#3 of A Story For Hunter

This title started off as a working title, and it just stuck.

Tim and Hunter both go their separate ways for the day, Tim to work and Hunter to class. Even though the universe has decided to mess with the poor wolf, giving him tons of flack all at one time.

Hunter's diabetes and ataxia are both hold-overs from the events leading up to he and Tim meeting. Yet, hunter is strong and independent and can usually function well. He occasionally requires the use of a cane to get around, though it isn't often. This is, however, why he cannot drive. He has a minor lack of coordination that makes it hard for him to actually operate a car. Other than these two remnants, he is fine otherwise. Tim is better at remembering his medication, simply because Tim is good at memorizing things like that.

Also for those who don't know: Christine is a character from Slice of Lex too.

A Tuesday for Hunter

By: Jenny Harlow

Tim woke up, Hunter was shaking in his sleep. He would make a small whimper every now and again. "Hunter?" He shook the wolf gently.

Hunter sat up on the bed, staring out into space, his eyes open but unfocused. "NO, YOU CAN'T TAKE ME AWAY FROM HIM!" He shouted. Tim held him gently, rubbing his back. "He's the best thing I've ever had happen to me." The wolf sobbed as he slumped, his eyes closing again for a second.

"Hunter, wake up darling you're having a nightmare." He kissed the wolf between the closed eyes. "It's alright, I'm not going anywhere, and neither are you." The wolf leaned onto him. His eyes opened again, half-lidded and sleepy this time.

"Tim," Hunter tucked his head under the husky's chin, he was still shaking. "I dreamed there was a shadow, it walked out of the T.V. it said my parents were coming for me, they were going to take me away from you and lock me up."

"It's just a dream, I'm right here and I'm not letting anybody take you anywhere you don't want to go." The husky nuzzled his chin between the frightened wolf's ears. Tim looked at the clock on the cable box across the room. "It's almost seven in the morning," He observed with a yawn. He then rubbed his eyes. "While I'm thinking about it, you didn't check your sugar before eating last. Would you be okay if we checked it now, it would sure make me feel better." The wolf nodded, he moved aside so Tim could stand up. The husky stretched, getting some sensation back into his arms. Hunter fell asleep again, he didn't snore but it was easy enough to tell that he'd started to drift off. Tim got the small black pouch out of Hunter's backpack. He took the arm the wolf left exposed, and gently held it between his arm and his body, turning his back to the wolf. He parted his fur so that he could see down to the skin of his finger, he kissed the site before cleaning it with the alcohol swab. Tim put the lancett against the skin, and counted down slowly from three. There was a soft click, and Hunter let out a quiet snort, momentarily attempting to draw his arm back. Tim took the monitor and held it to the small wound.

"Testing," A small computerized voice said, "Okay, I've got your results." The small screen was filled with information.

"Sixty five milligrams per decilitre." Tim shook the wolf again.

"What's up? Everything okay." The wolf's speech was a little slurred.

"You need to eat something," The husky nurse said, looking at his partner. "I'll get you some of that candy from your backpack, and I'll cook you something good to eat for breakfast." The husky walked over, opening the wolf's pack. He fished through the textbooks and coiled headphones, eventually pulling out the medium sized bag of Jolly Ranchers. He took out three of them, dropping them into the wolf's hand. "What all did you eat yesterday?"

"Um, for breakfast I had a hard-boiled egg, and Two half-pieces whole wheat toast, and a cup of orange juice. I didn't really have a chance to eat lunch. I fell asleep... I'm sorry Tim." The wolf said, he was shivering under his blanket as he sat up, popping one of the candies into his mouth.

"It's alright, just concerned for you, that's all. What about snacks? Did you at least make sure to eat a small snack between your nine and eleven classes?"

"Yeah, I did. I had a bag of pretzels and a Slim Jim with a bottle of water. I also had to stop and eat a couple pieces of candy in Gym, I got really dizzy."

