Pt 2. The Palace of the Chief

The streets of the capital city bustled with life. Canine werebeast, both human and beast form, rushed about on various duties. Curragh and Kiara walked paw in paw through the morning. It was a fortress city that sat on two mountains. It was complete with rings of walls for defense. The Great Chiefs palace citadel sat at the summit on the larger of the two mountains. It could be seen from nearly anywhere in the city.

The couple made their way through the lower markets. Merchants selling all manner of goods in stands shouted for their products. Kiara convinced Curragh to buy a few bananas and apples to eat on the trip to the palace. Many werebeast stayed in human form in the capital city. Curragh never understood this. The one place their kind could be in beast form in peace many chose not to.

Further up beyond the markets they strolled past the Apex Coliseum, where all sporting events were held including executions and gladiator combat. It was quite an event to see. The mountain air was cool and crisp. A steady breeze rippled through the wolves' long hair on their heads. Curragh held her close. Giving her tail the occasional pet and her rump a playful squeeze. It took nearly half an hour but the two arrived at the massive palace gates. Kiara knew every passage and corridor within very well being a guard.

Curragh was taken aback just from the palace gates. Two fifty foot gates housed in an even larger gate house. It was his first time in the palace. He had never met the Great Chief before. Only heard stories of the wolf who demanded respect from any he graced his presence to. His pace slowed. He felt a light tug on his crotch. He looked to Kiara who had a gaze assuring him everything will be alright. Her brown eyes always with a spark of life. She had her own ways of sending wordless messages. He followed her into the palace, and greeted by the same fox from earlier with a small bow

"Welcome to the Palace of Chiefs. I am Solomon Peter this way please."

Kiara gave the fox a pat on the back, "Always right to it and so blunt aren't you Sol. Loosen up a bit. How've you been?"

"Miss Kiara like I tell you every day. I am a fox of business. This way please. The Chief expects to meet you in ten minutes. You of anyone knows how large this palace is, and how the Chief feels about tardiness. Now this way please." Solomon replied.

The two followed the fox. He led them past great halls, a vast library, various gardens, and pools. Answering a few of Curragh's questions along the way. Always moving up to reach the destination. The palace was beautiful. It housed all those with political power in the city. The Chief liked to keep a close eye on his inferiors. At times he even had them serve him. His style reminded Curragh of Louis XIV of France. Solomon stopped at the doors to the throne room.

"Good day you two." The fox about faced and left.

"He seems fun at parties." Curragh mumbled.

"You took interest in the fox. Old ways coming back to mind?" she giggled, "Like you're more recent encounter with the blue wolf? You and him are both in the same boat you know, trapped by the werebeast society restraints."

"What?" the white wolf gasped, "Of course not."

She tapped his nose, "You're a terrible liar. You should stick to telling the truth. You had that look. You know... The look you have when you see something or someone you want. That white tipped tail, the ruffle of exposed white fur on his chest, and the golden eyes, you were eying it all sweaty." She chuckled.

"My heart is for you and you alone Kiara. I left those old ways for good when I became a werewolf and met you. Only you can tame the savage beast within me." He took her paw and kissed it.

"I know I'm just messing with you." She replied, "Old ways die hard I guess. At least he was cute one. Don't take things so serious."

"Yeah I'll try."

She smiled, "Don't try; do. You give off the impression anyone can boss you around. You need to change that. Be the alpha I know you are capable of. Perk up, your ears are drooped. Look confident, we are about to meet the Great Chief. First impressions are important." She kissed him.

The doors to the throne room opened. The two reluctantly pulled away. Four wolf guards escorted them down the hall. Curragh couldn't help but gaze about the large room. Try to take in every detail of a place few got to see. At the end he saw the Great Chief himself along with his beautiful mate. A she-wolf of amber fur. Compared to the ornate garments the royal couple wore the two wolves looked like peasants. The Chief was one to display his power and dominance in any way possible.

"Hey follow my lead and don't get too distracted. When questioned answer fully and honestly." Kiara squeezed his paw.

"Distracted by what?"

They caught the gaze of commander Talo and a few others as they passed a table. She took a knee at the base of the dais and Curragh did the same. The Chief gazed down at the two wolves. Both heads bowed low in submission to the Chief. Ears down, and tail neutral in complete submission to the ruler. Curragh caught scent of the Chief and his heart began to pound. It was powerful. A laugh erupted from the Great Chief that echoed through the room.

"Kiara it's good to see you again. You and your friend may stand. How's my most loyal captain doing? The guard who saved my life on an occasion."

"Fine my Chieftain. I wasn't expecting to be called on today." She replied.

"We must apologize for that." The Chiefess said, "I'm sure you and your white furred friend there were enjoying your days off duty. However we must discuss an important matter that will involve your friend."

"We know you well Kiara, but not your white furred friend. Introduce yourself wolf." The Chief point a black furred finger to Curragh. His eyes fell to the silver gem that hung around his neck.

