They say time waits for no one, and in Daniels case this was true. He never expected how his life would turn out after leaving Earth, and to be honest he only regretted one part of it. Maria, Sandra, and Mathew. His only wish was that they had also survived with him, but as he began to study what a Quantum Vortex was, he began to understand Julyna and Iris's amazement seeing him surviving the trip through it at all, to the point that, as much as he didn't care to use the word, one might call it a miracle. Only because that would imply that there was some form of higher power watching over him.

He managed to start to new tradition between his mates, called an anniversary. Today was their eighth cycle together and he had a quiet time planned for them on a nearby planet that they were surveying, It also happened to be a time when Altair had taken some leave to be with them. Daniel was overly happy to have the three of them with him for the next few days. This is also when they sat him down to explain how a Derlenian relationship worked, and what was expected from each mate in the relationship. As they explained it from the beginning. "Rubi as much as I know you want things to be equal among us. Unfortunately it's not completely possible to maintain a relationship like ours that way. You are going to need to pick a first and a second on the female side, and a first on the male side." "Why is it not possible to have an equal part in the relationship?" He asked, as Altair spoke up. "The reason is, everyone has a favorite mate they spend more time with even if they don't mean too. By starting off with your favorite as your first they are granted certain privileges over the rest of your mates. In the case of a first female, she is the one you impregnate first, as it is her right to bare your first young to start your family, as well as making sure you can even make a family together in the case of mixed species. If you are wanting a large family, as most males do, then you impregnate your second after a cycle or two, so that the first offspring can learn who their first Memaw and Pawpaw are to create that mental bond between them. Likewise is done once the second set of offspring are born." Altair concluded. Daniel sat there deep in thought over how it was explained to him. In a lot of ways he understood why it was done to a better degree. He finally spoke again, " I take it, that it works the same way with same sex mates?" Julyna answered him, "Yes, even though they can't bare offspring, it was believed to be done that way to prevent confusion in a multi-partner relationships." Iris then spoke up, as she leaned on Daniel, "In our case, both you and Altair would be considered the Alphas of the relationship as a whole, as males are considered the heads of a family." Daniel turned to look at her, "Whereas you would be my first or Alpha, since Julyna is Altair's first?" She nodded happily and he could sense that there was something else that needed to happen, something important. "I take it that some manner of ceremony needs to happen to make, what I thought was already official, official?" He asked, and they all nodded to him, and began to explain how to perform it.

Since they were already naked at the shore of the small lake they were spending time at, Iris and Daniel walked up to each other. Daniel began his walk around Iris sniffing the air around her, the sniffing was done so you know your firsts scent in the case becoming blind. He would need to talk with the doctor to see if she could increase his oral factories in his nose later. He came around to the front of her and looked into your eyes. They kissed deeply before breaking it, as Daniel continued the ceremony for both Altair and Julyna, and the only change was he didn't bite Julyna, as that was reserved for the first only. He witnessed the ceremony continue between Iris and Altair, and then between Julyna and Iris, and then performed it between Altair and himself.

Daniel had to admit it made the relationship feel a bit awkward at the start, while trying to learn the uniqueness of each mates role. As much as he wanted to have an equal level of closeness to them, he also didn't want to cause any issues with how things have been established for far longer than he had ever lived. Though it wouldn't stop him from trying to add it into the relationship to make theirs unique in that aspect.

For the rest of the day they all relaxed in different activities, Iris enjoyed building a sand castle, as Julyna laid out in the Suns on the sandy shore of the lake, and Altair and himself swam out in the lake. They returned a bit later in better spirits than before, as both Iris and Altair felt like a weight had been lifted off of their shoulders. Daniel and Altair began to get the campfire going has both females prepared the food for cooking. As the food cooked Iris pulled out a small device and touched a button, as music, or what Daniel thought was music began to play. Iris came over and took Daniels hand, "It's been a long time since we danced, would you care to join me?" She asked with a smile. "I would love too." He replied as he got up and followed her to a spot and began to dance with her. Julyna and Altair watched and clapped along with the music until the food was ready.

It was late at night when Daniel awoke again to the sounds of the ambient wildlife outside the tent the four of them were sharing. He carefully got up and wondered outside to rekindle the fire. Once it was going good again he sat down and relaxed, while trying to see if he could expand his thoughts beyond a few feet. He remained relaxed as he continued to gently push himself. He pushed himself passed the campfire, until he was outside their camp. He stopped there for a minute as he sensed many things, what caught he attention was his mates sleeping. He didn't dig to deep into their minds, but instead just floated there with their surface thoughts. Worry. Happiness. Caring. Love. It filled him with joy as he had never experienced this level of love from others, outside of Maria. He continued to explore the area mentally and found a few amazing wonders with wildlife. He continued to press farther as he felt his mind take in more information about the area in general. Everything seemed fine until he reached a certain point, and then it was almost like his mind tore open, as it expanded in a blink of an eye. She finished in a somewhat bewildered tone and look, as Altair spoke up, "I've summoned Dr. Mortora, and she's on her way." Daniel rubbed his head as Iris gently licked the top of his head to help him relax. After a few relaxing moments he spoke, "We can't use this planet for colonies." Altair, and Julyna looked at him and asked why. "There are several native tribes on the far side of the planet." Julyna and Altair sat back and put their foreheads together, as they expanded their minds together and started searching the planet over. After about 30 minutes they came to, and looked back at Daniel. "It would seem you are right, it's a shame we'll have to forgo this planet then." Altair finished.