"That's alright... You didn't really eat enough yesterday, you need to make sure not to skip lunch if you can, especially if you're going to eat so little at breakfast." Tim was in the kitchen, taking down several seasonings, a couple cans of mimus meat, a box of rice, and some lemon juice. "How 'bout that mimus and rice I mentioned earlier? It's filling, it'll stick with you a while too." Tim walked back into the bedroom.

"Why, good sir are you fixing me breakfast in bed?" Hunter said with a small smile.

"Indeed I am m'lord." the husky said, his tail flourishing as he gave an elaborate bow. He walked back out to the kitchen, hearing the TV click on, and the Xbox start behind him. Tim whistled as he cooked. Hunter smiled, hearing the faint whistling in the kitchen. His shaking was slowly going away as the sugar from the candy hit his system. He momentarily looked at the binder laying on the dresser next to him, then shrugged, leaving it where it lay for the moment. "You want green beans or broccoli?"

"Uh, green beans..." The wolf said, he was currently engrossed in a movie he'd started watching, blanket wrapped around his shoulders like a tent. "And maybe one of my bottles of lemonade?" Hunter loved twenty ounce bottles of Country Time, a treat he'd occasionally give himself.

"Sure," Hunter could already smell the food, the scent wandering into the room and making his stomach grumble. Tim's mimus and rice being one of the foods that made Hunter really sit up and take notice of what his body was telling him. Tim came around the door, carrying a small tray. He set it down in front of Hunter, kissing his nose as he did so. Hunter looked down at the tray, there was a large bowl of the main dish, a small bowl of green beans, a plate with two slices of buttered wheat toast on it, and a bottle of lemonade. Tim sat down next to the wolf, he had a couple Hot Pockets on a small plate. Hunter started to take a bite then looked over at his mate. "What's wrong babe?" Tim said, as he bit into his breakfast.

"Why don't you have some? You normally fix more than I can eat anyway." Hunter said, looking down at the food in front of him.

"Nah, that's all yours, and there's more in the kitchen for later. Believe me, if I'd wanted some I would've had it. Just felt more like a probactro BBQ kind of morning." He smiled as he rubbed the wolf's shoulder under the blanket. "So go on and eat, while it's still hot."

With a smile, Hunter took a bite of the food. "Good as always." He ate slowly but happily, drinking a sip or two of his lemonade every now and again. The wolf managed to eat the entire bowl of rice and the green beans, yet he only took a couple bites of toast before calling it quits. "I'm so full." The wolf said, leaning back and patting his stomach.

"I'm glad, you seem to eat that really well every time I fix it for you." Tim leaned his head onto the wolf's shoulder, rubbing his soft belly fur. Hunter normally doesn't eat much, but the mimus and rice is so light that he doesn't get full as quickly. The wolf took a couple more sips of the lemonade before setting it aside with the tray. Tim looked at the clock again, sighing heavily. "Well, it's time I get ready for work. You got a ride to school?" He said, grumpily getting out from under the blankets.

"Yeah, Handi-cab, then Bridget's taking me home."

"That's good then. If you're hungry when you get home there's more rice and green beans in the fridge for later. As I said earlier." Tim said, as he grabbed his towels for a shower. "You wouldn't wanna join me would you?" He asked, peeking around the corner.

"No thanks, I'm good under the blanket for now, feeling kind of cold." Hunter rubbed his arms under his blanket tent.

"Okay, see you when I get out." With that the husky disappeared into the bathroom.

Hunter lay back down, yawning and stretching. He arched his back a little at a cramp. "Did I eat too fast?" He said, squinting. It wasn't until he sneezed that he got an answer. "Well fuck." He said, with a frown on his face. "I should've guessed this was coming." He stood up, looking down at the bed beneath him. He sighed gratefully, his boxers had caught most of the damage. He groaned slightly, rubbing his eyes with the heels of his palms. He slowly walked towards the bathroom, his blanket draping off his shoulders like a cape. He opened the unlocked door.

