#2 of Curious Cases LAPD

An entire story that popped into my head when I looked at one vaguely-related, really old Far Side cartoon.

It all started when an Orange cat by the name of Tamara Whiskerton called the station. She said that it was urgent, and she needed us over there right away. When we got there, she showed us a letter, typed in 12-point Comic Sans, that read "Arf arf if you want to not end up as dog food, move out of our neighborhood quickly." There was no signature, because of course there wasn't, and the font was specifically chosen to leave us absolutely no clues from who likes what font (people tell other people that on social media now), because nobody likes Comic Sans. It was also clearly chosen to look innocuous until read, rather than skimmed, due to the non-threatening blandness of Comic Sans.

However, there was one detail that the culprit left behind: A bone labeled "Property of Canis Wilson". I was immediately sent over to question Canis Wilson. I asked him about any prior incidents between him and her, and he said that he bit her when she tried to steal his bone. I went back to her, and she said that he bit her because she called him out on pissing in her mailbox. The rest of the investigators believed her story and arrested Canis, and they said it was partially because she "acted innocent", referring to her pleasant demeanor. However, it is worth noting that this "pleasant demeanor" was very reminiscent of Dawn Bellwether's, complete with the growing suspicion that something sinister was going on inside her head.

I went over to the station, and further questioned Canis. I asked him if there was any reason that anybody would try to frame him. He said that his story "seemed to him" to be a motive for Tamara to frame him. Even if her side of the story was true, that would still mean there's a motive. After that, you need evidence, and you need to prove that it's in line with the suspect's personality. I asked Tamara if she had any ex-boyfriends or ex-girlfriends. She talked about how she had a boyfriend, a Doberman named Horace, that she left when she found out she was bi, for a long-distance relationship going on at the time, with a Bunny named Lana.

I questioned Horace first. He told a story that lined up perfectly with newspaper headlines from the time, which I checked, also checking to see if any had been debunked. None have. He told the story of how he broke up with her because she was demanding he bend over backwards for her. He truly loved her, and thought that she was still somehow a good person, but couldn't take any more, and broke up with her. His view of her changed, however, when she accused him of rape. The charges made it to court, but all that you need to know is that she planted false evidence, she had a history of having sex with Horace with only the most dubious of consent, and Horace was found not guilty. However, he was kicked out of his college Football team, and had to change his name and move to a different city and even a different college to start a new life.

Then, I went to Lana. She said that she was best friends with Tamara for a while, but then broke contact with her for a while after she noticed that Tamara was using lies and blackmail to get her way every time. She was convinced that Tamara changed, however, and started going out with her. However, she did acknowledge that Tamara was very, very demanding. I asked her if she ever used threats to stop Lana from disobeying. Lana said that she always obeyed, because this was her first relationship, and she wanted more than anything to stay in it. She hadn't experienced a healthy relationship yet. I called Horace, asked him about it, and, as it turns out, that was how he was when he was going out with Tamara.

I brought the evidence to the other investigators, but they only pointed to the fact that they found the bone with Canis's fingerprints on it. I asked them, however, to check for any other fingerprints, since they had only looked for those of their suspect, and not anyone else's fingerprints, just to be safe. They found Tamara's fingerprints. They got a search warrant, and used it to search Tamara's home. They found that she had been taunting Canis on Facebook, and threatened to frame him for murder if he didn't delete the messages. She screencapped them, though, and when called out on it, admitted that it was for her to look at and admire her brilliance. She also admitted that the motive I suspected was correct, and even that it WAS over her trying to steal it. She even admitted to threatening him with a revolver that I found in the search, and he was acting in self-defense. I was there in court to see her sentenced to life on parole for plenty of counts of spousal abuse and manipulation, and plenty more counts of perjury.