A few minutes later Mortora showed up and began to examine Daniel. She gave him a mild pain reliever and muscle relaxer for the intense headache and trembles he had, while also noting what Julyna said earlier, that he hadn't broken any of his mental restraints. "Is that a problem?" Daniel asked. "Well, I'm not sure to be honest. When Iris was brought in after her telepathic wave. Her restraints were completely gone, so I'd say chalk it up to luck that they didn't break. Other wise you'd get a visit from the GrandMaster, and he likely wouldn't be to happy with you." She said as she finished putting her gear away in her bag and getting up. "Oh one last thing Rubicant. If you want to expand you mind like this again, I would suggest having help from your mates." She added while pointing to Julyna, Iris, and Altair, as he nodded in return to her with what sounded more like an order than a suggestion, as she bid them farewell. Daniel reached out to her mentally and asked her if he could see her when they returned, to which she said that she would expect him.

Over the next two days Daniel was starting to understand how a Derlenian relationship worked. And though it might not appear equal to an outsider such as himself. It functioned overall with each individual receiving equal parts, as he continued to study theirs. The only real difference was the breeding aspect. Iris would be the one to bare his first younglings, if he was even capable of getting her pregnant as this was still unknown. Sadly he wouldn't know until they all left the ship and settled someplace nice. Something the both Maria and Sandra talked about around him as if trying to drop hints as to what they wanted from him.

"And just how many younglings does my Rubi want?" "At least a hundred." He said without skipping a beat, as a look of horror came over her, "So you want to have more females then." She said in a sad voice while she hung her head. He suddenly realized that in the attempt to joke it had backfired. He gently guided her eyes back up to his with his hand under her chin. "Look at me sweetie." Her eyes looked at him and he saw her worry. "Forgive me, I was attempting to make a joke, and it was done in poor taste." She looked at him and was about to explain something about females to him when he continued. "I know Derlenian females can only bare about eight younglings their entire life. I didn't realize that saying that would hurt you. No, I don't want or have a need for more females in my life, as you a Julyna are more than enough." Back on the shore Julyna and Altair were enjoying each other's company while sitting on the shore, as they began to discuss a few things, with Altair turning to Julyna. "So do you think he'll be able to handle being in our type of relationship?" She cuddled up closer to him, "Oh I'm sure he'll get use to it. It might seem awkward at first for him, but in a lot of ways things are still equal between us, which has always been a concern for him." She replied smiling up at him. They sat there watching Iris and Daniel play out in the lake, until Altair spoke up again. "I wonder why he's so concerned about everything being equal in the relationship." He said as a statement. Julyna softly sighed as she leaned in on Altair. "He works hard to make sure he isn't neglecting us, because he's terrified of us not feeling enough love from him. It likely stems from the time he was a youngling, and constantly being mistreated and abused." Altair wrapped his arms tighter around her as he sighed himself. "He's alone here in this galaxy, at least species wise." "He wants to become a Derlenian, did you know that?" She asked. Altair just looked at her stunned while shaking his head. "He mentioned it on our first shore leave together. When I found him sitting by the fire when he felt lost the first time being here." "He's not happy with who he is, I remember from when I had him encapsulated, but to become something else. I'm not even sure that's possible." "If it is then Dr. Graphra is the only one capable of performing it. On the plus side, the alliance wouldn't be able to use him as the progenitor afterwards, as the change would remove the protein from his body." At the end of their small vacation, Daniel paid a visit to medical and. To have a talk with Dr. Mortora. She greets him as he walks through the door. "Hello Rubicant." Compared to a Derlenian you have a sense of smell that is about a hundred times less." "I see." He paused briefly, "Is there a way to increase it to match a Derlenians sense of smell?" She walked over to the computer she had been using to store all of his information in and pulled up a comparison diagram, as he came over to view it. "Not without major reconstructive surgery. Your nose simply doesn't have the room to accommodate more oral factors." He sighed softly as a dejected look came over him. Mortora saw this and continued. "But I believe I have a different solution." He looked at her with some excitement as she took him over to a bio-bed and had him sit down as she brought out a device that was cone shaped and black in color. "I can temporarily increase the sensitivity of your current oral factors, and I can do so in stages." "Why stages?" "Well, let's just say that there are some smells that can make you sick to your stomach if I make to big an increase. By going slow it allows your brain to understand and comprehend what you're smelling." He nodded in understanding as she set the device to give a one percent increase.

Once she was finished, she had him smell a few things around the room as well as himself. He told her that he didn't notice any change on the things she had him sniff. So she tried a two percent increase this time. This time he noted a slightly stronger scent on the objects in question, but just so. She then tried a five percent increase, and this time things were stronger in scent, but they were confusing like a blend of scents with nothing clearly defined. She made a few adjustments on the device as well as increasing it to eight percent. This time sniffing around things were much clearer, but still needed some refinement. She adjusted the device once more and added a ten percent increase. Now he was experiencing a whole new realm scents and smells. She watched in amusement as he went around the room sniffing and learning about everything, and was taken back as he came up to her and started sniffing her. She didn't move as he explored her with his nose, but she did admit it was rather provocative and turning her on, especially since no male had ever done that with her. Just before he managed to finish with her Julyna and Altair walked into medical and saw what was happening. Julyna looked at Mortora as she explained what was happening. "I did when I first tested him when he came onboard the ship. Now I want to see if there is a difference with him being fully aroused and wanting to impregnate the both of you." Julyna looked at her, "Do you think there is a problem?" "I'm unsure at this point, and will keep you informed is something comes up." She finished as she walked away.

Mortora walked to the back of medical and placed Daniels sample in a small tube while placing it on a micro-transport pad and sent it off to her quarters. She then sat in her office reviewing some information as she heard Rubicant mating with Altair and then Julyna. The way he touched her earlier when he sniffed her, excited her in ways she didn't think was possible. Not to mention that she had been comparing his DNA with other species on the ship, including her own. What she was about to do went against medical code of conduct, but because of what she found she really needed a more definitive answer.
