#1 of Furry In A Wolf Pack

This is part one of a short story series describing the life and hardships of a furry living among a regular wolf pack and where it takes her.

Being part of the leaders inner circle was hard enough, let alone being in charge of your little brother under the threat of your massive, alpha papa. What kinda of things could be lurking around the corner?

Stay tuned for more parts, and please feel free to comment!

Bark! Bark! "come play with me Audrey!" bark! Bark!

I got down on my two front paws with my butt sticking up in the air, wagging my tail happily as I barked back at him and playfully growling, showing my puppy teeth.

"Now you two, why don't play outside instead of in the den? You could get hurt in here."

I looked at Kai with my ears perked and my tail wagged faster.

"Yeah! Come on Kai let's go!"

Kai jumped off his front paws and we raced towards the exit of the den, mom watching us from behind and smiling with her head perked. A shadow blocked out the light from the cave entrance, my paws slid in the dark leaving a line in the dirt from each of my paws; I sat my butt down as fast as possible.

"Hi papa!"

Kai slammed his nose into my back and then shook off the pain.

"Hi papa"

I said looking at him, Kai was rubbing his nose with his paw, ouch my nose.

"Where are you two off to?" he looked down at us, standing tall with his ears straight up and tail curved to the sky. My ears pressed flat instantly, my tail lowering, and eyes matching with his chest; Kai was ears perked and tail wagging. The night before I saw dad almost rip an ear off of one of the other pack members who didn't listen to what he said, nobody ever disobeys the alpha. Kai was younger than me, he didn't even have his full puppy claws yet and he didn't understand how important it was to show papa that he wasn't a threat.

"They are heading off to go play by the river"

I heard my mama say to him from behind us, my body immediately relaxing. He lifted his head and relaxed his ears as she came closer to him, they rubbed noses and he licked the fur on her head twice then returned to eyes on us. They stood there together, so majestic, so huge, the length of their legs alone were double our size.

Mama's fur was so soft, on our eyes and on our fur, it was nothing I'd ever seen before in the other pack wolves. She had white fur all over her body with bright, blue eyes like the summer sky. She had brown flecks down near her ankles and paws, and a little on the edge of her tail too, she was so beautiful. I wished I looked just like her. Her ears were so fluffy and her legs were so long, the other wolves say that you could lose her in the snow sometimes because she fits right in. Papa, well papa was a tough looking wolf with a body black as night with some grey wired over his ears, his eyes were jet black and he was taller, not to mention stronger than all of the other wolves. I've never been out at night but mom says that if you tried to spot dad outside when the night sun wasn't shining, you'd have better luck finding a white hare in a snowstorm. Kai was a weird looking pup but everybody said he was beyond handsome, wolf wise. He was a mixture of dark, light and medium browns throughout his whole body except the tip of his ears and his tail, they were pitch black like papa. To me, he just looked like a goofy scruff ball, he was the same size as me and everybody said he was going to be a massive wolf and an amazing new leader for the pack. Now I was a little different, everybody perks their heads whenever I run by with Kai but mama says not to let it bother me. I was bleach white and had bright blue eyes like my mama but I was white all over except in two spots. The tip of my ears were a bright light blue and I also had a bright blue spiral on my right shoulder. I had never seen another wolf with blue on their fur, but mama says it's because I am the pack leader's daughter so I have a special mark to show how important I am. Kai told me once that he heard the other wolves arguing about me and calling me a furry, saying it was a myth, I didn't understand but mama would just push off the subject when I asked about it.

"Audrey?" I shook my head out of thought and tighten my ears back down, "Can you please make sure that your brother doesn't fall into the river? And if he does, you howl for us right away. Do you understand?" he said in a deep, strict voice.

"Yes papa, I understand." I replied as my eyes stayed on his chest.

I sat there waiting for papa to move so I could go but he didn't go anywhere. I looked at mom and her eyes smiled at me.

"Audrey! Can we go or what?"

Kai said as he pushed both of his paws off my back a couple times, I kept my eyes on papa and he stepped closer to mama so I trotted by him scarcely, tail between my legs and ears down. Kai ran past me bolting to the river as fast as possible, my body relaxed, tail began to wag and I tried to catch up with Kai.

Bark! bark! "can't catch me!" bark! "oh yes I can!"

We ran through the pack, looking at the other pups play in the dusty, rock land filled with pathetic patches of grass. Kai was standing on a rock three times our size, on the other side I knew there was thick green grass and the clear, cool clear river that birthed it. I took all my strength and speed from racing through the dust and used it to jump and tackle Kai onto the soft grass.

