Warning! This chapter is very, very sad.

Wyatt sat down on the bed next to Troy and said, "Are you alright hun?"

Troy grimaced and said, "Don't know, the doctor hasn't told me."

Gideon looked at Carol and she shrugged. "I'm fine for now," Troy said to Wyatt, "but the doctor said he wants to keep me here until they figure out what's the matter with me."

Wyatt nodded and said, "Can I stay?"

"No," Carol said strictly, "we don't know if what Troy has is contagious or not and you have school tomorrow."

Wyatt sighed and said, "Alright."

Wyatt stood up and hugged Troy as tight as he thought it would be safe to do so. "Bye hun," Troy said.

"I'll come back for a little bit tomorrow." Wyatt said, "Love you."

Wyatt turned around and Gideon put and arm around him as they walked, "He's gonna be alright Wyatt."

"I hope so," Wyatt said.

Gideon sighed and rubbed his shoulder. Raymond put an arm around Gideon's waist and said to Wyatt, "Troy will be fine."

Wyatt nodded. He still didn't believe Raymond.

Wyatt sighed as he walked up the stairs to the school building the next day. Today was going to be horrible. He walked to his home room after putting his backpack into his locker. He sat down and sighed when he was stared at by everyone, like what had happened yesterday.

He scowled around the classroom, a few kids looked down, other kids scowled right back. A racoon came into the room and he smiled at her and she smiled back and sat in the seat next to him. "Where's Troy?" she asked curiously.

"He's in the hospital." Wyatt said with a sigh, "Don't know why, the doctors haven't figured out what's wrong with him."

"That doesn't sound good," she said.

"I don't think it is, Heather, even though I keep getting told he'll be fine." Wyatt said in frustration.

Heather put one of her paws on Wyatt's shoulder, "It will be alright."

Wyatt sighed, "I hope so."

Wyatt struggled through the day to lunch where he and Heather sat down at an empty table. Wyatt saw a familiar brown wolf as he walked in, alone, and looked around hesitantly to find somewhere to sit.

Wyatt gestured for him to come and sit down and he did so hesitantly, blushing intensely as he sat down next to Wyatt. "Hi," he muttered shyly.

"Hi," Heather said, looking at Wyatt curiously, "I'm Heather."

"Dylan," Dylan said, taking the offered paw.

"So, Dylan, did you guys just move here?" Wyatt asked curiously, "I didn't see you last year."

"Yeah," Dylan said, "Jack and I moved here after my parents got into a car accident."

"Oh," Wyatt said, "didn't know that."

Dylan nodded as Heather said, "I'm going to go get my lunch."

When they were alone Dylan grew silent but he spoke up and said, "Hey Wyatt, I have to a question to ask you."

"What?" Wyatt asked curiously.

"A-are you gay?" he asked, blushing at the personal question.

"Yeah," Wyatt said slowly, "why?"

Dylan scooted closer to Wyatt and said, "Because I think you're kind of cute."

Wyatt scooted away quickly and Dylan looked hurt. "I think you're cute too," Wyatt said, "but I already have a boyfriend. Sorry."

"Oh," Dylan said, "well, I guess you don't need to apologize for that."

"If I wasn't already with someone," Wyatt said sadly, "I would probably say yes to a date, but I'm already with my boyfriend Troy."

Heather sat back down and looked between the two awkward looking boys and she said, "What's up? You guys look like you just admitted your deepest secrets to the two of you."

Wyatt shook his head, "Nah, nothing that severe."

Heather waited for a moment before saying, "Alright, whatever."

They ate lunch in silence from that point on.

**

Wyatt eagerly walked through the hallways of the hospital, wanting to see Troy soon. A nurse came out and smiled and said, "I'm sorry, but he just fell asleep."

Wyatt's heart sunk and Gideon put a paw on his shoulder and said, "I'll bring you back tomorrow before school, ok?"

"Yeah," Wyatt said glumly.

They turned around and walked out of the hospital, climbing into Clarice's car. Gideon started the car and said, "Boy, Clarice needs to get out here or I'm going to leave without her."

Clarice quickly came out of the hospital and climbed into the passenger seat. "Alright, Gideon. Let's finish your driving hours. Don't traumatize Wyatt."

Gideon grinned and backed out carefully, before putting the car into drive and driving out of the parking lot. He hit the curb on the turn out. "You're paying for any damages done to my car." Clarice grumbled.

Gideon grinned and said, "So what? Mom and dad will take a few of my allowances, oh well."

Gideon carefully drove to the house, parking in the driveway carefully. "Well," Clarice said, "you did well except for the curb."

Gideon grinned and said, "Wyatt, you alright?"

"Yeah, I'm fine." Wyatt said.

"I hope so." Gideon said, patting his shoulder, "I hope so."

**

Wyatt walked into the hospital a week later. He wanted to run to Troy's room, but Carol and Gideon held his paws tightly to prevent that like they had every other day that week. "I'm not a child." Wyatt said with a scowl.

