Act one: Entering/Realization

Chapter one: Welcome to Virtual Reality

I sat in the chair quietly as I went over today's checklist of things for me to do before the days worth of class was finished. Looking at the time it was only 11:34. I smiled as I checked the last thing off the list and thrust my hands into the air slightly as I cheered. "heh told her I was going to finish before twelve" I said quietly and happy to prove my mom wrong about me being to slow to do something like that, but in truth I kind of was, I had to get up two hours early just so I could finish at the correct time.

Placing my hands on the keyboard I went to open up a new site. I looked at the timer For the new game I had just installed on my VR Holoport Headgear. The Site loaded and I sat there quietly "About thirty minutes till The game updates" I said excitedly as I pushed myself out of the chair took the cane by it to help myself up. I walked to the Kitchen and looked out the window the Blue sky dotted with wispy morning clouds as the sun was rising and revealing the ever busy city. The Hard-Light Advertisements of Products such as Coca-cola or Long John silvers. The Bullet trains making their routes to get people to where they wanted and the streets spotted with vehicles. Looking among the mess of busy people and ad I looked out to one of the buildings near the Play & Go's and saw the same timer from the site and the date above it *April 9 2030*

I continued to make my way to the kitchen and got myself a cup of coffee and sat down at the chair by the island in the room. It was a Small Apartment kitchen with a few dishes in the sink and a white fridge, along with some kitchen supplies. Sitting down I began wondering how the game was going to turn out. Placing my cup on the table I looked over at my watch and swiped my finger across the screen as a hardlight frame came up with a blue back drop. Going through some of the apps I clicked on one and it brought up today's news and read through it quietly as I read the news on the game and smiled slightly "hmm seems that the game has been on a lot of peoples minds today, wonder how the creator is taking the fame, though. . I wouldn't be surprised if it's a big indie team seeing as the game have only been out for like two weeks and has already amass nearly four billion players world wide, heh it's even reached Mars last week, the small colony seemed happy to finally get something new that they didn't have to wait three years for, looking through what what was new today I exited the app and the hard light frame disappeared with it, my watch going back to telling the time and temp. placing my hand back to the table my cup moved towards it and sighed. Ever since I was little around seven or six I had things move around me with out them being touched. I took a sip and my mind went back to the first time the strange power had made it's self known,

Flash back

It was back at the old house me and my mom use to live in. unlike the other kids in the Neighborhood I wasn't allowed to go outside during the day or play with the other kids as I was sickly pale do to my skin burning easily and my bones being frail . My mother had been trying her best to make live comfortable for me and even took a job from home to help be there for me, my father being in the military couldn't be around for me so my mother tried to do the best she could raising me. I normally did everything I could help around the house. It was night time when my secret came to live. I had sneaked outside to look at the full moon, there was suppose to be a meteor shower that night and I had been wanting to see it with my own eyes instead of watching from a computer screen. As I sat down on the patio I looked up at the bright moon as the first light came streaming through the sky. I was amazed and filled with a sense of excitement. That was when I heard a terrible hissing sound. I looked towards the fence and saw a black cat. It had been looking for food and when it saw me it had become scared. The cat was acting strangely. It continued to hiss before it jumped down and ran towards me. I watched scared before closing my eyes and raising my arms covering my face before I heard a thud and a wheezing sound. I slowly lowered my arms and saw the cat pinned to the tree in the yard scratching at the air as some unknown force held it there. I took that moment to get inside and when I did the cat fell to the ground and ran off. That was the first night that my gift had shown it's self. After that I began looking for something that matched the strange things happening to me and found the word Psychokinesis, the ability to move things with your mind, when I found out what it was being a kid I thought it was kind of cool to have a power but, it kind of made me worry what my mother might think if I showed her so. . I never did, it's been my little secrete since I was young.

End flash-back

I walked back to my room with my cup in hand and smiled quietly as I placed the mug on the table and looked out side as the sun was rising past the building that stood in front of ours, the windows darkening quickly, the sun light made my skin burn slightly, but once the room darkened again I sighed. I looked at the clock which read 11:45 am, I smiled and walked over to my bed and quietly laid there taking a deep breath as I picked up the VR helmet and placed it on my head, the system turned on as it sense the heat from my head. It asked for a username and password , I thought of the credentials and they began to fill out in the spaces needed. It began logging me in and slowly I felt body becoming heavy as I slowly began to slip into the VR Consciousness as people called it, any one that experienced this knew it was just the helmet connecting to your body and stopping your brain signals from reaching you body and being redirected to the headgear. Soon the heaviness seems to fade away and light surrounded me. Looking around I saw floating information bubbles floating through this blank white room, most people could customize these rooms but, I didn't have the money to do much more then have some white furniture which came with the headgear. Looking at bubbles I moved closer to them and reached out to touch one, seeing my avatar's pawed hand I remember where I was and smiled slightly. The bubble came towards my hand and the area around me darkened as some music played. The title popped up reading Gaia and Malum as the electronic music played, it sounded kind of old, as if from then early teens of the twenty first century. "Alright then Time to. ." I paused as the game wasn't playable at the moment, it was loading the data for the update. Looking at the timer it had a few more minutes. "Well. . th. . That's a bit early." I said and decided it might be best to just wait before trying to make a new character.

