#4 of A Dog in Blue

June 10th, 1969

42nd Precinct

Chief Hickling glared at Travis from across his desk. Travis wasn't told what this was about, only that Chief Hickling was riled up about something and wanted to talk to him. He was sure had it something to do with the zoo. If so, Travis would be fine, his actions were more than justified. Cops, human or not, deserved respect. The Chief would totally understand once he got the full story.

"Okay," The Chief began, "I don't know how to put this, so I'm just going to say this bluntly. Are you a fag?"

Travis froze. How did the Chief know about that? He knew way better than to confess to something like that. No it was better to lie. The "that must have been another German Shepherd" lie worked every time. The German Shepherd laughed and shook his head.

"Where would you get an idea like that sir?" Travis replied, "Of course I'm not a fag."

The human nodded and leaned back in his chair.

"Good," He began, "I didn't want there to be a conflict of interest."

Travis blinked.

"Conflict of interest?" Travis asked, "In the McNeil case?"

"No," Chief Hickling replied, "That isn't your top priority anymore."

Inwardly, Travis jumped for joy. Now the only way for Nathan to get into trouble would be a huge amount of bad luck. He couldn't show that though. Travis growled and bared his teeth, making the Chief pull back ever so slightly. He may have been a strong and imposing man, be he knew first hand how dangerous an angry Dog like Travis could be. The human's hand reached nervously for the phone on his desk. Travis dialed his fake anger back, the last thing he wanted was to be dragged out of this office in cuffs and a muzzle.

"You said if I solved that case I keep the promotion," Travis growled, "So what, I'm going back to being a beat cop?"

"Not at all," The Chief began, "There's something happening in the city. Something I need good cops like you to help stop."

Travis sighed and nodded. Chief Hickling moved his hand away from the phone and put it back on his desk.

"What is it then?" Travis asked, "What's happening?"

"We've heard rumors that the gays, are well, going to do what the blacks have been doing these past couple of years," Chief Hickling explained, "We don't want that to happen."

Travis gave an authentic gasp. He was just at the bar last night. How was it that he didn't overhear, or was flat out told, something like this? The Chief nodded and leaned forward in his chair.

"We know the human ones plan to do this," Chief Hickling continued, "But we have no idea what the Furs are planning."

Travis's eyes went wide. The Chief wanted him to sell out his own community. It was bad enough when he was forced to raid a gay bar, but this was something much worse.

"It's going to be difficult," Chief Hickling began, "But you and James are going to investigate the gay Fur community. You see anything, you hear anything, you tell me immediately so we can bust them up."

This just kept getting worse. If James was there with him lying about whatever plans the community had would have been impossible. All Travis could do was hope that he would have a chance to warn them before this happened.

"Okay sir," Travis began, "When do I start?"

"As soon as possible," The Human stood up, "You and James will be rewarded for this, I guarantee that.."

Had Travis known that impossible situations like this would become commonplace, he would have never became a cop in the first place. The Nathan situation was bad, but this was 100 times worse. Police raids on a gay bar were no laughing matter and people were always hurt. Travis acted grateful and flashed the Chief a smile.

"We'll get them sir," Travis began, "Before they cause any trouble."

"Good," Chief Hickling returned the smile, "Of course I will provide any help or resources you require. Do you have any questions?"

"Is James back at work yet?" Travis asked, "I was hoping to set up a plan of attack with him."

"Still sick," Chief Hickling began, "He should be in tomorrow."

Travis got up from his chair and put his jacket back on.

"I'm going to lunch," Travis began, "I'll start looking for potential threats this afternoon."

Chief Hickling smirked.

"That's why you get positions like this," The human replied, "You are a real go getter Travis."

Travis bit back a sigh and left the Chief's office. Since his promotion, no one except James or the Chief really talked to him. The German Shepherd supposed that they were all jealous. Today it didn't really bother him. All he wanted to do was run to his car and punch the living hell out of it. He managed to contain his anger and walked into the garage to his personal car. He had a very good idea where to go.

Victor may not have been much of a rebel, but he had lots of friends who were. Lots of friends with very big mouths. If Travis could find out where and when the gay community was going to start trouble, the German Shepherd could get a warning out. He couldn't stop it, but he could make it harder for the cops to really put forth a strong response.