"Decide to join me after- Oh." Tim said, looking down at the spreading red. He smiled, as he took the wolf in his arms. "You okay? Blankets need changing?" He asked, holding the wolf to him.

"I'm fine, really. It just messed up my underwear." Hunter reached into the cabinet, extracting a product he didn't really want to deal with. Tim started to step into the shower, Hunter caught the curtain for a second.

"What's up?" The husky said, looking concernedly at his wolf.

Hunter pecked him on the cheek before taking the blanket back out with him. He closed the door and returned to their bed. He didn't have classes today until two thirty, which meant that he had plenty of time to lay in bed before the cab arrived to collect him. He wasn't sleepy, he didn't feel rested though. He shivered slightly as he pulled the blankets up over himself. He wished Tim didn't have to work today. Tim came out of the shower, Hunter looked up to see the husky wrapped from the hips down in a black towel, warm steam coming off of him. "Hey, can you do me a favor?" Hunter said quietly, laying his head back on his pillow.

"What is it?" The dog said, sitting on the edge of the bed.

Hunter lifted the covers slightly. "Hug me under the blankets for a minute, I can't seem to get warm on my own right now."

Even though Tim's fur was still wet, the husky crawled under the blankets, wrapping his mostly dry arms around the wolf. He could feel the wolf's shivers dissipating. Finally, he stopped all together. "Better?" He asked, planting a soft kiss on Hunter's shoulder. The wolf tilted his head sideways as the dog's lips touched him.

"Yeah, wish we could stay like this all day."

Tim rolled over, reaching into the nightstand next to the bed, "Let me check your temperature, just to make sure you're okay." Hunter opened his mouth, Tim placed the small thermometer under his tongue. He gently kissed the wolf's ear. "You feel warm, but that doesn't automatically guarantee that you have a fever." The thermometer peeped. Tim slid it slowly out and checked the small screen. "Ninety nine point one." He said, staring at it. "Low-grade, but it's still technically a fever." He shrugged. "If you feel like going to class, go. It's just History and English tonight, and you love those classes. Besides, sometimes a small rise in temperature is expected when you're... you know." He rubbed Hunter's back for a moment as he checked the time. "I've got to get dressed and go babe. Take care of yourself, try and eat lunch today, and don't forget you've got a doctor's appointment tonight."

Hunter rolled over, taking the husky's hand as he stood up. "Got it, eat lunch, be ready when you get home to go to doctor. I think I can remember all of that." Hunter said with a smile, "Love you," He let Tim's hand go, tucking it back under the blanket.

"Love you too." Tim pulled the tank over his head, he quickly pulled his scrubs on before dashing out the door, he kissed Hunter on the lips. "See you tonight." Hunter turned back to the TV at the sound of the door closing, lying diagonally across the bed.