As I waited I opened up the update log, it had been updated since last night when I had first downloaded the game. Reading through it I had noticed that there were a few big things. The first was eighty new races and many new classes. I was at a loss as the game had basically quadrupled the options and there were series of Weapon, spell and skill updates, I have been reading up on how skills worked in this game and it seemed that skills were kind of like spells in the way they were activated, they used stamina while magic used energy. Reading on wards I learned that the game had skills for pretty much everything, and some skills countered others while some actually boosted the effect of others, I stopped reading as I my eyes ran over the words "Power Integrated System". It say that it scanned the brain and took keep aspects from the person and generated a power or powers to their character. It was one of the few games the used the Holoport headgear's scanning abilities, most games that did, were either Build your own Adventure games or Chat games where it scanned your brain to build an avatar based off of your real body. I question it for a second before figuring it to be something creator was just testing out, maybe mapping out Player killers from Rper, what ever the reason I bet the results from the scan might be cool. I finished reading the last of the update and the game seemed to be ready to play.

I pressed the button with my pawed hand and smiled quietly as the music slowly faded as the surrounding area around me became pitch black before words appeared before my eyes. " Logging in . . .Thank you , now please make your character"

Options appeared in front of me and Slowly I began to fill it out and smiled, once I finished with my name , race and class a text box opened up "*Preparing scan please wait. . . . Scan complete"* It said as my character sheet appeared in front of me.

Looking over it for a few seconds I blinked a bit confused as to how it created the skill list with out me having to even choose what I wanted. A button appeared to my left, the headgear noting my dominant hand , pressing it a stat sheet opened up with several different stats, and 150 stat points, slowly counting all the stats there were twenty one in all, to be honest it seemed a bit intimidating but it allowed for a good variety of customization. Slowly the points were allocated and a new holographic screen appeared in front of me. "\ **Thank you, please customize your In game avatar, before proceeding* *"

A base model of a Human with canine like ears and tail appeared, looking over the model for a few seconds I moved my left hand to the options tab and scrolled through them before coming to one that read 'copy headgear's avatar' clicking it the wolf disappeared and in front of me stood a Human model with Fox ears and a Puffy fox tail with raccoon tail rings, the models hands and feet pawed with silver fur going to the knees and elbows before breaking off into skin. Slowly scrolling through the long list of clothing I dressed the model in a gray shirt with long crimson sleeves and black cargo pants before changing it to a Grey linen shirt and black brown slacks. Going to cloaks I put a long black clock onto it before taking it off to give him a coal colored hooded scarf. Giving it;s pawed hands bandage like wraps along with it's pawed feet. Looking over it a few second I clicked the button to continue and it came up to a point of choosing weapons. A balance of four hundred points came up with a short description of what it was for, already knowing I continued to look for something that seemed like it would fit this character I was making . I slowly stopped on the Punching daggers and Trench knifes. Looking through the selection I picked a simple curved knuckle blade trench knife with a red streak running through the middle of the blade , the handles a dark grey and the blade a clean looking metal, either steel or silver. About one hundred fifty points left my balance and heading over to the guns selection I swiped through the list till I came up to steam powered, looking through it I stopped on a pair bronze pistols with vents on the sides and a small water tank on the barrel for the thumb to rest under. Looking it over as I touch the icon , a gun appeared and I was able to handle it. Turning around I saw the bronze covered gun had plates of copper , mainly surrounding the rubber grip and the trigger. I knew it would be a bit character breaking but then again, the game was a mash up of realities to form one larger one, mauling it over I decided to add it which took two hundred points leaving me with only with fifty, most of the options had been taken away from the list so I decided that it was time to move on.

