kathy looked at the lake. (Well... I guess I never got the chance to see it close up.) Kathy walked towards the lake noticing all of the park goers. She found a bench and took a seat. In the distance she could see the Rocky Mountains while the sun reflected off the water. (It's beautiful) Kathy let out a yawn. (I slept for hours and yet I'm still tired. Maybe the view is making me tired...) Kathy continued to stare at the lake. "Kathy? Is that you?" Kathy heard her name being called, but didn't turn her head to see who it was. "Hey, Kathy! It's me, Ken. And you remember Lauren right?" "Hi, Kathy." Kathy turned her head to see Ken and Lauren holding hands. She let off a small smile. "What are you two doing here?" "Lauren and I were going for a walk." Ken looked around. "Are you alone? Where's Ryan?" Kathy remained silent. "What's wrong?" "Are you and Ryan fighting?" Lauren asked. Kathy closed her eyes. "What happened?" "I rather not talk about it..." "Is there anything we can do? Do you want us to stick around?" "No, I don't want to be a burden on you two." "Don't be ridiculous!" Ken said patting Kathy's back. I don't think either one of us will mind just sitting here." Ken smiled at Lauren, who smiled back. "Do you what you want..." Kathy muttered. "Are you tired Kathy?" Lauren asked. "I don't think so, but for some reason I just feel like falling asleep..." Lauren looked around. How about we go rest under that over there. Lauren pointed towards a tree that was near the runner's trail. "Alright..." Kathy said as she got up and followed Lauren to the tree. It became harder to keep her eyes open." "You just rest, Kathy. Ken and I will stay here while you sleep." Kathy lied down on the ground. Unable to keep her eyes open she fell asleep. * * * Everything around Kathy was white. "What is this?" "Thank god I finally got you to fall asleep!" Kathy turned around. "David?" She saw him in the same condition as Chris. "Listen Kathy. If Chris has already visited you then you must know that you have to get back with Ryan!" Kathy looked away from David. "You too? If you and Chris have been watching me then you must also know all of the things Ryan said." Kathy sighed. "You were right about humans." "No Kathy; I was wrong! You're right; I listened to everything you and Ryan said to each other, but there's more to it! Kathy, Chris told you we both can read your emotions, but he's wrong. I can't read emotions, Kathy, I feel them regardless of whether I want to or not." Kathy blushed slightly with David revealing that. "What does that have to do with anything?" "Grab my hand." David held out his paw. "But I can't touch it..." "Just reach for it." Kathy reached for David's paw. When the two came into contact the room changed. "Do you remember when you told Ryan you loved him?" Kathy looked down and saw her and Ryan lying on the floor. "Remember how you felt?" David placed his paw over Kathy. Kathy was filled with the familiar feeling she experienced that night. "I remember..." "Here's how Ryan felt..." Kathy's eyes shot open with the new feeling. "...Ryan's experienced loss as well, Kathy. For years he has purposely avoided having any close relationships. I guess he didn't want to experience loss again." "Well it worked out for him in the end... He no longer wants anything to do with me..." "You couldn't be more wrong Kathy..." David said as everything around them changed. "Recognize this?" Kathy looked around. "This was last night during our fight..." Kathy watched Ryan yell at her. Tears formed in her eyes. "Why do you have to make me watch this?" "You need to know the truth..." David said placing his paw on Kathy's head. Kathy gasped and fell to her knees. "That's what Ryan was feeling the entire time he was yelling at you." Tears formed in Kathy's eyes. "He just didn't want to lose someone again..." "Oh, Ryan..." Tears started pouring down her face as she looked at the ground. "I'm so sorry Ryan... If I hadn't insisted on going you wouldn't have gone through that. After what I said to you... I don't deserve your forgiveness..." "Kathy..." Kathy looked up at David and noticed he was almost completely faded away. "I've used up too much energy now; I can't stay for much longer..." Kathy stood up and tried