He unpaused his movie, holding a pillow to his stomach. When the movie went off he checked the time, it was barely after nine, Tim probably just arriving at the hospital. Hunter sighed and reached to pick up his blue bathrobe. He decided to take a shower, regretting putting his foot outside the blankets immediately. Still, he decided to commit fully and got up. He grabbed his green and black striped towel on his way out of the bedroom. He dropped his boxers so that he wasn't wearing any clothing at the moment, the end goal being to be naked under the water anyway. Keeping his underwear on didn't quite make sense to him. After all, Tim wasn't home and even if he were he likely wouldn't have cared. His right leg shook slightly as he got into the shower, and he sat down on the bench with a sigh. "It's just gotta be one of those days." He said, rubbing his legs. Ever since he got out of the hospital where he and Tim met, he suffered from occasional bouts of what Tim called 'Ataxia'. He frowned, he'd left his cane in the bedroom and Tim wasn't at home. He reached up and started adjusting the shower, when he was content he pulled the head down and ran the water down his front, watching some stains leave his fur and run down the drain. He leaned back, exposing his full chest and stomach to let the water stream down it. He had been chilled just before now, but his body was slowly beginning to warm up in the small, steam filled chamber. He reached the small shelf, a shelf in the shape of a turtle, that contained all of the bath supplies. He grabbed the bottle of shampoo, and shook it. "Ah, still enough." Hunter said, as he let the cool gel flow into his palm, tucking the shower head onto the holder on the wall. He began to lather himself, starting from his stomach and radiating outwards. Just as he got to the point beneath his breasts, a hammer-blow-like pain coursed over the surface of his right breast. He rubbed the shampoo in more carefully, avoiding overly hard contact with the sensitive tissue. He finally reached between his legs, closing his eyes as he carefully washed himself. Right now, he wasn't in the mood for anything other than getting that area clean. Dried blood washing off his fur as he ran the soap through. Once he was fully soaped, he pulled the shower head free again. The gentle patter and warmth of the water actually soothing his sore chest. When he was finished with his shower, and warmed through, he grabbed his towel and patted as much of his fur dry as possible. He slipped his robe on, and slowly walked out of the bathroom. He he pulled of his robe and lay down on the bed, looking up at the ceiling for a moment, trying to figure out if he was actually going to class today. He picked up his phone, and brought up his messages. He smiled, one of the last messages he got from Tim was of the husky in his boxers with a flower in his teeth. He giggled slightly as he shook his head. "Hey babe, not sure when you'll get this. Thinking about staying home today." The wolf texted. He set down his phone and closed his eyes again.

"Okay, any tests today you're aware of?" Hunter was surprised at the immediacy of the response, considering Tim likely wasn't on break yet. He looked at the clock, it was just passing ten.

"No, not that I can remember." Hunter tried to think about what was on the schedule for today, but shrugged.

"You'll know what to do. Got to go now, was actually just taking a brief bathroom break. Love ya, let me know what you've decided to do."

"Love you too, I will. Go do that Superman thing you do." The wolf set his phone down on the table again. He pulled out his Xbox controller, and started browsing for another movie.

Hunter passed his time between watching movies, and playing on his DS. He looked at the clock every so often, closing his DS around one. He stretched and yawned, holding his stomach he closed his eyes. With a small smile he pulled his phone out, "Going to class, see you when you get home." He texted to his husky. He finally reached over and retrieved his binder from the top of the dresser. He fastened it on, wincing for a moment as the sensitive tissue was compressed. He paused for a second, waiting to see if the soreness would dissipate. Finally, he smiled, pulling his t-shirt on over it. He pulled up his pants and grabbed his backpack. On the front pouch, Tim had left a yellow post-it note. "Don't forget to take your sugar and eat lunch before leaving today." Hunter read. He smiled, and kissed the note softly. He sat back down on the bed, the cab not arriving for him for another half hour. He withdrew the small tester out of the drawer. When it finished he looked down at the numbers. "One fifty, that's a little high." The wolf said. He put the meter back in it's pouch and dropped it into the front pocket of his backpack. He walked out into the kitchen, and opened the fridge. He withdrew his insulin, and the tuna fish Tim had fixed the other day. He sat on one of the barstools under the kitchen counter. He set down his medicine and the fish, before retrieving a syringe from the bedroom. He filled the syringe, and closed his eyes as he injected the liquid into himself. He shivered for a second before opening his eyes. He pulled the bread down from its cabinet and fixed himself a quick sandwich. It wasn't a large meal, but he felt like it was enough to keep him going for a while. He picked up the small insulated bag, placed the insulin and a couple syringes inside and checked his phone. His cab had arrived a little early.

"Hello Hunter, this is your Handi-Cab driver, I arrived a little early. If you need a little longer to get ready, I understand." The text read.