Clicking the finish button the area around me faded from the dimly lit space, nothing as I was slowly moved closer to the model I had been working on before things faded. Feeling of weight returned to me as I was being loaded into the game, the feeling of not being able to breath dawned on me, a pressure in my chest began building up before I felt something form under my feet and slowly sound surrounded me. Opening my eyes I could see the rustic building, themed after the middle ages, the orange raising over head as the sun was setting. I opened my mouth and gasped as air entered my lungs, a few deep breaths and the pain in my chest was all but gone, looking around slowly I noticed other players logging in, where they appeared blue rings on the ground before their bodies seemed to materialized from thin air. Slowly taking a step forward I fell to the ground as I wasn't use to this new body that I was now in, like most vr games, each feeling was different but this. . this felt dangerously real. I felt the ground against my pawed hands, the silver fur on the back of my hands slowly moved as a wind swept by, and I could feel the wind itself, cold and a note to the waking morning in this area. Slowly pushing myself onto my feet, I felt the ground, it was cold on my paw pads and slightly damp as if it had rained recently. Looking at my hands, turning them over to see the teal colored paw pads , slowly my eyes went up my arms and to the clothing. It was always the weirdest feeling to log in for the first time, the games always. . Seemed to mimic real life to a extreme degree, but touch, smell, and taste were normally off, but for some reason in this game I. . I couldn't tell the difference, feeling the fur on my arms , it. . Felt real, the clothing felt a bit rough on the outside but soft on the inside, against the skin it was touching. "This is amazing" I said quietly as I looked at the buildings, and area around me. I was in a Plaza of some sort, the people here seemed to be players and some NPC's but you couldn't tell them apart from one another , aside from the players that chose outlandish clothing. Walking slowly around, taking in the sights, and that's when I caught a whiff of something . . . cooking. Looking around I began wondering where the smell was coming from, and that was when a small window to my left appeared with a list of skills before asking me to choose one or to close the window, looking around the window stayed in place. Looking at them I wondered what skill would help me in this situation and why it had even opened. With out knowing just the thought of finding the smell had opened my skills, the second thought caused the tracking skill to be high lighted with another box to open up [Tracking would help the most in finding something that can be related to the five senses, Survival could help if it was for tracking prey in a dense forested area] after reading the box it closed "alright . . I think that makes sense" I said quietly as I went to click tracking, it didn't do much but another box opened [to use a skill please think of the skill and what it's being used to do] moving my hand back away from the holographic sheet in front of me I began to think of the skills name, the skill activated and then I thought about the smell. Looking around the skill started to work as a yellow vapor like trail was created. Following it for some time I found my self in front of an inn not to far away from the plaza , the trail vanished as I realized it must be coming from in here, the skill deactivated and I slowly opened the doors and find the scent stronger in here. Looking around I slowly found that it was coming behind the bar where the inn keeper stood. the inn keep greeted me, he was a tall eleven Male, and looking at him a box appeared in front of me with details of the elf and not much was there as much had question marks next to it, the only thing I really knew was that he was an NPC. Which was pointed out in the text behind his name stating such. He looked at me for a second and went back to cleaning a glass " If not here to do business i'd like you to clear out, there's been more travelers about lately, I need space for paying customers " he said as I looked at him dumbfounded, he seemed so . . . normal it amazed me "uh. . .So, . . sorry I smelt something that caught my interest" I said nervously backing away from the counter and he huffed slightly "Well that might be the food my staff is making, again . . . for customers, now then are you are you going to buy something?" he asked as I shook my head leaving the inn and looked around, from afar it was hard to tell which people were Players and which were NPCs .

Taking in the area around me in and looked at the mixture of stone and wooden buildings, the town had it's rustic vibe to it but the people around breathed life into it, another wind blew through the town, the sun only hours away from setting and calling an end to the day in this area of the game. I walked around taking the area in before there was a loud ring and around me people stopped while others continued on as if they heard nothing. A mail icon appeared in front of me. As the message appeared I smiled reading "Stats assessments are now done, on your character page you will now find your Stats and skills , The game now begins have fun, stay logged for the first day event in a few hours, have fun ~The Creator" finishing the note it took me to my character sheet where a full detail of me, right now my status was fine. I swiped my hand over and my stats popped up

