#36 of Shaman Squirrel Chronicles

This takes place in SY 1853, which is 71 years after Pakaly, the Shaman Squirrel. Kaysam is the great granddaughter of Pakaly. It's also 239 years before Bluestone: A Shaman Squirrel Special. Kaysam will be the 6-greats grandmother of Welkety from Bluestone.

Kaysam, a 19-year old Shaman Squirrel, was outside her new cottage that she recently moved into. She was watching something that was practically a once in a lifetime event. Tatydra, one of the Cygnan Mammalian Dragons, was being mated. This was Tatydra's fourth heat cycle, an event that takes place once every 121 years for the now 474-year old Mammalian Dragoness. Tatydra was massive, and she had rich chocolate brown fur accented by yellow fringes at the tips of her wings and her belly. She had a flowing golden mane and a goat-like beard on her chin.

"They've been going at it for ten days now," Kaysam said, observing the small male breeding Tatydra, who was roughly thirty times his weight. "That means the two are about finished breeding." Tatydra was laying on her side, with her left hind leg in the air, while the little male was standing on her inner right thigh, with his forepaws on her lower belly. Both the huge female and tiny male had expressions of ecstasy on their faces. The male was quite well endowed, and kept thrusting in and out of Tatydra. There was already copious amounts of sperm dripping everywhere from the previous days they were mating.

Kaysam's boyfriend Enlor and friend Britha were also watching. Enlor was a chubby anthro prairie dog, and Britha was an slender anthro meerkat. "It's amazing the little guy knows what to do," said Enlor, chuckling.

"And he's so cute," said Britha. "I want to hug him when he's done."

"You've been telling us how cute he is for the last 10 days now," said Enlor.

"He's cute, but I don't think he's tame enough to be hugged," said Kaysam.

"Now that they're about done mating," said Enlor, "maybe we can go on some adventure. I was looking forward to a trip, but I didn't want to miss this."

Sounds good," said Kaysam. "My parents can watch Tatydra and the little guy to make sure everything else goes well with them."

Kaysam's parents were a female Shaman Squirrel named Wokohwi and a male fox named Anduin. Kaysam had the capability of shapeshifting between squirrel and fox forms due to a green orb that allows Shaman Squirrels to take the form of either parent species. She wore a communications wristband, the only form of advanced technology she possessed. She tapped, "Mother, I will be away with Enlor and Britha," Kaysam said. "Can you watch Tatydra and her mate?"

"Sure thing," replied Wokohwi.

In the front of her cottage, Tatydra's daughter Sarima was resting. Sarima was 361 years old and had been conceived during Tatydra's first heat cycle.

Kaysam petted Sarima's neck. "Hey girl, would you like to give us a ride?"

Sarima had the same gold and yellow fringes as her mother Tatydra, but her body fur was mostly grayish in color. Sarima slowly got up, revealing her massive size to be a little larger than Tatydra. Although Cygnagons are incapable of speech, she nodded approval. Sarima squatted down to allow Kaysam, Enlor, and Britha on. She was already harnessed, and the three travelers had packs of food and supplies. When the three friends were on, Sarima took off, heading south.

Sarima had been flying for hours. The majestic Cygnagon found a clearing in a tropical forest, and landed. Her foot falls alerted the three that she had landed.

"It's beautiful!" said Britha.

"I think we're in a jungle of sorts," said Kaysam. The three of them dismounted Sarima.

Many large leafed plants and lianas graced the jungle, as well as an odd assortment of colorful otherworldly looking trees. The vine-adorned trees towered over the dense, lush undergrowth. The calls of various birds, shmirds, small mammals, and insects created a cacophonous symphony.

The three of them looked around, wide eyed at nature's beauty. "I wonder if anyfur lives out here," said Enlor. "It would be... ouch!" he said. "I think a bug just bit me," he said, brushing something off his shoulder.

"That wasn't a bug," said Kaysam. "Looked like some type of plant spore."

"It stung, whatever it was," said Enlor. "You know, I'm feeling kind of light headed, but I'll be alright."

A moment later, an attractive female leopard came from behind a huge kapok tree. "Hello, chubby one," the leopardess said. "Remember me?"

"Amiel, is it really you?" asked Enlor.

"Well of course it's me, chubbychops," she said.

"Enlor, who are you talking to?" asked Britha.

"Don't you see her?" asked Enlor.

"See who?" asked Kaysam.

"Amiel, she's right there!" said Enlor pointing.

"But Amiel died four years ago," said Kaysam. "I thought you were done grieving her. You're with me now."

"It must be her!" said Enlor. "Only Amiel calls me chubbychops."

"Come, follow me, Enlor," said the leopardess.

"No, you should stay with us," said Britha. "Ouch! I think it's one of those spore things."

"We should get out of here," said Kaysam.

"My dear Britha!" called a voice.