"Gotcha!"

We landed soft on the thick grass on the other side of the rock, I was standing on top of Kai with my paws on his chest, my legs on either side of his body. His back was flat against the ground, and my tail wagging in the air.

"Told you I could get you!" I said as I stood there, tall and curving my tail to the sky just like papa, "Hey, get off me! I'm going to get you!" He took both of his paws and pushed up on my chest, pushing me off him.

Bark! bark!

He looked at me, ears down and tail slightly wagging, his butt in the air and front paws on the ground.

Grrrrrr - ruff!

He jumped at me and we wrestled, twirling in the grass, nipping each other ears and paws.

After a while, a foreign smell caught my nose, "Hey, Kai stop." He had my tail in his mouth and he was tugging on it from behind me.

Ruff! Bark!

He tugged more, I heard unfamiliar noises from across the river, where some tall yellow grass formed a wall to hide it. Kai continued to pull on my tail, whipping it back and forth with his weak body.

Bark!! I barked loudly at him, "Kai! I said stop it! I'm serious!" he stopped dead in his tracks, tail fell between his legs and his ears fell down with his body. I looked at him, teeth baring and ears down growling lightly with sharp demanding eyes. "Why did you yell at me?" he asked quietly lifting his ears a bit.

With sudden guilt, I sighed and said "Because you weren't stopping and I thought I smelt something weird."

He lifted his body up, and his ears relaxed, his teeth showed as he let out a soft growl under his breath, "Still no need to bark at me like that..."

I heard something and turned my head away from kai, we both looked and settled our eyes on this weird black circle that the tall grass was dancing around. Our ears perked, I was closer to it, and moved my body in front of Kai's so I could protect him if needed. Kai was behind me but looking past me with his eyes focused on it and his head perked a bit, smelling the air, "Audrey, come on, let's go. I don't feel good about this" he whispered into my ear and then tugged on it to signal a get away. I looked down at the ground, seeing if i could pick up any sign of tracks from it.

"Just stay behind me, okay?" I said back to him keeping my eyes fixed on the dark shape.

"Kai?" I said, then waited.

"Kai?" I whispered.

My ears were flat against my skull, my tail touching my stomach and my throat as dry as the dust. No answer, I look back at Kai quickly, trying not to lose my eyes on that circle. Kai was staring at me, no emotion.

"Kai? What's wrong?" he didn't say anything, he swayed from side to side and then fell onto the ground, flat on his side. His ears were relaxed, his tail on the ground, and his body limp.

I panicked.

I forgot all about the circle and started howling for my parents. I jumped up on the rock and howled as loud as I could, everybody was staring at me.

"Help! Get my parents!" Hoooowwwww! oooowwwww! Hoooowwwwlllll!

I howled as loud as I could and saw them start running towards me, dad first, mom behind him and the rest of the pack following. I heard the river gushing from side to side violently, something was taking my brother! This huge monster with dark green, light brown and light green patches all over it, a head of grass and hands like the monkeys in the forests across the flat land.

He grabbed my brother by his scruff with his hands and ran over the river, disappearing into the grass right before papa got here.

"Where is Kai? Where is your brother?"

"He... he was... he is..."

"Audrey! You need to -" he was cut off by the sound of roaring thunder.

"That's an engine!" I heard my mama say, her ears fell down and she looked at my papa concerned.

"Stay here." He said strictly to her then he jumped through the river with two swift jumps and disappeared into the grass followed by four other wolves.

The thunder got farther and farther, "What's happening?"

I looked at mom, she looked terrified, ears and eyes focused on the grass where papa disappeared, I heard shuffling in the grass. The whole pack was here now, staring and standing. Five minutes later papa came out of the grass with the other wolves following him, no sign of Kai. He locked eyes with mama and her legs started shaking beside me, starting to whine. The other wolves came over slowly and started licking her and rubbing their fur with hers, quietly whining around her. Papa came over and they other wolves backed away, licking her tears away as much as he could, "He is gone."

He stayed strong, didn't seem weak at all, he looked at the wolves and told them to leave without saying a word. He looked at me. I was so confused, "where is Kai? What happened?" my ears were perked and my head a little to the side with my confused tail following my body, mama sniffed and got up. She came over and grabbed me by my scruff, my paws folded to my chest and legs curled towards my stomach with the tip of my tail touching the ground.

The three of us went back to the den together, but where was Kai?