Looking them over, I understood most of it but there were some stat's I didn't understand but I guess I could always look through the help files if I needed to. I could hear people around cheering as the viewed their stats, I looked back at my stats and wasn't to happy with two, My strength seemed really low and what ever soul was, it wasn't high, but at leased my Endurance and Defensive abilities looked good but I was left scratching my head about Speed and Agility , maybe one had to deal with dodging and the other was movement or maybe agility was this game's dexterity. Thinking about it I shook my head and walked forward, more or less sight seeing and taking in the beauty of the game. I stopped in my tracks when I began wondering where I was going to be going once the shock and awe wore off, thinking it over for a few seconds I shrugged and looked at the tall building I was standing next to, the stone base matching the black stones used in the road, before tapering off into dark oak . The building a two story house with dark glass obscuring any one's vision if they tried looking in. just looking at the building made me wonder how the creators of the game went into so much detail to make everything in the area match up, the houses alone were very different from each other, the one beside it was outlined with stone and had a wooden roof . The windows were wooden boards that open up and were propped with a stick to keep it open. Shaking my head I sighed , why did I always find my self dawdling over the small things. Looking around I noticed there weren't a lot of people in this area of town, most of the players were probably at the plaza waiting for friends or maybe they went out of town to fight stuff, at least I thought there were things outside this town to fight, that's how other games like this one worked. Finding my self once again thinking about the details I was brought back to my surroundings as a tile fell from the building I was standing under. Walking away from the building I saw two players jumping building to building, well at least I think they are players, seeing them do that sparked an idea, if I was up there maybe I could get a better look of the town, the skill list window appeared, the acrobatics skill was highlighted before I looked at the walls, images flashed through my mind of how to pull off what I wanted to do, a yellow dot on the wall appeared. Thinking about the color for a second I wondered why it was yellow, doing so a color box appeared before me, looking at it for a second I read the box's name, which it was called skill color, the name being a bit blunt and unimaginative I looked over the colors and chose a light blue before the dot changed. I looked at the dot nervously, I knew what I wanted to do but pulling it off was something different, the images flashed through my head again before I swallowed nervously and took my first step forward and ran towards the wall and jumped, I kicked off the wall seeing a dot on the other wall and landed on it and pushed myself off before seeing a ledge on the other building highlight and landed on it gripping the sides of the window the ledge was under. I looked at the other wall and noticed there were a few dots, "wh. . Why ?" I asked myself before pushing off the ledge and gripped the dot that was on the roof of the building and slowly pulled myself up.

Once on the roof I looked back at the ground and laughed " okay that was kind of cool but. . . im pretty sure I looked like dork with how I executed it." Sitting up I looked at the two that had been on the rooftops before me, and they seemed to have a better hang of the Skill then I did. I decided to take this time to open up the user's manual, curious as to what the flashes were. A book materialized in my hands and I opened it up to the index looking over the content and found the chapter dedicated to skills and began reading as even now I wondered how they truly worked.

:Skills are Activated through thought, some skills allow the user to foresee how the skill will be played out, while others are executed with out effort, when using physical skills, the player will see highlighted areas as a path the skill has made to aid in the players action, though not all highlighted areas are correct, though the higher the level of the skill the more help the auto system will be, and will also help with pulling off the skill with out effort:

Looking it over a second time I slightly nodded thinking I got it. Getting up I looked at the building across from me as the skill activated, I back up slightly before running forward as things seemed to go on autopilot , my hands moved in front of me as I grabbed a pole attached to the building and swung my self up onto it and took a gargoyle like stance and laughed slightly, I didn't even have to think about it, it just happened "w . . .Wow that's . .That's so weird " I said quietly before looking up and jumped, I hadn't even realized what I did before I looked down, it felt like I was soaring, I must of jumped ten. . Fifteen feet into the air as I was slowly coming to a stop in my ascension, I was about five or six feet above the roof now , a bit worried about landing a new skill activated , I fell to the roof and my feet and hand touched the ground lightly as if I hadn't been falling. I sat there like that for a second wondering what had happened before standing up right and laughed happily "That was fucking awesome!", the feeling of being able to do this was unbelievable, I had just jumped so high and here I was not even a sign of pain to be noticed, I pulled hands up and looked them over, it was a weird feeling to have your body act on it's own as if on instinct, but it seemed as if I was the one doing it.

I looked out over the city, taking it all in, the area wasn't that big, maybe a mile or two in diameter but it was closely compact giving it a much larger feel to it, a dense forest around the town except to the east which had a path carved through it, some little buildings and a lumber mill. I was happy I had came up here , the view was breath taking. I watched the plaza from here noticed quite a bit of people were heading east in groups, but seeing as that was the wilds and probaly had thing in it I didn't want to go off and get ambushed by gods knows what's out there, and decided that it might be better to stay in the city and test out a few more skills. when the skill window opened up I noticed that each skill had a bar under it which was experience given to that skill for use, so far I had only some in acrobatics, free fall, and Tracking. Something about it just made me smile, it was always the little things that made games grand "hmm, wonder if I can pick pocket Npcs or even players" I said looking over the list.

