#12 of Genetic Children

I have been doing a little EXTENSIVE research for the next location in the story, trying everything short of visiting said mysetery location that will be revealed in the next chapter....enjoy....

Korm awoke in a civilian hospital a few days later, to be told that he had been shot in the lower back. They had retrieved the bullet and placed it in a small glass jar full of formaldehyde, it was sitting serenely on the bedside table he could see the slight red tinge that still stained the pockmarks in the chunk of lead that had come out of his dream with him. He blinked, and squinted as he realised his eyes hurt. He was also thirsty but oddly, not hungry.

Â

He turned his head, not daring to roll over as he could still feel the dull throb of his wound. He assumed he was being given morphine thru the drip that was snaking over his arm and across the bed to the I.V. stand, he watched as the sluggish drops rolled down the tube to the needle as his hand and then bundled up to be regulated through the drip.

Â

He was contemplating trying to get out of bed when the door opened and Emu walked in, through the morphine haze, and the pain of his back he hallucinated for a few seconds, thinking that she was his ‘wife’ and that he was still in his dream. She walked over to the chair next to the bed, and sat down crossing one of he bare, white legs over the other. He black, no heel shoes were polished and her grey pants were expertly ironed. He slowly dragged his gaze up and saw that she was wearing a plain white shirt with a black sleeveless jacket, the rise of her breast stirred memories in his mind, and her cat amulet glinted under thefluorescent lights and he whispered.

Â

â€Tacita….†Emu cocked her head, and then it dawned on her what the word meant, it was a Latin name.

Â

â€Hey doesn’t that mean Silence? I wasn’t saying anything when I walked in.†Korm scraped his dry tongue over the desert that was his lower lip and blinked a few times to clear the image of his ‘wife’, once he could clearly see Emu he replied.

Â

â€Sorry Emu, I was coming out of a dream. Could you pass me a drink please?†Emu made a sound, shook her head and then reached into the bag on the floor. It looked like she had been here for a while before he had woke up.

Â

â€Redbull? I thought you would want some after you woke up, I’ve been living off the stuff since we brought you in here. What happened back in the Lab?†Korm didn’t see any sense in lying to her, but he could get away with it for a little while, just until he gathered his thoughts.

Â

â€I can’t remember much more than seeing you come into the Lab looking shocked, before that I just remember I had some really odd dreams.†Korm slowly rolled onto his back and winced at the pain that shot through him.

Â

â€You know that bullet stopped just short of puncturing your stomach, we cant talk about it here but I’m pretty sure the Director may want to ask you about it, we reviewed the surveillance tapes.†Korm sighed and shifted on the bed, he would have to explain it sooner or later.

Â

â€It’s ok Korm, you don’t have to talk about it now, infact I suggest that you…†Two people entered the room as Emu was talking, one was a short male doctor, dressed in a white coat, with a slicked over hair style and a set of silver rimmed glasses. He had a black pen in his shirt pocket, a stethoscope hung around his neck and the silver round end met his nametag on his chest, it read ‘Michael Brol, MD’ curiously it didn’t have the name of the hospital.

Â

The other person that followed the doctor in was a member of the Military Police, his hair was covered by a low beige cap, around his right leg was a low holster containing a sidearm, and the mans eyes drifted around the room, once he entered he took station next to the door. Korm noticed that the badge that is usually on the left shoulder that designates the country the officer is from was not there. Emu leaned back in her chair, crossed her arms and spoke to the doctor.

Â

â€He’s fine, I’ve been here since we brought him in he hasn’t complained yet.†Korm looked at Emu puzzled, but decided not to say anything he would ask after they left.

Â

â€I would still like to examine wound. Maybe re-dress.†The doctor spoke in a heavily accented drawls Korm couldn’t place the accent.

Â

â€Ok I will assist you Mike.†Emu stood up, and told Korm to roll over.

Â

They began by decreasing his morphine so they could check the sensitivity of the wound and make sure there wasn’t any nerve damage, after a few minutes of poking around the bandages, the doctor pulled them off slowly. Emu pulled a portable cabinet over and opened the second draw to get some bandages.

Â

The doctor and Emu re-dressed his wound, and then the doctor’s beeper went off.

Â

â€Emu finish this and sedate him, I will take the guard with me.†Then he leaned closer to her and whispered.

Â

â€Don’t discuss his dreams here.â€Â Then he dropped his security card onto the bed next to Korm, on the opposite side to the guard, and left.

Â

Korm shifted his hand and pushed the card over to his pillow and then tucked it into the pillow case while Emu finished dressing his wound. And then he was sedated.