He started his car and drove out. Victor would be on campus now and was hopefully between classes. The German Shepherd had only been into the Black Lab's apartment once, and it had been one of the best nights of his life. He felt a pang of sadness. Victor hadn't talked to him since the zoo. There was no doubt in Travis's mind that Victor was jealous, and when Victor got jealous, Victor lashed out. Hopefully it wouldn't be an issue. Travis needed Victor's help desperately.

NYU Student Apartments

Travis walked through the hallway of the student apartments. He was in his suit, which made all of the Furs walking to and from their apartments stop and stare. Victor's apartment was at the end of the hall and had a sock on the door. Travis growled and knocked firmly.

"This is Travis," He began, "Open up."

Silence. The German Shepherd waited for a minute and then knocked again, more insistently this time.

"NYPD." He said louder, "Open the door."

After a few moments, a large Polar Bear with a smug look on his face opened the door. He was shirtless and reeked of sex. Sex with a male. Sex with Victor. Travis wrinkled his nose and did his best to bite back the jealousy. He knew that he and the Labrador didn't have a relationship in the traditional sense, but there was still a sense of possession, one shared by both parties. The Polar Bear looked him up and down and chuckled.

"You must be Travis," The Polar Bear began with a cool, deep voice, "Victor's told me all about you."

Travis crossed his arms.

"May I come in?" The German Shepherd asked, "This is very important."

The Polar Bear stood aside and held the door open wider. Travis walked in, his eyes widening and nostrils flaring at the strong stench of sex inside the apartment. The Bear smirked and slammed the door, taking the Dog's attention off of the smell.

"That's what happens when Victor has his heart broken," The Bear sighed melodramatically and leaned against the door, "And you did break his heart Travis. In fact, he actually cried."

The Bear shrugged.

"For fifteen minutes before I gave his eyes another reason to water," He continued with a chuckle, "He's in the bath right now, and I really don't think he wants to see you."

Travis glared at the Bear and clenched his fist. He didn't like this new guy at all. Victor had always had a terrible taste in men. Travis didn't know why, but the Labrador was always pining after the assholes. The younger Dog knew this, of course, and actually looked for it when cruising for a lay. In his mind, the assholes were the best in bed. Travis cleared his throat.

"This is important business," Travis started for the bathroom door, "I absolutely have to talk to him."

The Bear walked across the living room in a few effortless strides and held the bathroom door closed, his bulky body inches from Travis's nose.

"Not so fast," The Bear's smirk changed into a toothy smile, "It's shoddy police work not to question all your potential witnesses."

The Polar Bear reached his free paw down to grope the front of Travis's pants.

"What do you say puppy?" The Bear began, "I've always wanted to fuck a cop."

"I say back the fuck up," Travis replied, "And let me take care of my business before I arrest you."

The Bear's smile vanished and he backed away. Travis opened the door to the bathroom and stepped inside.

"Don't worry puppy," The Polar Bear replied as Travis closed the door, "I'll get that ass of yours the next time I see it at the Plaza. You can count on that."

Travis growled as he shut the door. Meanwhile, Victor didn't show a reaction and continued to nonchalantly wash his legs in the soapy bathwater. He chuckled and pulled the shower curtain to the side.

"I see you met Anthony," Victor sighed wistfully, "Isn't he great?"

Travis scoffed.

"No," The German Shepherd replied, "He's fucking terrible."

"You're just saying that because you're jealous," Victor huffed, "It's okay. You can admit it."

"Grow up," Travis rolled his eyes, "I'm here for a reason. I need information, or Furs, Furs we both know and love, could get hurt, bad."

Victor sat up in the tub and turned to look at the German Shepherd.

"I'm listening," The Labrador replied, "Ask away."

"Okay," Travis sighed and rubbed his eyes, "Do you know anything about a big gay protest? One in the Fur community?"

Victor scoffed.

"You mean you don't?" Victor replied, "I know I didn't tell you, but I was sure you figured it out. Why do you ask?"

Travis took a deep breath.

