#18 of A Dragon's Final Song

After a moment, Xerocia thought that he had kicked the bucket, and was with his ancestors. But then, a voice came out from within his head.

"Open your eyes. I can't believe you actually close your eyes when facing an enemy."

The red dragon followed his darker self and was surprised of the events unfolding in front of him. Madsen stopped his claws just before it hit Xerocia, but he wasn't only seeing the claws.

He then saw a bloodied furred figure at the claw. It was impaled by one of the claws and was bleeding hard. From the golden brown fur color, Xerocia realized that it was Gordon.

"Gordon, why did you..."

Madsen was also surprised by the abrupt stop of his attack, and felt the warmth at his claws. When he looked upon, he saw the wolf Shifter impaled by one of his claws.

"H-how did you...," said Madsen, not believing what he had saw.

"I absorbed your kinetic energy, bitch," said Gordon while coughing blood. Madsen was surprised by that, but he promptly said, "Nevertheless, you're still dead."

On Xerocia's head, Rex saw what happened and said, "Goddamn it, Gordon!"

"Consider this my fifteenth...."

His sentence was interrupted by a sudden explosion that blew the wolf Shifter's back, spraying blood towards Xerocia. That explosive finish killed Gordon instantly. Madsen, disgusted by the damage, threw Gordon's body away, where it fell towards the ground.

The blood spraying towards Xerocia re-awakened his darker personality. Zarxavio took over and quickly grabbed Madsen's outstretched front leg and scratched on it, drawing fire. The Northern dragon was surprised and pulled away, but the damage was done. It caused that leg to be burned from the inside, paralyzing that part.

"At least we can give him a taste of my fire," said Zarxavio. "Hey, black dog. I didn't know he can absorb all that energy. I thought it's accelerated by time."

"Gordon's ability is to absorb all kind of energy. That explosion was because of his body unable to sustain all that raw energy."

"You don't seem shaken to see your friend dead in front of your eyes."

"He's fine. He's an immortal. Right now he's regenerating, but I doubt it if he can continue fighting with us. It's for the best, though. If he died again, this universe will be at a risk."

"I don't understand about your galactic talk, but all I understand is, that wolf can't die. Well, I don't care. As long as you can still back me up fighting this son of a bitch, we'll wreck him."

Zarxavio's comment made him almost lost concentration. Due to using the time stop ability two times, Madsen resorted to normal melee fight as before. But unlike before, Rex could determine the dragon's cooldown time. It was when Madsen had started tapping into his time stop ability did Rex followed suit by letting Zarxavio move inside the stopped time period. While the snowstorm around them stopped, they fought in the middle of it, engaging in a bloody and violent fight within stopped time. Zarxavio was slightly on disadvantage because of Madsen's capabilities on adapting to every attacks, but Madsen was overwhelmed by Zarxavio's brutal fight and great bloodlust.

In the end, though, the victor was still Madsen. Zarxavio missed one of his attack after getting out of time stop, which prompted Madsen to use his second time-stop period to attack the red dragon and dealt the killing blow. If not for Rex's time slow ability, Zarxavio would be killed, suffering the same fate as Ernest. The attacked grazed his side, but it was enough to make the red dragon to fall to the ground and broke his bones. He became unconscious after that.

"So, this is the strength of a Northern dragon?" said Rex, defeated. "This is insane."

Seeing that two of the dragon fighters in their original team were defeated easily (all due to Madsen's skilled use of time manipulation), Rex felt as if he couldn't do anything, especially since he couldn't use time travel for more than a century. Just then, Gordon ran towards him while shouting, "Use your Eye, Rex! Use your goddamn Eye!"

Gordon's revived sound made Rex thought "Ah, fuck it all!" and ripped his eyepatch. Underneath, he revealed his red eye, with cross-shaped pupil that stared at Madsen, stunning him as if it was looking through his soul. Upon opening his eyepatch, he made a loud shout, and all of time suddenly stopped, including Madsen that wasn't using any time-stop ability at this time. He only let Gordon move in this time-stop.

"Can you use your time travel now, Rex?" said Gordon while staring at Madsen. "Your Eye could be strong enough to do just that."

"I can't use my Eye for that goddamn purpose! If we lost grip of time both of our paradoxes would rip this universe apart and reset it!"

"Come on, Rex...believe in yourself. You haven't done that for 200 years. Just imagine how many energy you've pooled in you."

Rex, in his reluctance, failed to realize that Madsen crossed through his time-stop barrier and grabbed Gordon. Because there wasn't a hint of fear from the wolf Shifter, Madsen quickly understood what happened.

"You're an immortal, but in the most unconventional method I've ever known. Time rewind. The inconsistency in you is great. It would be a shame if I steal it, do you?"

Gordon's calm demeanor suddenly became panicked, as do Rex. The wolf Shifter ran towards Madsen and shouted, "Don't take his immortality! If you do that you'll reset the whole universe!"

"The world is so much better if dragons are the ruler of the world. I regret nothing."