"Hi, I'm on my way out." The wolf replied, as he started out the door. He grabbed his collapsible cane in case he needed it later. He walked out, the small blue car with the Handi-cab logo sat near the curb. As he approached the car with his two bags, the trunk opened. He started to place his bags inside when he noticed a small blue backpack already sitting in there. It was decorated with fish stickers. "I wonder who that belongs to?" He said, getting a feeling of familiarity from it. He opened the back door to the cab and hopped inside.

"I hope you don't mind, I had to do an additional pick-up on the way in." The ferret driving said, turning his head around. From the front seat a small gray mouse waved at him, she looked tired even though the day had just started.

"Hey, I recognize you." Hunter said, as he smiled at the mouse. "You're in my English class." She looked at him for a second, and then nodded. "How are you feeling? I haven't seen you in a while." She frowned a little, shrugging her shoulders. She took her phone out of her pocket. She typed a small message and passed it to the wolf.

"Recovering from surgery, yet I've got a cool opportunity to go hang out with other theatre people. My boyfriend would take me, but he's at work." The screen read.

"Oh. I'm sorry to hear that, glad you're doing alright though." The wolf said, passing her phone back. "My boyfriend's at work today too." Hunter looked out the window for a second, watching the familiar sights pass. The cab always drove through Fort Wills on its way to Arlington West. "My name's Hunter by the way, we've never really been introduced. I've seen you with Lexi and James at the GSA though."

The mouse passed her phone back, "I'm Christine, nice to meet you finally. James is my boyfriend and Lexi's my roommate." Hunter read the screen, his eyes widened.

"Oh, cool. Glad I finally get to know your name." He beamed, his tail shifting slowly.

"Me too." The mouse replied. They spent the rest of the drive chatting about their school life and just general small talk. When the cab stopped at the main gate of the campus. Hunter and Christine both hopped out and grabbed their bags from the trunk. "So, you coming back to class?" The wolf said, turning to face the mouse. Christine and Hunter were about the same height.

She shook her head, fishing for her phone in her purse while adjusting her backpack. "I'm excused from class for the next couple weeks. Just didn't want to miss the shows happening at UIL. So I'm meeting another ride at campus here." She wrote.

"Oh, well okay. I'll see you later then." The wolf and mouse waved as they went their separate ways. Hunter walking into the English and Language Arts building, Christine into the theatre. Hunter's phone beeped as he was about to step into class.

"Glad you're feeling better, hope you have a good day, transferred you some money in case of emergency." The husky said, he also attached a picture of himself flexing his muscles in the mirror. Hunter just rolled his eyes at his goofy mate.

His first class seemed to blow quickly by, mostly because it was a test review and the professor had little else planned. As Hunter started to stand up, he felt his right leg wobble. With a sigh he slid his cane out, and used it to aid himself out of the chair. As he walked out of the building, headed towards the psych building where his history class was, he bumped into the mouse again. "Oh hey, I've got the notes from the review for you if you want them." He said, reaching into his backpack.

The mouse nodded, her backpack slung over one shoulder. She took the notes, and fished her phone out. "Thank you." She said. She then held her phone back again, placing a hand on the wolf's shoulder, signaling him not to leave just yet. She turned her phone around and handed it to the wolf.

"You want my number?" He said, with a raised eyebrow. The mouse nodded. Hunter shrugged and placed the number into her phone. He stood there for a second longer as she sent a quick, simple text to him. "Okay, cool. See you when you get back to class." He waved at the mouse, as she headed towards the cafeteria. He walked into his next class, momentarily panicking when he didn't see the ocelot Bridget. He still had his phone out, it buzzed and the screen showed a picture of the ocelot.

"I'm coming, I'm just stuck in some traffic on Rosewood. Tell Prof. London I'll be there within fifteen minutes for me." Hunter let out a relieved sigh as he put his phone back into his pocket. He sat down towards the front, rubbing his eyes a little. He reached into his backpack and fished out two of the Jolly Ranchers and popped one into his mouth, feeling the telltale signs of low sugar. He was relieved when the ocelot walked in, sitting down next to him.