"Well," The German Shepherd sighed, "I got tasked with looking into it. The cops aren't going to let it happen. They want to crush it."

Travis sat down on the edge of the tub with his head in his paws.

"I know I can't stop it from happening," Travis continued, "But maybe I can give the cops the wrong date. Maybe I can make the response lesser than it would be."

Victor's face softened and he reached up to rub over Travis's back. His paw moved slow and pressed hard over the older Dog's muscles, just the way he liked it.

"You can't stop it," Victor began, "But go to the Plaza and talk to Lionel. He's in charge. Let him know what's going on, and maybe he can start feeding false information."

Victor kissed the German Shepherd's cheek.

"It's going to be okay," Victor continued, "A police response is fine. They want people to see how brutally they treat us. Maybe then things will get better."

"There's got to be a better way," Travis replied, "But thank you. I'll do what I can."

Travis got up from the side of the tub with a sigh. Victor whined as the German Shepherd started to walk away. After a moment's paused, he lunged, nearly falling out of the tub, and grasped Travis's paw.

"No," Victor began, "Wait."

Travis looked back at the Labrador and shook his paw free of the black-furred canine's grip. He didn't want to hear this right now, especially after he met his replacement.

"Are we okay?" Victor asked, "I want to be friends and all. I just need a little time to get you out of my system."

"Sure," Travis replied emotionlessly, "Whatever you need."

Victor blushed.

"Maybe a kiss before you go?" He asked, "Anthony is always a better lover when he's jealous."

Travis frowned and walked to the door. He opened it and stepped back into the living room.

"You know Victor," Travis nearly snarled out the words, "You're just as bad as he is."

Travis slammed the door and stormed across Victor's small apartment. He could hear the Labrador's panicked whines as he attempted to get out of the tub. Travis snorted and elbowed his way past the stoic Polar Bear in front of the exit. If Victor was truly sorry, he could apologize later. After all, it wasn't like the Labrador didn't know where he lived.

Travis's Apartment

Travis walked into his apartment with a sigh. Nathan was cleaning his countertop, totally naked. The German Shepherd's eyes went wide and his tail started to wag. Now this was something he could get used to coming home to. Nathan blushed and put the wet rag he was using on the rim of the sink as the older male approached him with a lusty look in his eyes.

"Sorry," Nathan nervously played with his head fur, "After last afternoon."

Nathan blushed even harder.

"And the three times we made love after the zoo," Nathan continued, "I figured I'd do this. Is it okay?"

Travis pulled Nathan into a gentle embrace and kissed the top of the Cattle Dog's head.

"Of course," Travis chuckled, "I just thought the kids were going to be here."

"They're with Amanda," Nathan replied, "The parents of one of her school friends really like the triplets. They've been such a help."

Nathan looked up into Travis's eyes and blushed. His paw moved up to the German Shepherd's tie and played with it. The younger Dog let out a quiet giggle as Travis slid his paws lower and held on to Nathan's hips.

"I missed you," Nathan began, "I'm happy you're back, but I thought you were at work till five. Shouldn't you have a new case by now?"

"Well I do," Travis sighed and looked down at the carpet, "I uh, I need your help with it."

Nathan's tail wagged furiously. He jumped out of Travis's arms in excitement. Even though the German Shepherd was having a bad day so far, he couldn't help but smile.

"That would be awesome!" Nathan replied, "Do I get to go undercover and catch bad guys?"

"Kind of," Travis chuckled, "We're going to the Crimson Plaza."

Nathan's tail and ears immediately drooped and a quiet whine escaped his lips.

"I can't go to a gay bar," Nathan whined, "What if someone tries to you know, buy me again? What if some cop gives me a hard time and takes me in?"

Travis walked up and embraced the Cattle Dog again. Nathan started to tremble and nuzzled into Travis's suit.

"No one will," Travis began, "If anyone, cop or otherwise, gives you a hard time, you find me, I'll take care of you Nathan. I promise."

Nathan whined and pulled away from the German Shepherd's suit.

"Can't you take this thing off?" The Dog asked, "It should have been off a long time ago."

