This is a 10-chapter story that's a collaboration between me and otherside_dragons!

In this world, the dystopian Oculus rules over all. In it, a dragon, Faul, is captured and sent to a laboratory to be experimented on. But a scientist there named David decides to take matters into his own hands.

This series will be marked as adult for future installments. Expect illustrations soon!

My name is Faul, and this is my story.

Before the changes happened, I was just a normal dragon trying to make his way in the world. I lived in the mountains of the Oculean Republic; the outskirts where I lived was free of the productions of the morphic species. I lived my life in peace with the others of my kind.

I was told before that my species was quite rare in the world; I was told that this mountain range was the last place in which my kin lived. In retrospect, this should have made me more careful; I was a prime target for research. And one day, they did come for me. And I was unprepared.

This all started one day, when the sun was shining and I was basking in the warm summer breeze. I had just eaten, and was idly digesting on the rocks outside my home. It was a good day... Until I fell asleep.

They were waiting for me. They lied in secret until I dozed off. And then they woke me up by throwing nets over my body. It all happened so suddenly, I couldn't fight back. There were three anthros, all struggling to keep me in their net. I fought, but in the end, the material they used was too great for me to overcome.

I grew weak, and then one of them got out a needle of some substance. I was injected with it before I could react, and my world went dark.

When I woke up, I was greeted with many unfamiliar sights. I was greeted with smooth, grey walls instead of my cavern home. There was a door with no handle and a trough for food and water in the corner. There was a large black rectangle on the wall- I would learn that to be a one-way window.

I was trapped and put into a cell. As I would find out, it was a testing cell. I paced around this room, but found no means of escape. Whoever this was, they had me in their clutches. The room was small; I could walk in a circle around it rather quickly. I was confused and scared. Was this where my life was to end? In this small room?

My life did not end. But something else happened. After a long period of waiting, the door opened. Anthros in lab coats stormed the room- 4 of them in all. Before I could react, I was held down, and one of them injected something in me.

I spoke the common tongue. "What are you doing to me?"

They did not reply. They only stuck their needles in me and left. I tried swiping at them, angry at my internment, but I was too slow. Before I could get out, the door closed.

WIth nothing left to do, I looked back at where they injected the needle. It was then I noticed the tubes.

They manifested as tubular bumps in my leathery cobalt hide. They started about halfway up my flanks, and ran behind my vision in the front. Now that I noticed them, they felt hard but flexible as I moved my neck around. This scared me more than anything else. What had they already done to me?

I must have paced around my cell for an hour. I couldn't just lay down. What was my fate? What were they doing to me?

Soon, my questions would be answered. But for now, I stopped dead in my tracks when I heard the door open once more.

* * *

My name is David, and this is my story.

I was the head of genetics testing for the Oculean branch of Enduring Enterprises. EE spread its tendrils to many lands... And the land of the Oculus was one of them.

It was a living. I worked a lot, and they let me survive. EE produced things for the Oculus, and the Oculus let EE exist. It was all a very stable relationship. Of course, that leaves out one very important fact- It was miserable.

I just wanted to create neat things, but everything I had done at this job was weapons development. I was the person who created things the Oculus used to conquer other lands, to guard its property, and to silence protests. I felt every time I released a new creation that I was making the world worse.

Which was why I decided that, on this day, I would stop giving in.

I had a plan in mind. I would go into the cell, befriend my creation, and get him out of the building. I knew the other employee's shifts; I knew the halls to walk. I was going to save this dragon.

I'm also a dragon. I guess it's important to say that I walk on two legs, though. While my scales were grey as opposed to my subject's blue, I felt that the two of us were kin. Both wanting to escape. And whether this dragon knew he was going to escape today, that was what was going to happen.

I opened the door to the testing cell and walked in.

The dragon wasn't facing me, but was craning his neck in my direction. I stopped for a second. He was judging me, I could tell. I had to speak quickly.

And speak I did. "Hello. I'm Dave. Please don't be afraid."

I didn't know if that was fear or anger on his face. But I do know his response: "Why are you keeping me here?"

I step closer to the beast. He doesn't make a move. "I want to help you."