There was a chime and a new message appeared in my inbox, opening it I saw it was an notice from the Creator~

: The Event will be starting sooner then planned, See you all in five minutes, can't wait for the game to begin: The Creator~

This guys seemed kind of impatient, but then again this must be a big moment for him, a indy game only get's this popular every so often. Looking off the building I stepped off and let the skill free fall activated, my body seeming to move on it's own. My right hand gripped a pole protruding from the wall before I swung off it doing a small flip in the air and landing on my feet, my arms above my head "Yeah. . . I don't think that's going to become dull anytime soon" I said looking back up at the building now towering above me. With that I began walking back toward the plaza, several of the players around here were teaming up with each other, most likely the people doing so were friends out in the real world. I sighed as I didn't have any friends out there, tending to spend most of my time on the net due to my illness.

Deciding that it might be for the best I took this small time frame to just relax and sit by the Plaza and watched the people near by. That was when a clock appeared in front of me, with three seconds remaining, tilting my head to the side I wondered what it was before people around me stopped, as the timer hit zero everything around me turned blue before my surroundings appeared , I found myself in the middle of a plains with several people around me and noticed they seemed just as confused as I did, a static sound came from the sky before a figure appeared on a holographic screen and waved before sound came through "Sup Players! I'd liked to personally Welcome you to my game, The Worlds I've made, Welcome to Gaia and Malum" The figure became clear, he was clearly using an avatar or something as the person speaking was a Humanoid looking Blue reptile with yellow marks on it's cheek, a small horn on it's nose and a yellow V on it's forehead. The being was wearing a Black jacket with a red furred hood. He smiled brightly showing off his Sharp teeth "And I'd Like to tell you that im glad to have all of you here with me. Now when I created this game, I did so to better the world, for reasons you will find out soon enough, but for now You call this world and the many others inside the system your home, You're free to do as you wish, kill who you want, take quests , start factions, groups and towns, there are an endless limits of things you may do in your new world." he said before I noticed people muttering things, I myself was confused what he was talking about but then I heard someone yell " Where the hell is the Log out button!" Other people began opening up their menus and came to the same realization. I was hesitant to open my own hub menu. I stared at the Figure in the sky screen, he seemed to stare back as if watched us, Watching me. Slowly I opened my Hub and noticed the button was none existent . The blue dragon smiled "Seems a majority of you have noticed the Log out Feature is gone, Now I don't want you to panic, this in your new world! Don't worry about your real world bodies, they will be safe, the game has already installed a feature into your headgears which allows it to transmit a distress signal to emergency help. As we speak I'm broad casting a message over all platforms, and you might be thinking that they will just try to take the headgear off to awake you but."He paused before he spoke again "That would be ill advised, the features that stop your gaming experience when such a thing has been disabled. If you're head gear is removed then, well your consciousness becomes stuck here while your body is left comatose."

The place was filled with whispering then some people yelling to cut the crap and stop lying. The dragon opened his mouth and took a deep breath "Now then let's get down to rules and the like! You may try to hack your way through the systems but know this, you will be hunt down and even if you're not caught you're branded as a Hacker. That's not good for you , well for right now it's not, but understand I'm not against your kind, in fact I encourage your need to do what it takes to survive and play this game, To establish yourself in your new world, But it makes you a bigger target. Here are some ways to gain power in this world, Killing other players will grant you five times the normal amount of Exp, But killing Five players in under three days will grant you a bonus of x10 the normal amount on everything that lasts for five days, but after the fifth kill a bounty is placed on your head worth x15 the Exp that is given after killing you, as well as Credits, which im sure by now you've figured is this game's currency. As for dying, you have ten lives, loose all ten and you're deleted from the game, in turn making sure you never wake up in the real world, and with each life you loose the Pain Protection Program is lowered. Let me just say, loosing five lives, any damage you take in the Game will have effects on you mentally in the real world, so be careful out there. As for Safe Zones, any and every city is protected from player killing, once you leave the safe zone you are open to being killed by Creatures and other players. Now then other then that, that's about it! Now then I will be watching you guys, Have Fun~. " the Figure said as the sky screen vanished. The area was left in silence before my surroundings were fading and the same blue surrounding was around me.I found myself back in the Plaza, the weight of what had just been said made me stand still, as others around me were in the same stupor. You could tell the players from the Npcs as every player around me was just standing there, or on the ground, some crying, others panics, while the NPCs looked around confused or went on about their day. From this moment on. . I had to play this game smart, or else. . . it might be the end of me.