The German Shepherd nodded and took off his suit, leaving the various layers in a pile on the living room floor. He could easily do this by himself if Nathan didn't go with him, but Travis wanted to have emotional support. He was scared of what could happen and that whatever he did to try and stop these things from happening wouldn't be enough. Once Travis was naked Nathan embraced him.

"Can we go to the bedroom?" Nathan asked, "I want to you to tell me what you need me to do."

Nathan took a deep breath.

"I don't want to go," Nathan continued, "But I'll go for the right reason."

Travis picked Nathan up in his arms and carried him into bed. The Cattle Dog blushed and nuzzled into the German Shepherd's shoulder, giving it soft kisses and nibbles as Travis laid him down. The older Dog smirked, got on top of Nathan, and locked lips with the other Dog. He needed to get down to business, but he had wanted a kiss like this all day. The two canines moaned and ground against each other as they made out, their paws moving over every inch of furred flesh they could reach.

"Mmm," Travis pulled back, "Now let's talk business."

Nathan chuckled and traced a lazy pattern with his paw on the German Shepherd;s chest.

"A few more moments of that and we would have got down to it," Nathan replied, "But yeah, you'd better tell me what's going on,"

Travis sighed.

"The cops think that the gays in the Fur community are going to have a protest," Travis began, "They want me to get more details."

"We are," Nathan replied, "I used to go to the meetings before I met you. It's going to change everything."

"Well regardless," The German Shepherd sighed, "I need to warn them."

"The cops?" Nathan asked, "Or the guys at the Plaza?"

Travis growled.

"I'm done putting the "boys in blue" over my own people," Travis began, "I'm going to keep this from happening. I do not want to watch the cops raid my favorite bar. Fuck, I don't want to raid my favorite bar.""

"Is that what this would come down to?" Nathan asked, 'Raids? We have the constitution on our side. They can't arrest us for speaking our minds."

"Sure," Travis scoffed, "Tell that to the politicians, businessmen, and other assorted rich assholes. They don't give a fuck about us. To them gays aren't even people. Furs aren't people. Guess what Nathan, we're both. How fucked do you think we're going to be?"

Nathan whined and fell silent.

"If this goes bad," Travis paused and composed himself, "If this goes bad. Lots of people we know are going to get hurt. I personally know cops who look forward to raids. They will try to kill our kind."

"Okay Travis," Nathan moved out from underneath the German Shepherd, "We should go then."

He got out of the bed and rubbed his arm.

"I'm going to get dressed okay," Nathan continued, "My clothes are in the living room, so just uh, meet me out there."

Travis sighed and sat up in the bed as Nathan walked out. He probably laid it on a little thick, but there was nothing else he could have done. How else would he express the importance of what he was about to do. Nathan was a great guy, but he was young, and when things like raids and protests happen, the young are the biggest targets. Watching your leader get beaten to the ground is hard to watch, but watching someone like Nathan get that treatment is even worse. The cops knew that and targeted people like Nathan. They targeted them and broke them as a way to keep the community in check.

"Fuck," He muttered as he got off the bed, "Fuck the world."

Travis changed into a white tee-shirt and a pair of jeans. If this were any other night, he would have groomed himself, but today, he was on a mission. Nathan stood next to the door, his head hung and ears drooped.

"Look I'm sorry," Travis began, "I didn't mean to get so worked up."

Nathan looked up and rubbed his arm.

"I understand," Nathan sighed, "I'm not mad at you."

Travis chuckled and walked up to the Cattle Dog. His paws moved down to Nathan's hips and applied the slightest amount of force.

"That's not what I'm worried about," Travis replied, "All I care about is that you are okay."

"I am," Nathan began, "I just don't understand why I need to go with you."

Travis sighed and looked down.

"Because I'm scared," Travis replied, "And having you there will make it easier to be brave."

Nathan smiled and kissed the German Shepherd softly.

"Okay then," The Australian Cattle Dog said as he pulled away from the kiss, "Let's go save the day."

Later that afternoon

The Crimson Plaza

Travis and Nathan walked into the mostly empty bar as nonchalantly as possible. This bar was always dead during the weekdays, only the older gay males came here. Lionel was standing dutifully behind the bar as he always did. Travis didn't think the Tiger had a life outside of the Plaza.