"We know," Gideon said, removing his paw. Carol removed hers and Wyatt tried to run but Gideon grabbed his shoulder, "But you're going to do that."

Wyatt sighed and walked at their pace. To him it took way to long. They made it to Troy's room and walked in to see the doctor talking to Troy. When he looked up there was a touch of sadness in his eyes but it disappeared in an instant. "Mrs. Restin, may I talk to you, privately."

"Sure," Carol said.

They walked out and Gideon followed. "I wanted to talk to her privately," the doctor said, obviously irritated.

Gideon set his feet and said, "What she hears, I hear."

The doctor shook his head and turned to Carol, "We have found something in his bloodstream. We don't know what it is but it has a similar cellular structure as an STD. We're afraid it is. We want to have Wyatt tested."

There was more. "What else?" Gideon asked sadly, knowing what it was.

"Troy has got less than a week to live." the doctor said sadly, "and it will be a slow, painful death, unless..."

"Unless what?" Gideon said. Carol couldn't speak, she was crying to hard.

"We have a drug," the doctor said hesitantly, "that can kill him easily, quick and painless. But it's quite expensive."

Carol choked back some tears and said, "I don't care. He's a son to me. It's up to him."

The doctor nodded, "I will wait for you to get done talking to him."

Carol and Gideon walked back into the room and Gideon sat down on the bed next to Wyatt and put his arm around him and Troy and Troy spoke up, "I'm going to die aren't I?"

"Yes," Gideon said. Wyatt almost howled. "Within a week. It will be slow and painful, but..."

"But what?" Troy asked.

"They have a drug, that will make it short, and painless." Gideon said, trying not to cry himself. "It's up to you."

Wyatt stopped crying long enough to say, "D-do i-it T-troy. I don't w-want to s-see you in p-pain."

Troy started to cry silently and nodded, "Please." he said.

Carol informed the doctor and he came back a few minutes later, a needle ready. Wyatt grasped Troy's paw tightly and the doctor started to cry silently himself. Now Gideon let his burning hot tears flow down his cheeks. "Will it hurt any?" Troy asked.

"Just a small pinch," the doctor said, "and then a few minutes and it'll... it'll be over. Just like falling asleep."

Troy started to cry and held out his arm. The doctor placed the needle against his vein. The doctor pushed it in carefully and injected the liquid. Troy cried as he hugged Wyatt for the last time. He kissed him deeply and said, "Wyatt, I love you. Live your life, live it happily. Don't waste it mourning for me."

Troy yawned deeply, "I want you to mourn me, but don't let it rule your life."

Wyatt cried, "I love you too, so much."

"Bye," Troy said, "I love you."

And with that, Troy's eyes closed for a moment, before opening and remaining open, his body going limp. Wyatt buried his chest in Troy's temporarily warm chest and Gideon had to pick him up, carefully removing each of his limbs away from Troy's body.

The doctor was crying openly as well, "I hate it when I have to break the bad news to families." the doctor told them, "or boyfriends and their parents. It always makes me cry."

Carol put a paw on his shoulder. She couldn't talk because of her crying so hard but she nodded at him and he nodded back. Gideon was holding Wyatt tightly to his chest as Wyatt cried into his shoulder. Gideon switched positions so it would be easier to walk.

"Mrs. Restin," the doctor said, "I'd like to take a sample of blood from Wyatt so we can test to see if he has it."

Carol nodded and Gideon walked out of the room, following a doctor to another room where he set Wyatt down, keeping his arm around him. Wyatt held out his arm obediently for the doctor and barely felt it when the need broke the skin and started to suck blood from his arm. The doctor took at least three samples before putting a small bandage over the hole in Wyatt's arm.

"There," the doctor said, still crying, "I'm done."

Gideon picked Wyatt back up and, on his way out, hugged the doctor with one arm. "You've helped us more than you believe," Gideon said truthfully, "by telling us about that drug. If we had to watch Troy die... it would have killed Wyatt."

The doctor nodded, "I know."

Gideon held Wyatt closely as he walked, getting a few stares from nurses and other doctors as Wyatt practically howled into Gideon's shoulder. Gideon gave them all scowls, the menace ruined slightly by the tears flowing openly down his cheeks.

Carol walked behind them and when they were all in the car, Gideon holding Wyatt in the back seat. She started it, her hand shaking. "Mom," Gideon said, "are you going to be able to drive safely?"

"I can drive just fine." she said.

Gideon nodded and said, "Alright."

Carol managed to drive them home, only getting into a few near accidents, and when they did they walked slowly inside the house. Wyatt had cried himself to sleep on the car ride home and when Clarice came into the room she frowned and said, "What happened?"

"Troy's dead." Gideon said quietly.

"W-what?" Clarice said, looking at Wyatt sadly.

"Troy's dead," Gideon repeated. He handed Wyatt to her carefully and said, "Where's Raymond."

"Upstairs," she said, "playing with Zandra and Zakai."

Gideon walked hesitantly up the stairs and into the nursery where Raymond was dangling a ball on a string, like he would a feral cat, and the two babies were batting at them with their paws and giggled whenever they managed to pull the strings from his paws.