"Daddy!" said Britha. "I though you died defending Kigorith!"

"Not you too, Britha," said Kaysam. "Whatever the spores are, they're obviously causing hallucinations. We got to go rescue Enlor. He's already following his hallucination. Enlor!" she called, approaching where the prairie dog took off.

Kaysam went further into the jungle, until she saw what looked like gigantic seed pods. Britha followed, but only because she was following the hallucination of her father.

"Oh, what cozy looking beds!" the meerkat said.

"They're not beds, and that's not your father!" cried Kaysam. "Enlor is in one of those things for sure. We got to get him out! Ouch!" Kaysam removed a spore from the top of her head. "Oh, no!"

"Well, hello, Kaysam my child," said a voice. Kaysam looked to see an old female squirrel. "It's me, Redra, the first Shaman Squirrel. I'm here to help rescue your friend."

"But you died seven centuries ago!" said Kaysam. "You're not who you say you are."

"Oh, but I am," said the apparition. "I also have some ancient shaman wisdom to share."

"I'm going to do this on my own," said Kaysam. She pulled out a knife, and was about to rip open one of the pods.

"Oh, please don't cut that," said the apparition. "Have a seat," she said, showing Kaysam an empty open pod.

"It looks so cozy," said Kaysam. Then she shook her head. "Must fight this! You're not Redra!" yelled Kaysam, ripping open an active pod. It was a ghastly site. The partially digested corpse of a creature had fallen out. It was a large male Rorfian, an alien canine species. "Eeeyugh!" Kaysam cried when she saw it.

"I told you not to cut that," said the apparition.

"And I told you you're not real!" said Kaysam. "So beat it!"

"You would talk like that to the most ancient of Shaman Squirrel elders?"

Apparently, the Kaysam was immune to the persuasion of a hallucination. She ignored the apparition, and ripped open another pod. Enlor fell out, covered with plant digestive goo. "Wake up, Enlor," said Kaysam. There was no response. Luckily, Kaysam knew exactly what to do next. First, she wiped wiped goo off Enlor's face. Then, Kaysam put her hands above Enlor and closed her eyes, with a strong intent to reverse any physical and mental damage the plant had done to him. A purple mist emanated from her hands, and enveloped Enlor's body.

Enlor blinked twice, and said, "Where am I?"

"You were in a digestion pod of that creepy plant," said Kaysam.

"How'd I get there?" Enlor asked.

"I'll explain later," said Kaysam. "Now we need to rescue Britha."

Before they knew it, Sarima had swooped in from above, and ripped a pod off, and flew off. Kaysam and Enlor ran towards the majestic Cygnagon.

"Come back, Sarima!" said Kaysam. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Why would she just take off like that?" asked Enlor.

"I don't know," said Kaysam. "But it's not like her to bail out like that. Come on, let's find out where she took off."

Both Kaysam and Enlor must have been calling Sarima and Britha for hours. "It's been too long for Sarima and Britha to be gone," said Enlor. "Should we give up and find another way home? It's getting dark."

"Maybe Sarima will come back for us," said Kaysam. Suddenly, she saw a familiar purple mist, of the kind her Shaman Squirrel clan use for healing.

"Please, Kaysam, wake up," said a voice.

"Hear that?" asked Enlor.

"Yes, that sounded like my mother," said Kaysam. "Mother, if you're not another hallucination, I'm already awake. And how did you find me?"

Kaysam really did wake up, and her previous statements and actions had been merely in her head for the last several hours. She found herself covered in sticky goo, inside a pod. To her left and right, Enlor and Britha were waking as well. She looked up to see the kind face of her mother Wokohwi. "What happened?" Kaysam asked.

"You and your two friends were in these digestion pods for the several hours it took for Sarima to fly you back to us," said Wokohwi. "But you're safe at home now."

Enlor was just coming out of his unconscious state when he finally chimed in. "You mean we were in these all along?"

Britha had also woken up. "But... How do we know we're not still hallucinating? We could still be in the pods for all we know."

The three of them got out of the pods. "A nice bath would be a good idea," Kaysam said, trying to brush as much digestive plant goo she could get off of her.

"I concur," said Britha.

"Should we go back and kill the plant?" asked Enlor.

"That's not the Shaman Squirrel way," said Kaysam. "I'm sure it's a necessary part of the jungle ecosystem."

"We could put warning signs around there," said Britha.

"Good idea," said Kaysam.

"I'm not surprised I was picked first for dinner," said Enlor. "Just look at me. I think just about everything on this planet wants to eat a nice chubby prairie dog like me."

Sarima looked down at him and licked her lips, as if anticipating him as a meal. Although she couldn't speak, she was highly intelligent and able to display a sense of humor.

"Oh, great," said Enlor. "I got to ride home on a creature who wants to eat me."

The three of them laughed and joked about their experience, as they were led into the cottage of Wokohwi and Anduin for a good bath.