"Just go and mingle," Travis began, "Try and get some information while I warn Lionel."

Nathan nodded and whined as he looked around. He must have recognized some of these men.

"Don't worry," Travis put a paw on Nathan's shoulder, "Just come and get me if something happens."

Travis walked up to the bar and sat down in his usual seat. Lionel smirked and leaned forward, resting his head on his paws and swishing his tail behind him

"Well well well," Lionel began, "I don't ever see you here this time of day. Aren't you worried one of your cop buddies will see you?"

Lionel pointed at a mean looking Fox in the corner.

"Like him," Lionel continued, "I know he's not gay."

Travis whined.

"He's probably the reason I have to be here in the first place," Travis leaned in, "I have to warn you."

Lionel straightened up and nodded. He started to grab liquor and mixers and fixed the Dog a strange cocktail. Travis sighed. He hated mixed drinks.

"I think I can make one like that," Lionel slid the green cocktail over, "Give that a try."

Travis wrinkled his nose, but took a hefty sip of the cocktail. It was minty and weird. He definitely wasn't having one of these ever again.

"This is important," Travis whispered urgently, "The cops know what you're planning. You've got to be more careful."

Lionel shrugged.

"No we don't," Lionel replied, "We want this to be loud. Why do you think we let that Fox into our meetings?"

The Tiger started to clean a glass.

"If the cops treat us badly, which they will," Lionel continued, "The public will be sympathetic. They won't be able to look away anymore."

"The cops will probably kill someone," Travis whined, "People will get hurt. You can't honestly believe that this is going to have a happy ending."

"It won't," The bartender said bluntly, "At least not at first. Everyone knows what they signed up for."

"The response will be just as big if you mislead them," The German Shepherd began, "If they know exactly when this is happening, they won't give you the chance to demonstrate. They'll just raid here the night before."

Travis slid his drink to the side.

"It would just be more of the same," Travis continued, "And all these people would have risked it all for nothing."

Lionel froze.

"Oh my god you're right," Lionel whimpered, "We've still got time. Next meeting I will start with the disinformation. I know who I can trust."

Travis nodded.

"Good," The German Shepherd replied, "I know I can't stop you, but I can make the whole thing a little safer."

"Okay," Lionel sighed. "Thank you. You should get out of here. I don't want him to think you helped me."

Travis looked over the bar. Nathan was pinned against the wall by a large Wolf. The German Shepherd growled and stood up from the bar. He was hoping this wouldn't happen.

"How much for the drink?" Travis asked, "I need to intervene."

Lionel scoffed.

"Not with Nathan," Lionel chuckled, "He can handle himself."

Lionel shook his head.

"You don't have to pay," The bartender continued, "Thank you for the help. Thank you for all you've done.""

Travis nodded and walked over to the Australian Cattle Dog. He made eye contact with the Fox en route, who shot him a wink and an evil grin. Travis shuddered. Officer Steele was the Fur version of James. If he was in on this it would mean violence was definitely on the table. Nathan let out a quiet, distressed whimper as Travis got closer. The Wolf had his paws down Nathan's pants and was kissing him hungrily on the neck. Travis detected the hot sting of jealousy as he roughly tapped the Wolf on the back.

"Buzz off buddy," Travis began, "We've got to head back home."

The Wolf smirked and kept kissing the smaller male.

"He wants to stay with me tonight," The bigger canine began, "He's wanted me for a while now. Don't worry. I'm not paying for it. Nathan he told me he was done with that life."

Nathan whimpered.

"I'm sorry Albert," Nathan pulled back, "I-I'm kind of with Travis now. I tried to tell you, but you kinda jumped on me."

Albert whined.

"Look Albert," Travis pat the Wolf on the back, "My boyfriend is off limits."

Nathan wagged.

"Boyfriend?" Nathan asked, "For real?"

"Yes," Travis chuckled, "We can talk about it if you want."

"Okay," Nathan blushed, "Let's go and talk about it."

Travis hung his head as he walked out of the bar with Nathan in tow. Hopefully Officer Steele didn't put two and two together. If he did, Travis wouldn't hear the end of it when he went back to the office.