He looked up when Gideon entered and smiled but the smile was quickly replaced with a frown. He picked the babies up carefully and put them down in their cribs. He kissed their foreheads quickly and then walked out, Gideon close behind him. They closed the door and Raymond said, "What's the matter?"

"First," Gideon said, holding his arms out. Raymond walked into the hug and put his arms around the dragon. "The matter," Gideon said quietly, "is that Troy died, hun."

"What?" Raymond said, tears in his eyes, "How?"

"He got a..." Gideon started, "the doctor thinks it was a disease, a STD."

"Oh no," Raymond said, "that means Wyatt might..."

"I know, hun," Gideon whispered, "all we can do is hope."

They walked downstairs and joined the mourning people in the living room. Raymond and Gideon sat down, Raymond leaning against Gideon, crying as he watched Wyatt sleeping. About an hour later they heard the back door opening and Ron smiled as he walked in, "I'm home," he said.

He caught the mood and stopped smiling, "What happened?" His voice caused Wyatt to stir and he sat up and rubbed his eyes. "Where's Troy?" Ron asked.

Wyatt started to cry loudly again and Gideon spoke up, "Dad... Troy's dead."

"What?" Ron said, "How? When?"

"Today," Gideon said, "he had, the doctor thinks, a STD."

"Oh," Ron said quietly. He walked over to where Wyatt was crying into Clarice's shoulder and picked the small fox up. Wyatt switched his head to Ron's shoulder and Ron sat down with him in his lap and rubbed his back.

He started to whisper into Wyatt's ear so quietly that Gideon, with his very good hearing, could barely hear. "I know I haven't been a very good father to you," he said, "but... but I want you to know that I love you like a son, as much as I love Gideon, or Clarice."

Gideon felt a pang of sympathy as he realized that compared to him and Clarice, Wyatt had been left out. For twenty minutes the room was silent except for Wyatt's crying and Ron's occasional attempts at comforting him.

When Ron stood up, after Wyatt had cried himself to sleep yet again, Gideon separated himself from Raymond and gestured for him to stay. Gideon followed Ron upstairs and waited as Ron covered Wyatt up and tucked him in.

When Ron came out of the room and had closed the door Gideon hugged his father. Ron was shocked by the hug but accepted it and put his arms around Gideon, patting Gideon's back a few times. "That probably took a lot to admit that," Gideon whispered to his slightly taller father.

"Do what?" Ron asked curiously, confusing thick in his voice.

"To admit that you haven't been a very good father to Wyatt." Gideon said.

"Oh," Ron said, "you heard that."

"Yeah," Gideon said, "and it probably took a lot to admit that."

"It did," Ron said quietly, "but it was true."

Gideon patted his back and said, "I love you dad."

"I love you too, son." Ron said, "Never forget that."

"I won't," Gideon said.

Gideon walked downstairs and hugged Raymond and pulled him downstairs quickly. "I love you Raymond," Gideon whispered into his ear as they laid down.

"I love you too," he said, rubbing his paw down Gideon's cheek, sneaking a finger under one of the scales and tickling the skin of a ticklish spot that he knew. Gideon started to laugh and had to restrain himself from thrashing.

"Stop!" Gideon gasped, "Stop!"

Raymond laughed as he stopped and Gideon glared as he fixed the scale so that he couldn't get back at it. "How did you know about that?"

"I was tickling Zakai there and I figured his daddy might have the same ticklish spot." Raymond said with a grin.

Gideon laughed and nuzzled his boyfriend, "I love you," he whispered.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah." Raymond said with a grin.

Wyatt walked up the stairs to his school, sniffing and wiping his nose on the back of his paw. Gideon had made it clear to the students that morning by saying loudly that if anything happened to Gideon he would personally find out who it was.

He walked into home room and sat for a few minutes before female racoon with light brown fur and black fur that looked like it had a few smoky, gray spots in there. She sat down in the desk next to Wyatt's and said, "Hey Wyatt, Troy still in the hospital?"

Wyatt choked back tears and said, "No Heather, Troy isn't in the hospital. H-he's de..."

"He's what?" Heather asked curiously.

"He's dead." Wyatt whispered.

"Oh god," Heather said, putting a paw on Wyatt's shoulder and said, "Are you going to be alright?"

"I don't know." Wyatt said.

Heather rubbed a paw up and down his arm idly until the teacher walked in. Wyatt struggled through the day until lunch where he and Heather sat down at a table. Heather got up to get her lunch and Dylan sat down. "Hey cutie," Dylan said with a wink in his normal greeting.

"Shut up," Wyatt snapped instantly, realizing that he didn't want to talk to Dylan. All he did was flirt.

"Wha...?" Dylan asked.

"I don't want to talk to you right now," Wyatt snapped at him.

"What did I do?" Dylan asked, the hurt plain in his voice.

"Flirting with me," Wyatt said as he stood up, "that's what."

He left a very hurt Dylan behind as he left the cafeteria.