"Hey, sorry if I worried you any." She said, patting him gently on the back. The wolf merely smiled at the ocelot, offering her a piece of candy. After the lecture, the two walked out together, headed for the student parking. "Your leg bothering you today?" She said, noticing his cane.

"Yeah, just doesn't want to take my weight right now." Hunter just shrugged. "Still it is what it is." He said with a small smile.

She let him put his arm around her shoulder. "That's at least a decent attitude to have towards it." She helped him sit in the small green car, before taking his bags and hers and dropping them into the backseat. "Straight home, or are you hungry?"

"I'm not exactly hungry, though Tim cooked a lot of extra for breakfast today. If you want something though, I'd like to pay you back for the ride."

"That sounds good, thanks Hunter." She said, kissing him teasingly on the cheek.

He stood in the doorway and waved to her as she drove off down the block, her house not far away from his and Tim's. The wolf walked back into the house. He sat down on the couch, taking up as much space as he desired. He picked up the remote, another note was attached to it. He looked pensively at it, rubbing his stomach. He shrugged, not feeling hungry at the moment. After a brief check to determine that his sugar was in a good place, he tucked the device back in the bedroom drawer, and the medicine back in the fridge. There was little left to do now but sprawl out on the couch and wait until Tim got home. He was already dressed and otherwise ready to go. He flipped on Cartoon Network, kicked his shoes and pants off, and pulled his blanket out from its storage and draped it on his lap.

About an hour later, he heard the honking in the driveway. He stood up quickly, and pulled his pants and shoes back on. He moved outside, still relying on his cane a little, hopping in the white mini-van. "Hey, how was class today?" Tim said, as his mate buckled himself in. He had pulled his scrubs top off and thrown it in the backseat for the moment. A slobbish act he wouldn't normally do.

"It was alright, mostly reviews in both classes. There's one more test in both classes before the final. Luckily, that means the final's only going to be a few chapters worth of material." Hunter adjusted himself in the seat as the van backed out of the driveway. "What about you, how was work?" Hunter looked over at the husky, he looked tired but still cheerful.

"Pretty good... I actually got to help deliver a baby today." He said with a smile.

Hunter leaned over and kissed his mate's shoulder, as it was really the only thing he could reach with the seatbelt on. "My hero," the wolf said fondly.

The doctor's office was a two-story building, the clinic on the second story. When the car stopped, Tim got out and walked around to the other side, he opened Hunter's door. Being silly, he gently lifted the wolf out of the seat, carrying him by his legs and shoulders. He was once more treated to a kiss on the chin. "You feeling alright?" He said, as he set the wolf down and helped him stabilize himself.

"Yeah, I'm okay, just having problems with my leg cooperating. Nothing out of the ordinary." The wolf started to walk towards the door. The husky closed the door on the van, and followed slightly behind him, ready to catch him if he went down. Yet for all of the issues Hunter has, he manages fine on his own. He and the husky got into the elevator, Hunter mistrusting the staircase today. They walked into the office waiting area, Hunter taking the intake forms. He sat down next to Tim, handing the husky the papers.

Tim took them, with a small nod. When it came to filling out medical forms Tim knew what he was doing, and could remember things about Hunter's medications the wolf had difficulty remembering. Hunter laid his head on the wolf's shoulder, watching as he wrote. He passed the papers back to the wolf. "There ya go, all set."

Hunter brought the papers back up to the receptionist, who smiled at him and took the papers. He started to turn around and walk into the bathroom. "Mr. Grayson?" The receptionist called, leaning around the counter. He turned mid step. "I know it might seem funny to do, but men don't have to fill out the section on menstruation." She said, holding the clipboard. Tim looked up, the receptionist wasn't the otter he was normally used to. The smiling ferret clearly did not know Hunter at all. "I'm afraid I'm going to have to ask you to fix the form." She said, sliding it back over the counter.