to touch David, but with no luck. "Listen to me Kathy... You have to warn Ryan and the others about Doug. He's..." David's voice got softer. Kathy quickly moved her ear to his mouth. As David told Kathy her eyes went wide. Everything around her shattered." * * * Lauren sat in Ken's lap as the two watched the lake. "It's a beautiful sunset" Lauren said. "Sure, but you're better than a thousand sunsets." "Oh you charmer..." Lauren turned around and leaned into Ken. "Ryan!" Kathy shouted getting up causing Lauren to jump off of Ken in surprise. "What time is it?" Kathy asked. "It's 6:00, Kathy." "I was asleep for that long!? Oh god, I need to get to Ryan!" "Kathy, what's wrong?" Lauren shouted as Kathy ran further and further away. "No time to talk! Ryan might be in danger!" Lauren and Ken looked at each other before they dashed off. Kathy was running as fast as she could down the street. A white convertible suddenly dashed passed Kathy and screeched to a stop to front of her. "Need a ride?" Lauren asked with Ken in the passenger seat. Kathy smiled. When they arrived at Ryan's house Kathy kept ringing the doorbell. "I don't think he's home, Kathy." Ken said reaching into his pocket. "Here" Ken said handing Kathy a key. "Thank you, Ken!" Kathy said as she unlocked the door. "Find anything that might tell us where Ryan went." The three broke up around the house. "I think I found something!" Lauren shouted. Ken and Kathy gathered around her. "It seems to be blueprints for some building. The address is at the top." "Where's that?" Kathy asked. "Looks like it's somewhere in downtown Denver." "Take me there please!" Kathy said. "No problem Kathy" Lauren said. "I owe Ryan anyways." Lauren smiled at Ken. The three quickly got into Lauren's car. She turned on her GPS and entered the address. "One hour drive? I'll make it fifty minutes!" Lauren pressed hard on the gas as her car sped off. The sky grew dark as they drove down the highway. Soon the mountains completely hid the sun and the stars appeared. "Arriving at destination" The GPS signaled. "Look!" Kathy pointed at a truck parked near a building. "That's Eric's." Ken commented. Lauren slammed down on the brakes. The three got out of the car; Kathy running. As Kathy ran towards the truck she saw Regina. "Kathy!? What are you doing here?" "Where's Ryan?" Kathy asked panting. "Ryan's inside, Kathy. How did you find us?" "What the hell is going on out here!?" The back of the truck opened up revealing Eric. "Regina, what's going on out he-" Eric cut himself off when he noticed Kathy. "What are you doing here?" "Eric, you have to warn Ryan about Doug!" "What are you talking about?" "Doug is-" *Bang* All of their attention went to the audio system behind Eric. "We have a man down, Eric! I repeat, we have a man-" Olivia voice became distorted. "Well isn't that a shame?" A sarcastic voice spoke. Kathy's eyes went wide, knowing all too well whose voice that was. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to cut your communication. Have a good day." A wicked laughing echoed before cutting off abruptly. All of their eyes went wide. None of them knew who was shot and what was happening to the others. Kathy stared blankly at the system. The laughter continued to echo in her mind. (Not again... Not again!) ============================================================================================ Well I would say we're reaching the climax, huh? I can't believe it's been two months since my last chapter... I'm actually sad that this series is coming to an end, but I do have ideas for other stories. I wonder how many people I annoyed by constantly not revealing Doug's secret... Aren't I just evil not letting you know who was shot? Tell you what; I'll give you a short list of possible people who could have been shot: Ryan, Jade, Trace, Doug, Derek. If you're interested in guessing then send a private message saying who you think was shot. You're free to give reasoning, but I already have it planned so you can't change fate! Shortly before I release the final chapter I'll reveal the poll results (Not the answer! You have to wait to read for that!) I'll be accepting guesses until I post my final chapter. Now I have to gather my thoughts for the conclusion!
