BACKGROUND - This is a story series I wrote way back in the late 90s / early 00s that I only ever released on Yiffy.Net. I thought I had lost all of my copies of it but I found one in an old archive. It's kind of rough. Feedback welcome!

The Tales of Sniper Fox
The year is 2218. Mankind, as it was known in the early 21st century, was no more. In 2023, two comets of unknown origins and consisting of material never categorized before or since passed within a few thousand kilometers of Earth on opposite sides. For years, it was thought that the animal-like transformations that the comets caused were a result of mutations brought on by the odd radiation coming from the them. It wasn't until decades later that scientists discovered that comets had merely activated previously dormant genes. Each and every person on Earth was transformed, taking upon the appearance of a animal that he or she was already genetically predisposed to become.
Shortly following transformation day (1 July 2019), Earth was plunged into a bloody world war. No longer were they a people divided by national, racial, and religious lines. They were now a people divided by species; hungrily seeking power, yet still learning the strengths and weaknesses of their new forms. War raged for nearly two decades, scorching the Earth and destroying much of the society that had been created over the past several millennia. After countless lives were lost, a global cease fire was declared and the nations eventually formed a global democratically-elected "New Earth" government.
180 years have passed since the advent of the New Earth government. Earth under the New Earth global government is largely peaceful and prosperous, putting their resources into commerce and scientific study now, rather than war. Beginning in 2089, the first planets in their solar system were terraformed and colonized, followed a dozen years later by the terraforming and colonization of planets in other systems. Over the next century, furkind (since they were clearly no longer 'mankind') spread throughout the known galaxy, colonizing inhabitable worlds several years journey from their homes on Earth.
It is now the year 2218. Warp technology, first tested forty years ago, has made the galaxy a much smaller place than it had seemed to previous generations. Systems previously years away could now be reached in a number of hours or days. This freedom tripled revenues from interstellar commerce in the first decade, then quadrupled it again the following decade. However, as with any new frontier, there were unscrupulous profit-takers: smugglers, con-artists, and pirates quickly adopted warp technology to aid in their endeavors as well.
This is the story of one such would-be pirate. While running a shipment of food and humanitarian aid from Dor'Ip 7 to the only inhabitable moon of Ceries 4, his small freighter came under attack from a mysterious pirate group commonly referred to as The Dark Society. While his ship quickly suffered incapacitating damage, he managed to destroy two of the eight attacking fighters. The shocked pirates couldn't believe that they had just lost two powerful ships to a seemingly docile cargo freighter. It was this, his navigation and gunnery skill, that kept the pirates from killing him when they looted and commandeered his ship.
Despite a policy of only taking prisoners in extreme circumstances, the remaining members of the lance that attacked his ship took the fox to meet their leader.