The Next Day

James still wasn't at work, which meant that Travis had the pair's shared office to himself. Things were going well today. It didn't take much at all to convince Nathan to become his boyfriend. It seemed to be the only logical move, and the best way to stay involved in the fascinating Cattle Dog's life. Officer Steele knocked, and in one fell swoop, ruined the German Shepherd's mood.

"So I saw you at the Plaza," The Fox chuckled and sat down, "I'm happy you scoped it out. It'll come in handy."

Travis chuckled and cracked a smile.

"Well I just wanted to be helpful," Travis replied, "I like to think I can do a lot of good for the whole situation."

The Fox smirked.

"I wouldn't worry about that," He began, "We're raiding soon. Maybe tomorrow."

Travis bit back a whine and looked as calm as possible.

"We've done raids before," Travis replied, "I'm not worried about a couple of fags."

"It'll be more than a couple," Officer Steele began, "And they will be organized and angry. They might actually fight this time."

Officer Steele's smirk turned into a sinister grin.

"It means we can respond even more aggressively," The Fox continued, "We may be able to rid our species of the cancer that has plagued it for far too long. Maybe then people will treat us like we deserved to be."

Homophobia ran rampant in the Fur community. Many of members of the community blamed the gay Furs for the way humans treated them. This was of course nonsense, but was a pervasive belief nonetheless.

"Maybe," Travis nodded, "We'll just have to see."

The Fox nodded and leaned back, clearly satisfied with the Dog's answer. They shared an uncomfortable silence, and for a few moments, Travis was sure this terrible Fur would leave. Instead, he leaned forward with an evil grin on his face.

"So, I saw you brought Nathan in with you," The Fox smirked, "Mind telling me what that was about."

Travis froze and picked up a pencil. If he fiddled with that, he should be able to keep a straight face while he made something up.

"Oh," Travis chuckled, "I busted him a while ago. He owed me a favor and I used it. I just wanted to look convincing. Not like a cop."

"That's smart," Officer Steele replied, "Did you, you know, sample that little slut?"

The Fox chuckled. Travis frowned and strengthened his grip on the pencil

"It's not gay if you force them," The Fox continued, "Besides that little slut likes it."

Officer Steele murred.

"This one time I got him in the alleyway and fucked that little muzzle and ass of his for hours," The Cop chuckled, "Can you blame me? It's stressful investigating these clubs. Besides, I think I more than established a good cover for myself."

Travis snarled and snapped the pencil in half. One of the broken edges dug into the pad of his paw hard enough to draw blood. If the Fox said one more word about Nathan, Travis would rip his throat clean out. Officer Steele gasped and sat back.

"You okay there?" He asked, "Did I hit a nerve?"

Travis grabbed some Kleenex from his desk and cleaned his paw up.

"I think we disagree on what makes someone gay," Travis began, "If I ever hear anything like that out of your mouth again, I'm getting Internal Affairs involved."

Officer Steele audibly gulped.

"Well," Travis continued, "Is that clear?"

"Crystal," The Fox cleared his throat, "I'm going to go tell the Chief my latest information. Uh, thanks for the talk."

Travis nodded.

"That's a good idea," The German Shepherd replied, "It's probably best for you not to come in here for a while."

"I understand," Officer Steele stood up and backed out of the office, "I'll keep my distance."

"Good," Travis nodded, "Now get out."

Officer Steele whimpered and practically ran out the door. Anthony Steele may have been a nasty rule breaker, but he was terrified of being caught. Travis breathed a sigh of relief once the other male had left and slumped forward onto his desk. He needed to get a message to Lionel somehow. The phone one his desk rang while he was deep in thought. Shakily, he reached forward and answered it.

"This is Officer," Travis swore under his breath, "I mean Detective Parker."

"This is the Chief, Travis," Chief Hickling began, "You need to get home and get some rest. You're going to have a late night tomorrow."

"Late night sir?" Travis asked, "What for?"

"We're going to raid the Crimson Plaza at 11 PM," Chief Hickling replied, "I need you at your best. Is that clear?"

Travis stared at the door and trembled in fear and rage.

"Yes sir," He replied, "Crystal."