Tim stood up, his ID badge still hanging from the waistband of his pants. "There isn't a mistake." Tim said, the waiting room was only occupied by a couple more people, the husky lowered his voice. "Hunter is FtM, Dr. Choi knows this. Yes, he is currently, much to his dissatisfaction, having a period."

"Oh, okay well I'll just fix the gender marker on her form then." The receptionist said, preparing to cross out the M on the form. Tim's mouth was agape, Hunter looked back curiously.

"Go ahead to the bathroom babe, I'll straighten this out." Tim said with a forced smile. He then turned back to the ferret. "Listen, Hunter is a male, Dr. Choi respects that. There are no errors on his form." He said, his eyes narrowing as he looked into her eyes. "Tell me something, are you actually a nurse, or just someone who does the paperwork? Most of Dr. Choi's nurses also respect Hunter, and some of them are quite fond of him."

"I am a registered nurse, yes." The ferret said with a smug smile.

"As it happens, so am I. I just got off an eight hour shift on my feet, where I've been thrown up on, delivered a baby, and had to sponge bathe several people in various states. I do not feel like standing here and watching my boyfriend get mistreated." The husky said. "Don't touch anything on that form. Do you understand what I'm saying?" Tim leaned in close. The ferret swallowed and nodded, placing Hunter's form in the intake box without touching it. "You will call him: He, him, and Mr. Grayson, are we clear?" The ferret nodded slightly. "Good." Tim said with a smile, straightening up and rubbing his back. "Oh... I shouldn't have leaned that far over." His lower spine let out a low pop as he bent this way and that.

His phone buzzed, it was Hunter. "Need help, stuck on toilet, sorry." The text said. Tim sighed, as he walked to the bathroom door. It was locked.

"Can you unlock the door?" Tim asked.

"No, it's too far away to reach." The wolf responded on the other side.

The cowed receptionist walked over, holding a small key. She unlocked the door, smiled apologetically at Tim,then sat behind the desk again. The husky walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind him. Hunter was clearly blushing under his fur. "It's okay babe, nothing I haven't seen before." The husky said soothingly. He held out his hand, Hunter took it. He wrapped the other one gently around the wolf's body, and pulled him up. Kissing him as he came to his feet. "There we go."

Hunter leaned on his cane, attempting to bend down and pick up the pair of pants around his ankles. He made several frustrated grunts. Without a word, Tim bent over and lifted the pants up. "Thank you my darling." Hunter said embarrassedly.

"It's no problem, you need help washing your hands, or do you have it?" The husky said. He didn't want to help Hunter unnecessarily as it hurt his feelings when he did.

"I think I can manage." The wolf said with a sigh. He leaned on the sink, carefully shifting to get soap on his hands. He washed up, and stood back up. He turned back around to look at the husky, a small, self-confident smile on his face. The two walked out together, sitting back down in the waiting room. Right as Hunter's rear touched the seat, another Nurse walked out.

"Hunter Grayson?" The nurse called, looking around the room. Hunter sighed, holding his hand up again. Tim helped him up, and the nurse led them back into the rest of the clinic. "Can you stand without your cane?" The nurse asked, as they approached the scale. Hunter shook his head. With a pat on the shoulder, the nurse offered him a seat. "Wait right there, I'll be right back." The nurse brought a wheelchair and weighed it empty. She then helped Hunter seat himself, and weighed it with the wolf on it. She tapped a pen to her chin as she read the results. "One hundred point five pounds." She said, tilting her head to the side. She wrote the number down, then wheeled the wolf into an exam room. She did all the initial checks: temperature, blood pressure and heart-rate. "Any medications?" She asked. Hunter turned the floor over to Tim who proceeded to give a list. "Alright, Dr. Choi will be with you in a moment." The cat said, walking out the door and closing it behind her.

"I didn't see your temperature, did you?"

"Yeah, ninety eight point eight." Hunter said, giving a thumbs up to the husky. The dog nodded, looking around the room and at the random posters. Hunter lay down on the table, the two canines sitting in companionable silence.