"Then why are you keeping me here?"

"I am not keeping you here. Enduring Enterprises is." I take another cautious step. At this point, he could have lit into me- But he only turned around to face me.

"Oh. I'm sorry. You... Want to help me?" The dragon relaxed; I could tell he only wanted to be nice. I felt a pang of sorrow at what I had done. But I was going to fix it now.

"Yes, I do. What is your name?" I say, trying to be reassuring as I step closer.

"... Faul." he says, looking at me intently as I move closer.

"Nice to meet you. Well, meet you face-to-face, that is."

"What do you mean?"

"I... Uhh... Nevermind about that. Let's just say... I'm sorry for what happened."

Faul pauses. "Well... Allow me to forgive you."

I smile. "Thanks." I was thankful that this dragon was so forgiving.

"How... Do you wish to help me?"

At this point, I was standing next to Faul. I spoke quickly. "I'm going to get you out of this place."

"You can do that?"

"Easily. You see... I know exactly how to do it."

I reach out cautiously and put my hand on Faul's shoulder. When my hand came in contact with the rough skin, Faul didn't flinch. I breathed out. He trusted me, I knew now.

I continued. "All I need to do is say you're with me, and they'll let me through."

Faul padded to the door. I followed. "Well... When can I leave this place?" He said.

"Now."

My hopes had been elevated to new heights by this Dave person. He wanted to save me? And here I was, thinking I would die here!

I could tell he was a kind soul, I believed. He had a gentle touch and a genuine smile. I knew somehow that I could trust him... But a piece of me told me not to trust these anthros. However, Dave was my only way out of this. I had to trust him.

Even if he was lying, one thing was true: I wanted out of this cold, dark place. I stood in front of the door and waited. Dave came over to the door and it opened. He stood to the side and waved his hand in the door's direction.

"After you."

I took the first steps out of the door; Dave following behind me. Beyond my cell was a hallway, stretching out a long ways. I could see so many other doors, so many other windows. How many others like me were imprisoned here? I moved forward; Dave began to take the front, putting his clawed hand on my side as he guided me in a direction.

I looked around in somber wonder. "How many of my kind are here?"

Dave sighed. "I don't know... We have many stored here."

We started to walk. It was a long walk to the end of the hall. "Will they be freed too?"

"I... Don't know if I can. I'm hoping they don't find out about you, first of all." Dave smiled momentarily.

"These halls seem so empty. Where are the ones who experimented on me?"

"It's after hours. I'm one of the few here."

"One of the few...?"

We take a bend in the hall, and get to the end of another. We moved into a large room; at one end was a door and a desk behind glass. A wolf manned this desk, and guarded this door. It was the main exit.

"Oh, hey Dave... Working late tonight?" the wolf said, recognizing Dave.

"Yeah. I'm just about to clock out. Just got a subject here to deliver."

The wolf looked at me. "This thing here?" His eyes narrowed. "You're not caging him before shipping him out?"

"Nah, he's trained. Say hello to Vince, Subject 52."

Was I subject 52? Anyways, I realized Dave's plan and decided to play my part. "Hello, Vince." I said, trying to mask the fear in my voice.

"Hah, you really train them well, man." Vince said, leaning back in his chair. "So I assume no lab tech's here to deliver it for you?"

"Nope. It's late, bud." Dave chuckled. I just stood there, looking at the man preventing our freedom.

"Well then, looks like you're good to go. Have fun." Vince pressed a button at his desk, and the large door creaked open, pulling up from the top. It led to a much larger corridor. And this corridor led to a set of doors... And freedom.

I could see the streetlights shining through the large windows on the doors. This was it. We had escaped. I immediately walked forwards, yearning for freedom. Dave had to speed up to stay in front of me. And before I left that room, I turned to the man behind glass and said "Thank you."

Vince looked at me oddly. He looked at me like this wasn't what he expected. But he replied with a "No problem, man" and looked away.

And that was it. I walked, almost ran, to the doors. When Dave let me through the doors (a very anthro invention!) I could finally see the sky once more. I was free.

Dave spoke. "I need to keep you safe. And I know where I can do this. Follow me."

And I followed.