Gordon started to writhe in agony as his time-rewind sustainability was taken forcefully from him. Rex had started feeling time dismantling and failing as Gordon's life energy was sucked. If it continue time would collapse and the universe would reset as a fail-safe. While he knew rewinding time was wrong, he did so anyway for his best friend and must bear the consequences of ripping the universe or resetting it. He wanted to help, but his instinct was telling him not to, since he could die if he forced himself to displace the dragon, and his death also means that Gordon's paradox could reset the universe. Either way, he forced himself to displace Madsen through time, using his Eye of Chronos to amplify his time manipulation and opened the time vortex big enough to pull the dragon.

Madsen was surprised by this and tried to undo it, but despite of his powerful time manipulation, he could prevent himself to be thrown into the vortex. With a last roar echoing through the portal, he disappeared into it as it closed, sending him to an unknown period of time.

Because of Madsen's half-done job on Gordon, everything the dragon took returned to Gordon, sustaining his immortality, which regenerated his lost left front leg. He was partially disoriented, but otherwise, he was okay. He saw his friend walking slowly to him, but he noticed that Rex's eye started to bleed out blood, as if he's crying blood. Knowing this, Gordon sniffed through the stopped time area to find Rex's eyepatch, frozen in the air due to being affected by the Chrono Stop ability. He took it by his mouth and gave it to Rex, who closed his cross-shaped pupiled eye.

"I wish Father Time would appreciate my modifications," said Rex.

"Did you kill that dragon?"

"No...normally it would shred him to pieces, creating echoes through time. But he's a time dragon. I'm sure he's stranded somewhere through time intact. But his actions caused a massive paradox in you."

"So if I lost my immortality the universe would implode?"

"Just resetting it at least five times," said Rex, trying to make a joke. "The universe would explode in itself, kind of like a cluster of Big Bangs happening simultaneously."

"I sure hope it doesn't."

"Maybe when this universe end...you'll be the ultimate Genesis..." Rex suddenly coughed heavily and splattering blood to the snow. All of the sudden time resumed and they were in the middle of the snow-storm again. Xerocia was still lying unconscious beside them, with Ernest nowhere to be seen. Rex was breathing heavily like an asthmatic person, and coughed blood again. Gordon knew this is what happened when Rex over-used his Eye, but displacing a fully-grown dragon in time was more than a Shifter's body could handle.

Gordon tried to find Ernest, relying on his immortality to prevent death, but he couldn't due to the snow closing up on any scent. With Xerocia still unconscious, they couldn't do anything. Gordon pulled Rex with his demi-human form and made a shelter under Xerocia's warm body. He absorbed some of his fire to make one with soundwaves, keeping them warm while waiting for Ernest to come get them, when he had done with his repairs.

Meanwhile, Madsen was thrown through time, yet he was aware of it. He tried to find an opening in the rift, and found it in an unknown era. He then felt weakened after getting out of the rift, in the middle of a dragon's gathering. One of the dragons, a grey Northern dragon, approached him and said, "Where do you come from? You just...popped out of nowhere."

"Just give me some food...and water..."

After doing so, Madsen's vision suddenly cleared after temporal blindness and disorientation. He could see tall white structures in the distance, with some dragons flying around it. He could also see humans riding weird metallic flying objects hovering around them. He wanted to attack the humans, but he stopped before causing any problems, since there were many Northern dragons around him, casually talking to humans. The scene made him disgusted, prompted him to ask, "Do you actually make these humans thrive? Just where am I? Why does the landscape looked different?"

"Uh...I don't know if you're a stowaway of a colony ship, but we are in Martonis, a colony planet. We guarded the humans from unknown threats and this might come weird but there are some...space dragons."

Upon hearing that, there was a laser cannon that almost hit them, prompting them to scatter. Madsen saw some dragons that was unlike the dragons he knew back in his time. This one had four wings and six legs, and made a shriek instead of a roar. The abomination was glowing blue as it shot a volley of laser shot, breaking through a dragon's shield and grazing him. One of the Northern dragons used a powerful blue flame, but they were quickly overwhelmed by the lasers and were forced to go back.

"Shit! I can't believe it!" said the Northern dragon beside Madsen. "We're supposed to be the strongest dragon on Earth and that dragon overwhelmed us. Hey, Outlander!"

"You're talking to me?" asked Madsen.

"Think you still have the power to fight those dragons? We need any appreciated help."

Despite of still unable to process of what was going on, Madsen's battle instinct rose up and made him feel pumped. It was still better than seeing humans die, and it was a worthy opponent. He was a proud Northern dragon, and now he could fight with some.

"Give me the call. I'll shred that dragon to small pieces," said Madsen with a grin.

"Talked like a true Northern dragon of old. Time to claim this planet as ours!"

Madsen opened his wings, preparing to attack the multiple limbs abomination. He never felt as pumped as this before. The thrill of fights was even better than domination. He may not be able to exact revenge to the two wolf Shifters that made him like this. Unknowingly, he thanked them.

It was really a good day to die hard...