Dr. Choi walked in, the siamese cat was holding Hunter's chart. "Hi Hunter, so glad to see you." She said, sitting on the black rolling stool. She smiled at Tim. "Nice to see you too Tim, heard you had a bit of a problem with our temporary receptionist. I'm sorry about that, you know our office doesn't act that way." She gave the husky a small pat on the shoulder. Hunter had barely caught the conversation between his dog and the ferret. She turned back to the wolf, "Anyways, have you been keeping track of your sugar?" She said, holding her hand out. From his pocket, Hunter extracted the small notebook and passed it to his doctor.

"Tim's been helping me keep track of it."

"Well that's good." She said, as she flipped through the pages since their last appointment. "Your sugar seems to be bottoming out more than it used to." She noted, writing several things down on the chart. "We might have to adjust your insulin dose. Have you been eating regularly?" The cat said, putting stress on that last word.

Hunter crossed one leg over the other, hanging his head low. "No... I'm sorry..."

"It isn't your fault Hunter." The doctor said, patting him on the leg, she noticed that the wolf flinched a little. "Try setting a reminder on your phone, something that goes off every so often. Does that sound like something that might help?" The cat said, writing again.

"Yeah, I guess. I don't know why we haven't thought of that." The wolf said, looking over at his mate. "Tim has been leaving me little notes everywhere. It's really sweet." He leaned gently over, Tim's chair was close enough that he could just rest his head on the dog's shoulder. The dog blushed slightly under his coat.

The doctor nodded. "Is your leg alright, is it okay if I touch it?" She said, moving the stool over. Hunter nodded, leaning further into his dog. The doctor placed her hand just above Hunter's foot. "Let me know when it hurts." She slid her hand upwards, halfway between his foot and his knee, Hunter whimpered slightly, his leg kicking backwards. "Doesn't feel swollen, might just be sore from spasming," She said, looking through Hunter's chart to earlier appointments. "I'll prescribe you an anti-inflammatory, nothing too major, just some Naproxen to help with the pain and swelling. That doesn't look like it will interfere with any of your other medicines." She winked at the wolf, "It may make some other things easier to deal with as well." She stood up, "As for the spasming, there aren't a lot of drugs I can prescribe off the top of my head. I'll send your pharmacist a prescription later when I find one that should work." The cat said, standing up. "Okay so just to recap, eat more regularly. If your sugar stays in flux we might consider adjusting your insulin dosage. You could also stand to gain about five pounds by the way." The cat said concernedly, "Other than that, keep your leg warm, or ice it whichever helps, come back and see me, or go to the ER if it gets worse." She said, patting the wolf on his shoulder. "I'll set you up with another appointment to follow up, you can get the information from Jessica, so you don't have to mess with the Temp." The doctor told the wolf. With one last wave she exited the room. Tim helped Hunter hop off the bed and the two of them proceeded out the door.

"What happened up there?" Hunter said quietly, tilting his head towards the reception desk.

"Don't worry about it, it would only make you upset." The husky said, hugging Hunter to his side. They paid their bill, took the prescriptions and left the office. "So answer me this," Tim said, helping Hunter up into the van. "You hungry? It's barely past seven. I know I'm starving."

Hunter looked down at his stomach, then back at the husky. "Can we go get El Ninos?" Hunter asked, looking at the dog.

"Sure, I don't see why not." He started to close the door and then paused, "I'm paying though." He said with a grin. Hunter laughed as Tim got into the van, and they headed home. It had been a slow day for the wolf, but he enjoyed it none the less. He chatted excitedly about his schoolwork and his newly expanding social life to the husky, who smiled quietly the entire time. As long as Hunter was happy, Tim was happy right now. Finally the wolf stopped talking, content to just stare out the window and listen to the radio. He reached his hand over, fondly rubbing the husky's arm. Tim took a hand off the wheel, gently taking his hand for a moment.