"My name is Curragh. I have been a werewolf for ten years. Bitten when I was twenty. A mere pup in your eyes my Chiefs."

The Chief laughed showing his teeth. They were perfectly aligned and pure white, his canines sharp and fearsome, "A mere pup is right. We have ruled this kingdom for the past three hundred years. Our age surpasses that. Do continue. Where are you from? What clan do you come from? Any family?"

Curragh felt his pants get tighter as the Chiefs emerald eyes fell on him. He was glad he decided to wear undergarments. Not now he thought, "I have an older brother who is a weretiger. I was born and raised in the state of Georgia. I am part of a pack that is in a clan of the same name. We protect the southern flanks of the Kingdom of Wolvos holdings on that side of the continent."

"I commend your service. The Appalachian Mountains are vital territory. Hopefully a war won't tear you and your brother apart. Why are you here?" the Chief continued his questioning assault.

"Kiara told me that she had the weekend off duty plus a few days. We haven't seen each other in nearly five months. We are both kept busy with duties to the kingdom. I cleared it with my pack alpha and was on the next plane out of Atlanta to Alaska." He smiled at the blue wolf.

"Kiara chose well. Some of our best wolves are stationed there. To find one as loving as you is even better. You both have shown dedication to each other and the Kingdom of Wolvos. However you Curragh are quite the oddity. Not only are you a white furred wolf which is rare, but also you are a rogue wolf, even rarer. A wolf created outside of our intricate established systems." The Chiefess responded, "A system that has taken thousands of years to perfect."

The Chief added, "Most rogue wolves are killed on the spot. Yet here you are." He growled, "Here you are, with the most powerful tool of our people. The Moon Stone; you wear as if it is yours to keep."

Curragh felt his heart drop. He didn't like the way they talked of him. Anger clearly present in the black wolfs baritone voice. The Chief never took his gaze from the Moon Stone. Curragh looked to Kiara, but she had no clue what to do either. She flexed her claws ready to strike any who dared hurt Curragh. He smiled at her determination. The four guards were at the ready as well halberds in paw.

The Chief smiled, "Kiara it is a good thing you are on our side. Calm yourself she-wolf no harm shall come to Curragh. As wielder of the true Moon Stone he is just as invaluable to us as he is to you. It is amazing that he remains so calm and timid while having an item that drives most insane. It is also the fact that he is a rogue wolf to why we need him. Come, walk with us."

The Chief and Chiefess strolled from their seats of power. Curragh and Kiara followed suite. Colorful rays of light poured in from the many windows. Curragh walked behind the Chief. The black wolf emanated a very dominate scent. Letting all who smelled it know who was in charge. The white wolf found himself taking long slow breaths of it. Imagining what was under the black wolfs eloquent garments, robes, and feathered headdress.

"What do you know of the werecats Curragh?" the Chief asked.

"Not much my Chieftain." Snapping back to reality, "There are lions, tigers, cheetahs, panthers, jaguars and leopards. I also know their empire is powerful. Even though my brother is a werecat, I don't see him often."

"Very good. Now, what do know of the screening system we have in place for choosing new werebeast?"

"I know it is very arduous system. Designed to evaluate a humans potential to become a werebeast. It looks at the human's physical, mental, and moral sate of being. If all checks out the human may become a werebeast if he chooses."

"You see my Chief. He is familiar with our ways despite being a rouge wolf." The Chiefess laughed, "He will serve us finely."

"What am I here for?" Curragh asked.

"Don't speak unless spoken to." The Chief replied with a light snarl, "Our selection system for new werebeast being wolf, coyote, or fox is in place for two reasons. What are those reasons?"

The white wolf found a sense of pleasure being commanded by the Chief. His deep voice was comforting. He would have adjusted himself, but thought it unwise, "Well my Chieftain. The system is in place to ensure the humans selected are in the percent of humans who will survive the first transformation. The second is to make sure we don't select humans deemed undesirable to our society."

"Precisely!" the Chief remarked. They stopped at a table where sunset red wolf was waiting. His eyes light yellow, and the physique that could rival Atlas.

"Curragh and Kiara may I introduce to Commander Talo. The fox in the blue robes is my diplomatic advisor Tyler Landy, and the lanky yellow coyote is my intelligence advisor Sarah Ludlow."

"It's a pleasure to meet you three." Curragh bowed.

"Now back to the matter of business. Sarah continue where I left off."

The yellow coyote nodded her head. She pulled her long hair across her shoulder; her eyes never leaving Curragh. Kiara took a step closer to the white wolf placing an arm around him. Claiming Curragh, who now tuned to Talo, "Curragh you know included in the list of those deemed undesirable are any humans considered... homosexual in any way shape in form."

Talo snarled, "You also must know that any werebeast found committing such heinous acts or any similar will be executed. They choose not to procreate our people and are useless to us."

Curragh nodded averting his silver eyes from Talo, and focused on the table of papers in front of him.

The Chief spoke, "The ambassador from Camerix is suspected of such crimes. This is the area you are now needed."
